Joe Lamp’l Rants about Mosquito Spraying Services, and 9 More Things

Guest Rant by Joe Lamp’l I’ve raved about his podcast before but the recent episode “Gardening Pet Peeves – My Top 10″ was particularly on-topic for us. So I asked Joe if we could publish his comments about something not mentioned here since 2007 – the pervasive greenwashing by mosquito spraying companies. Here’s what Joe wrote about them in his shownotes. Susan Mosquito spraying services are becoming more common, and I cringe just thinking about it. What’s worse is that many of them are now tou...

Literary Owls Do Cry by Janet Frame

'Set in provincial, pre-1940s New Zealand, Owls Do Cry explores the Withers family, in particular Daphne Withers. When one of Daphne's sisters dies, a crisis is provoked that leads Daphne to a mental asylum where she receives shock treatment. Her voice from "the Dead Room" haunts the novel with its poetic insights.' There are two phases of discussion. The first begins immediately and may contain conversations about anything pre-completion of the selection including reading progress, section tho...

There is an unwritten rule saying that “the world is for the strong”, that “only the fittest survive.” If it were like that, human beings would never have existed, because they are part of a species that needs to be protected for a long period of time (specialists say that we are only capable […]

Speer Gold Dot 22 Magnum Ammunition Test & Review

U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- When the 22 WMR, or 22 Magnum, debuted in 1959, it was intended as a more powerful, longer-range alternative to the ubiquitous 22 Long Rifle cartridge. As such, it was meant to be a rifle cartridge, but like its predecessor, the cartridge was offered in a pistol configuration almost immediately. The 22 Magnum cartridge boasts more velocity over the 22 LR, even in light-weight shorter-barreled handguns, and the debate over the 22 Magnum's viability as a low-recoiling s...

Daily Prime - Goodbye Hero Mashers Optimus Prime!

Remember that time Hasbro made non-transforming, super-articulated, part-swapping robots not in disguise? The Hero Mashers were one of those things you always wanted until you got it. After winning over Marvel and Star Wars fans, Hasbro rolled out a Transformers Hero Mashers "That's What It's All About" themed promo (see video below) to a weak response at retail that was discontinued by 2016 canceling waves and distribution to some countries.

After the download I could see the metadata in the "Book Details" in the main interface. But when I saved the epub back on to my hard drive and opened the book, the metadata did not show in the book. How do I save the downloaded metadata in the epub? Thank you mamaijee

Stephen King Has Idea For ‘Friday the 13th’ Novel Told from Jason Voorhees’ POV

Stephen King is always working on something. The prolific master of horror seems to churn out a book every few months, firing away at one tale of terror after the next, with no signs of slowing down. King is such an institution that he can probably get literally anything published at this point, even a grocery list. And while King will continue to thrive as long as he’s typing away, and publishers will continue to eat it up, he’s not above waxing hypothetically about books he’ll probably never ...

The Shadow of the Wind and the remarkable success of Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Although modelled on the storytelling of Dickens and Tolstoy, his enormously popular novels were sharply attuned to our timesAlthough all of Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s most successful books were published in the 21st century – The Shadow of the Wind, the first of the quartet on which his reputation rests, appeared in Spanish in 2001, and in English three years later – he was, at heart, a 19th-century novelist. His aim, in which he succeeded, was to emulate the narratively propulsive but socially reflec...
