At least we have Virtual Chelsea. And some stamps.

It’s legendary. It’s the largest in the world. And this year the Chelsea Flower Show is virtual, so possibly accessible to all of us! I say possibly because I’m still not entirely sure how it’ll work for us North Americans. The Royal Horticulture Society, which puts on the show, announced that from May 18-23, it’ll “share videos and articles from regular Chelsea exhibitors on its website.” Monday 18th May will be Members’ day, showcasing exclusive RHS Chelsea content for RHS members only. 19th-...

Glass Classism

People who get into picture taking with their first DSLR will often go on photography forums looking  for advice on which lens to buy next, after the one(s) that came in the box with their beginner camera. Most frequently, and especially in Canon-centric groups, the answer will be "Get the Nifty Fifty!"On its surface, this is solid advice! Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 is a lot of bang for the buck. Compact and lightweight, but sharp and with a fast maximum aperture, the "Nifty Fifty" would seem to be a ...

Brick & Mortar Chixculub

"U.S. retail sales and factory output registered the steepest declines on record in April, illustrating a recession so deep that it will likely take years to fully recover. Revenue at retailers and restaurants fell 16.4% from the prior month, almost double the 8.3% drop in March which was previously the worst in data back to 1992, according to a Commerce Department report released Friday. That compared with the median projection for a 12% decline. A separate report from the Federal Reserve showe...

Friday Night Lights: J. W. Ramp’s Downrange IR Signature Test

Have you ever wondered what IR illuminators look like to someone on the receiving end? Certain SOP is to forgo the use of an IR lights or lasers and to just shoot passively for fear of the target downrange being able to see the glow of an IR device even without night vision. And while […] Read More … The post Friday Night Lights: J. W. Ramp’s Downrange IR Signature Test appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

New Reader: Jumping to specific page?

I like the new 4.xx reader a lot. However, there's one feature from the old reader that I miss: jumping to a specific page number. You could do it in the old reader by typing it in the text box on the top left. However, I can't any option to do it in the new reader. Am I just missing it or is it absent? :thanks:

Location Saving Kindle for iPad

My Kindle App on my iPad no longer saves the location locally of books I am reading. If I am reading a book purchased from Amazon, it works. But If I am reading a book that was an EPUB and then I converted it to MOBI, using Calibre, it doesn't save the location. I can take the same MOBI file to a Kindle for Android and it works fine. This function used to work in the iPad until a few weeks ago. Any ideas? :help:

Lawsuit Filed Over DOJ’s Second Amendment FOIA Foot-dragging

AG Barr is certainly not shy about enforcing gun laws. So why does his DOJ appear so reluctant to enforce gun rights? (Department of Justice /Facebook) U.S.A. – -(Ammoland.com)- A lawsuit was filed Thursday by Stamboulieh Law, PLLC, in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia against the Department of Justice. The complaint, filed on behalf of this correspondent, was made necessary due to the DOJ’s failure to turn over records relating to a Freedom of Information Act (FOI...

The Parisone Pendant by Sonneman is Sublime

Parisone is an LED pendant that looks like a teardrop, burdened with gravity at the apex of its expansion, before tumbling down the cheek. Thankfully, this lovely light from Sonneman has been eternally suspended in its oblong shape. Even better, it’s been paired—or tripled—with equals of its ilk to form an enigmatic threesome of a luminaire. The assembly—dangling from a long cord in the fashion of an infant’s mobile—creates a poem in motion: “fluid glass from a funnel-like shap...

Did Shelter in Place Save Lives or Cost Them?

Did Shelter in Place Save Lives or Cost Them?, iStock-1213378005 U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Covid-19 might kill 100 thousand of us in the US, but maybe not. We still have hope that it will kill far fewer. What we do know is that putting 200 million people under a relaxed house-arrest costs lives too. We have to ask if shelter-in-place saved lives or cost them. Who gets to decide that more young addicts committing suicide was worth it in order to have fewer old people die in nursing homes? You ...

Before he was a rock star, ‘Hollywood Park’ author spent his youth in a cult and at the racetrack

Mikel Jollett and his father had their first bonding experiences at the old Hollywood Park horse racing track in Inglewood. It wasn’t exactly an ideal hangout for youngsters, but little about Jollett’s early life could be considered normal. His parents were members of Synanon, a California rehab center-turned-cult, where babies were considered “children of the universe” and placed in an orphanage. The gambling venue and Jollett’s unorthodox upbringing are at the heart of the musician-writer’s co...

Archon Type B Alien Racegun Review Part 1 (VIDEO)

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)-The Archon Type B pistol feels like it would be right at home on the set of a science fiction film. Its uniquely cut slide, odd geometric grip texture, and super-low bore axis all give it a very distinctive look. After multiple instances, I’ve decided to start keeping a record of how many times I hear “What the heck is that thing?” while shooting the Type B at public ranges. In all seriousness, there is plenty of hype and debate surrounding the Archon Type B and its ...

need to replace my Kobo Aura 1

I love the size, but it is so slow as to be unusable. I have to press really hard on the screen (usually more than once to get my finger positioned just so) and then wait for it to work - turning pages is a frustrating thing as I'm a really fast reader. I have an ipad mini which is about the same size, it is extremely responsive, but battery life is poor and I don't like the Apple ecosystem. I only care about reading on the device, thus it needs to have fast page turns and good ppi. Too bad ...

New Kobo Owner, first impressions coming from PW1

UPS **finally** delivered my Clara HD last night. After a few hours of reading here are my first impressions moving from a 7+ year old Kindle Paperwhite 1 that was ordered on announcement day. I like that it's slightly smaller and lighter than my Kindle, with the same screen size. It fits in my pockets much better. That said, I found it slightly harder to hold than the Kindle, it just didn't feel as well balanced in my (proportional to my 1.92m/6'4" frame) hand. The smaller bezel did mean t...
