A Peony Kind of Love…in the Gardens of Winterthur

Guest Rant by Debra Moffitt In this burdened, budding springtime, we are all looking for something to do. I suggest falling in love — rollicking, floating on a marshmallow cloud, I’m-not-even-hungry love. To be honest, my paramour and I have been carrying on since 2016 and this year we are as star-crossed as any two have ever been. Confession: I’m married. But the real problem is my heart’s desire lives behind the gates of an Eden-like public garden called Winterthur. The place draws a crowd, ...

Exile and the Nation: Afshin Marashi

The Parsi Community of India and the Making of Modern Iran By Afshin Marashi Connecting oft-disparate fields, this book explores the Zoroastrian diaspora living in India and its role in using antiquity to bolster twentieth-century Iranian nationalism. In the aftermath of the seventh-century Islamic conquest of Iran, Zoroastrians departed for India. Known as the Parsis, they slowly lost contact with their ancestral land until the nineteenth century, when steam-powered sea travel, the increas...

Char Su Fried Rice

You have to marinade the meat. It's best left as long as possible but best overnight. You can add a couple of tsp of red food colour to the marinade if you want the red outer colour. [Author: Super Madcow]

Character of the week: Muhammad Ali

” I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was. At home I am a nice guy: but I don’t want the world to know. Humble people, I’ve found, don’t get very far. The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and […]

Likebook Ares - Wallpaper Problem?

Hello! Brand-new Ares owner, and generally speaking, I'm loving it, though I'm encountering one particular problem that's vexing me. Has anyone else here encountered this, and if so, is there a known solution or workaround? * Desired result: I'm looking to run a third-party launcher (Nova Launcher preferred, but willing to consider others with similar functionality and customizability) with a white background. * What I've done: Updated to latest available firmware online (2.3.3-2020041717), ac...

SCCY CPX-2 Handgun Tabletop & Range Review – Video

Graham Baates' 3-shot group with the SCCY CPX-2 handgun and affordable Blazer aluminum-cased ammunition. (SCCY advises against using steel or aluminum-cased ammunition). USA – -(Ammoland.com)-  “You get what you pay for,” and “What's your life worth?” are quotes I often hear used to pressure budget shoppers into spending a little more or pressure someone out of buying a budget firearm.  While the quotes have some merit to them not everyone is ready to drop $600 on a pistol (that may or may no...

Fixing My Collections

Now that I finally understand (after years) how Kindle Collections works and only have two other family members linked to my account, I want to fix my Collections. When I look at Collections, there are multiples of categories (i.e. Scifi, Scifi and Fantasy, Fantasy and Sci fi) mostly because these were set up on kindles instead of online. How can I sort this out so that I only have two categories (Science Fiction, Fantasy)? The easy way I thought would be to delete all the categories and st...

Very Classy Seating by Luca Nichetto for Et al.

Luca Nichetto’s Classy Seating collection for Et al. is sublimely sinuous with a slim silhouette and a superlative sheen. Indeed, the chair, armchair, and stool that comprise the collection provoke poetic flights of fancy beyond mere alliteration. Classy reflects the contemporary connotation of the word: both elegant and durable, the collection revels in the juxtaposition of different surfaces: “matte below and shiny above, on the ample seat and vice-versa on the enveloping bac...

Daily Prime - Transformers 15th Anniversary Colorful Convoy

The year 2000 was a shining time, not only did we survive the near-meltdown of civilization from the year 2000 bug. Takara got so overly sentimental for the 15th Anniversary of the debut of "Fight! Question about LEDs on Touch Lux 3

I'm the fortunate owner of a PB615 (Russian model without WiFi) and was surprised to note that it has 8 LEDs at the top. I liked the PB615 so much, that I decided I wanted to find a PocketBook that would support WiFi and Touch Screen (so I could download books directly to it). I found a Touch Lux 3 at a good price on eBay last night and, while waiting for it to arrive, I was wondering if its lighting was the same as the PB615. It apparently is not. As far as I tell by scouring the videos and rev...

Sending borrowed books to a Kobo

Hi, I am trying to get books borrowed through Borrowbox onto my Kobo. Borrowbox downloads a .acsm file as the books expire after three weeks. I understand that if I open a .acsm file in Adobe Digital Editions then I can add the resulting epub to calibre and send it to my already authorised reader where I can then read it. However, when I tried this with a book borrowed from Borrowbox it told me that the loan had expired. I can open the book in Calibre and the Kobo still reports that it is aut...
