From a conversation elsewhere...

If you have a cell phone, you have a remotely activatable microphone with a GPS locator on your person. It doesn’t have to be a smartphone, either. If you haven’t been conducting yourself accordingly since about the time Clancy released Clear and Present Danger, I don’t know what to say. Also, if I were an information-hungry oppressive government, I totally wouldn't pay special attention to the person who refused to own a smart phone or a credit card or "smart speaker" and did all their transacti...

Vibrate Outward

Just because it was folded and sitting across the page and a labored beginning. I just put this here tonight because it happened and it's in the journal and that is what I am doing. Putting it here. It is not necessarily a plan. But I always consider anything that happens.  Tomorrow, (finally I think I am working into my evening schedule...) I will talk a bit about the different general approaches I use to build a big cloth. Technically speaking. (that's )

Judge refuses to block L.A. officials from shutting down gun stores during coronavirus pandemic

A federal judge on Monday refused to block Los Angeles officials from shutting down gun stores as nonessential businesses during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s at least the second time federal judges in California have declined to intervene in shutdown orders even as similar orders are being challenged nationwide. “The closure of non-essential businesses, including firearms and ammunition retailers, reasonably fits the City’s and County’s stated objectives of reducing the spread of this disease,...

Rapid page flipping skips first pages of chapters

On my Kobo Clara HD, I have confirmed this problem with both purchased and imported .kepub.epub books: Doing a continuous press on the lower right corner of the screen is supposed to rapidly page through a book, right? Repeatedly, though, I see the paging skip the first (and sometimes the second) pages of new chapters. It's as if the time it takes to load the next chapter from the archive that is the ePub file is not accounted for. The easiest way to see this bug is simply to do the long press...

Can I sideload an AZW3 file to Kindle on Android or to the Kindle library?

Of course I know I can do it with a .mobi file quite easily, but I recently found out that by using AZW3 I can read using Word Runner. Apparently it's not possible to send AZW3 to a Kindle email address. On my Kindle Fire, I can open it directly with Docs, but it doesn't then sync with the Kindle library. I tried accessing my Amazon Drive on the Android app, but the file doesn't open in the Kindle app. I also tried manually putting the .azw3 file into some of the Kindle folders on my Android pho...

Screenshots appearing in My Books screen

I have a Clara HD, and I periodically find that what appears to be a screenshot shows up in the list of books when I go to the My Books screen - see below. I recall that with a Aura HD that I used to have, it was possible to take screenshots, but when I did so, they didn't show up in My Books. I haven't tried to take any screenshots with the Clara HD - don't even know if that capability still exists - so I don't know where these are coming from. Can anyone tell me what causes them and how to pr...

Fritz Hansen Celebrates Vico Magistretti’s Vico Duo Chair

Designer Vico Magistretti was born in 1920. One hundred years later, manufacturer Fritz Hansen acknowledges his illustrious career by re-issuing the dazzling stackable Vico Duo Chair. First released in 1997, Vico Duo zipped into our consciousness via its unorthodox silhouette, the expressionistic Z-shape of the backward armrests—which boldly dive into the back legs in a single-piece—defining its captivating aesthetic. Vico Duo has always exemplified the strength of a dynamic du...

Calibre rescans entire SD card each time device is connected

I have a Boyue Likebook Mars with an external SD card on which I store the books that I load from Calibre. I've noticed this odd behavior from Calibre where it rescans the whole file system on the card each time I connect the device, taking anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes. Calibre is on version 4.13 running on Ubuntu Linux, I've fiddled with the different options for metadata management and configured the device and SD card to scan only specific folders, but each connection still involves a ful...

Six jazz movies you may not know

The film industry started making jazz-related features as soon as synchronized sound came in, in 1927: “I’m gonna sing it jazzy,” Al Jolson’s Jack Robin optimistically declares in the pioneering talkie The Jazz Singer, before taking off on Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies.” (He gets closer to the jazzy mark whistling a quasi-improvised chorus of “Toot Toot Tootsie.”) Since then there have been dozens of movies focusing on jazz, or at least working it into the main plot.Such jazz stories have never be...

This Day in History: Joseph Manton, Pioneering British Gunsmith, is Born

Manton arm with his tube lock (RIAC) England -(AmmoLand.com)-  On April 6, 1766, Joseph Manton was born in Grantham, England. At the age of 15, Joseph was apprenticed to his older brother John, who was a gunsmith in London. By the time he was 23, Joseph had opened up a gun shop of his own. His brother John made quality guns, to be sure, but he would soon be eclipsed by his younger brother. It wasn’t long before his talents were noticed by the government in the 1790s. Soon, Joseph obtained a R...
