Strange Days Indeed

My kobo won't sync no matter what

My kobo won't sync. When I try to sync over the wifi, it can spend 24 hours just on the updating section. When I try to sync over pc, it can spend 24 hours on starting sync. Nothing I do works. I'm really frustrated because I just bought some books and I'd like to read them. What do I do? I don't want to replace a kobo because of some minor glitch like this. Can anyone help me? It's a kobo clara HD, if that helps.

Trend Alert: Crazy Candles

Are candlemakers the new potters? Lately we’ve been seeing sculptural, handmade, decidedly odd, off-kilter candles proliferating. Here are some recent finds: Above: Above: Above: Above: The Femme Illuminee Candle, made in Vancouver by Rachel Saunders Ceramics, is $85 from Here the Store in Colorado. Above: Goober Candle by Brooklyn-based Talbot and Yoon; $24. Also available from Areaware.

How to reformat an epub so I can split it at each chapter?

Hi, I have an epub which I can't split at each chapter. Reading previous posts, I need to add formatting before I can split it. What formatting, and is there any easy way to do this without too much formatting?

Transformers Studio Series Devastator Pack Coming to Retail Soon?

Thanks to a tip-off on a new retail listing at NDA Toys for what appears to be a product Transformers Studio Series Devastator Set. Judging from the price of £403 GBP ($480 USD), and the box width of 76.2 cm (2.5 feet) shown in the listing - it seems plausible that a set of eight Transformers toys would fitt into one package of that size.

Fred Willard Voice of Transformers Animated Swindle Passes at 86

We are very sad to report that actor Fred Willard, who played the voice of Animated Swindle, has passed away of natural causes at the age of 86. Fred had an extensive career of more than 50 years where he acted in hundreds of film, television, and stage productions. He will be remembered for his many memorable roles in productions such as This Is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman, For Your Consideration, Fernwood Tonight, and of course Transformers Animated.

Possibly a silly question about catalogs

I am having a hard time figuring this out. I want to make a catalog of my books but I want them to appear by date instead of sorted by author on my kindle. This way when I look at a description of my books in the file it will have the most recent one's listed first. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. (by the way, it does need to be simple-I am not tech savy). Thank you ;)

POTD: M4s Reach Iraqi Special Forces

Soldiers with the Qwat al Khasah, the Special Forces of Iraq, were recently photographed unloading boxes of new M4 carbines at Camp Taji, March 25, 2020. The Qwat al Khasah, Iraqi Special Forces, are part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the fight against Daesh. Aura ONE Cannot change font for public library books

Hello, my public library finally enables us to borrow e-books (in .epub format), but I cannot change font type and font size, nor increase line space on those books. For my own books, I know how to make a copy and delete the .css file in Sigil if the font will not change, but with public library books I cannot do that due to DRM protection. The public library says this is the fault of Kobo, because it cannot override the built-in css file from public library books, as apparently (?) other e-rea...

When and How Did I Turn Right Wing?

Another Quora question.  Lots of post inspiration over there.  Here's my answer:I’m 58 years old. That means that in 1974 I was 12. I vividly remember Watergate, and Nixon’s resignation. I also remember Jimmy Carter’s “American Malaise” period. I think Jimmy Carter is a nice man who was a lousy President. I turned 18 in 1980. I cast my first vote for President for Ronald Reagan. I watched as he, Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II rapidly accelerated the downfall of the Soviet Union. It was...

Print Spines

Is there a way in Calibre (or a plugin) that would print a library of spine-like images (title, author, approximated thickness and height, varied colors, perhaps an icon like a publisher's imprint) only? Basically, something that looks like a bookshelf? (Yes, I'm thinking of making a background for videoconferencing showing my actual e-library).

Koji Alchemy: Rediscovering the Magic of Mold-Based Fermentation by Jeremy Umansky and Rich Shih

I founded Umami Chef, the UKs first manufacturer of koji, and so I have been eagerly awaiting this book for a long time. I wasn’t disappointed. Koji Alchemy contains a wealth of information, even for someone like me who has been using koji for years. But, that doesn’t mean this book isn’t for beginners. It carefully explains many ways in which koji can be used; so that even those with no previous knowledge can be inspired to try this special mold. Koji Alchemy begins by detail...

Tweedy Pug

This is the last one for now. She is dressed in Autumn colors with a tweedy top. I think she looks like she would be happy partnering up with Miss Marple. She has a cashmere skirt and wool plaid scarf to stave off any brisk breezes. Her tail is sticking straight up! I forgot to curl it before I took the photos. There is a pipe cleaner in the tail so it can hold a shape.

Primary Jostling

The last GOP Senate primary turned into an ugly three-way mudslinging contest, with each of the candidates and their supporting PACs spending gigabucks on TV ads trying to paint the others as anti-Trump haters of 'Murica. Now I'm subjected to TV ads for the GOP primary for Indiana's 5th Congressional District, which we got gerrymandered into a few election cycles back. (Thus depriving me of my one electoral joy: voting for whatever Don Quixote the GOP trotted out to run against hereditary Congres...

Update Advice for Calibre AppImage?

I have very limited space on my laptop running linux mint, so I try to keep as much on portable storage as possible. Thus, I'm using an appimage of Calibre 3.18 on an SD card. (The calibre library it connects to is also on that SD card.) Any suggestions for how best to update it to 4.16.0? I have no coding background, so I don't understand what would happen if I copied the binary install code shown on the downloads page when I have such a weird setup. Does it matter?

[Pocketbook][epub2][Metadata] Attributes order

Hello! I haven't find anything searching, so I'm writing this post. In short: sometimes Calibre adds the Series metadata to ePub2 files as Code:     instead of Code:     This makes the Series metadata of the affected books be unable to be read by Pocketbook devices. As I haven't yet managed to find the trigger, and since apparently this is a very old issue Pocketbook never bothered to deal with, there is a way to force Calibre to write the Nema attribute first a...

Welcome

Hi, I'm a Dutch retiree and use Calibre a long time to collect my ebook-collection. I am very pleased with this program and use it almost every day. My collection of Dutch ebook exceeds 45.000 books and I'm still going on adding new books almost every day. I will pose a suggestion that possibly has been made before, but I did not look throught all messages. What I like to see as an option is a database for authors, where you can put some more detailed information about them. The only thing I ...

Restaurantapocalypse?

"After running my restaurants for 17 years, including 10 years in New York City and Chicago, I've had a lot of time during these shuttered months to pore through industry and news reports, talk to colleagues and attend Zoom forums about the state of my industry. I have had a bird's-eye view of the crisis through the James Beard Foundation, where I am a trustee.Though we restaurateurs have faith in our creativity and resilience, the prognosis is dire. Some 1,400 of us responded to a recent survey...

It's a small world? Not so fast...

In a free-to-read piece, The Economist looks at the observable (and the projected) effects of COVID-19 on globalism:"The world has had several epochs of integration, but the trading system that emerged in the 1990s went further than ever before. China became the world’s factory and borders opened to people, goods, capital and information (see Chaguan). After Lehman Brothers collapsed in 2008 most banks and some multinational firms pulled back. Trade and foreign investment stagnated relative to g...
