It's not all bad.

I usually refer to NextDoor as "Karens.com" because it seems to be a website designed for people who like to complain about stuff, or who need to generate drama in their otherwise boring lives by imagining every car that drives by is criminals who've come to take the white women. It's not all bad though. This poster subverted the trope rather nicely... South of 46th Street is deep inna heart of Midtown. There's not a ton of large green space nearby, so I'm assuming they infiltrated down the Mono...

Coronavirus: Judge upholds L.A. city order to close gun stores

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles Superior Court judge Tuesday upheld the city’s decision to deem gun stores non-essential businesses and force them to close during the coronavirus pandemic. Several businesses and a gun-rights group sued the city April 3 and requested a temporary restraining order allowing shops to reopen. City Attorney Mike Feuer said the request was rejected by Superior Court Judge Mary Strobel. “I’m very pleased that once again our office has successfully defended the mayor’s Safer...

The 13th Paladin

I ran into this YA series earlier in the week. One of those, oh that looks interesting and a largish number of reviews, mostly 4 or 5 stars. It wasn't expensive so why not? It's really quite good. It's written by a German writer named Torsten Weitze and the translator did a very good job. Basically, it's a standard coming of age/quest story. The first two books are out with the 3rd coming out in May. Is it LOTR or Harry Potter? No, but it's easy to read and is fairly subtle with a few ...

The wonderful history of Troll Dolls

To mark last week's release of the new Trolls World Tour movie, Smithsonian's Michelle Delgado tells the origin story of Troll Dolls, from their birth following World War II their modern day big screen revival. The tale begins in Gjøl, Denmark, home to baker Thomas Dam (1915-1989) who could no longer work when the local flour factory went out of business. From Smithsonian: Dam would sit near the fireplace, carving bits of wood while he thought. He often carved funny creatures to enterta...

NanaWall’s SL84 Folding Glass Wall System

If you’re in the market for a multi-panel accordion-style door system to enhance the relationship between inside and out, look no further than NanaWall’s SL84. Just released at IBS 2020, SL84 innovates many aspects of folding-door systems, including functionality, profile width, and thermal performance. The system is a breeze to use. Hacks 2 Kindles for PDF

Disappointed by the Boox Max 3. Can't get used to it. Too gray for my taste. Missing the Kindle's lighted screen (have Voyage). On the other hand, the Voyage is great for reading but not so for PDFs. Crazy idea, but is there a way to hack two Kindles so a PDF is split between them (the left part of the page is displayed on the left Kindle, the right one on the right Kindle ? Or possibly even four kindles, in two rows? Avi

Bird Baby 2

I decided I needed a creative break from scrub caps and face masks and went back to my partially finished projects from 2 weeks ago. I am happy to be able to do something that can help in the crisis we are in right now, and also happy to spend some time doing the work I love. I love this little pouty face. I have donated 64 scrub caps so far to nurses in the Boston area. My current goal is to make it to 100. I’ve made masks for family and friends. I a...

which english dictionary is the *fastest* in your experience (paperwhite 4)

I realize the Kindle is not a speed demon but often when I try to look up a word it takes so long that I lose interest in learning what it means and just infer from context. This along with sometimes herky/jerky highlighting (especially when trying to make multi page highlights) are my two biggest issues with koreader (though I can't help but love it versus the kindle native reading app :P). Anyway, wondering if you found a dictionary that you found ultra rapid? I've tried wordnet, gnu, and 3...

anyway to ascertain *actual* page numbers in a book from koreader?

Hey team: Is there any way to detect the actual number of pages in a given ebook before/during reading it? I am aware that koreader tells me how many pages I have left based on my font/margin size which is certainly useful. I'm just curious how it stacks up against the actual number of pages that the book had when it was published. I guess I could always google it but was hoping for a method within the app. I noticed "Book Information" lists the number of pages based on font size/margin b...

Plugin for readers dictionary - create flash card to anki

Hey there Just a short question. I'd like to build a plugin for the reader. The basic idea is as follows: - Every time I look up a word through the dictionary in Calibre I want to automatically create a flashcard in "Anki" for a given set. - Once that would work it could be made better, i.e. through selecting the set it Anki by looking up the books tags, etc... Would it - technically - be possible to add a plugin for the reader and catch the event? I'm pretty new to programming and Calibr...

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Across the nation, COVID-19 is exposing all manner of tyrants, with mayors, governors, and judges believing their powers are without limitations. Opinion by Alan Chwick Minute Man Statue Concord Massachusetts Militia Colonial Bear Arms U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- “The Second Amendment is not about hunting deer or shooting at targets in the woods. Anybody who thinks that is nuts.” – Dave Workman, by telephone, March 2020 In the U.S., common reasons for firearms possession are hunting, sport, and collection, but self-defense truly remains the main motive underlying gun possession.
