'This is revolutionary’: new online bookshop unites indies to rival Amazon

Bookshop.org, which launched in the US earlier this year, has accelerated UK plans and goes online this week in partnership with more than 130 shopsIt is being described as a “revolutionary moment in the history of bookselling”: a socially conscious alternative to Amazon that allows readers to buy books online while supporting their local independent bookseller. And after a hugely successful launch in the US, it is open in the UK from today.Bookshop was dreamed up by the writer and co-founder of...

Selecting a different file manager for "Open Path"

I don't like Windows Explorer. I use a different file manager instead. Trying to set it as a default file manager caused various issues with other programs that were sadly non-resolvable. Replacing those programs also wasn't viable. So back to Windows Explorer it is. Calibre itself worked fine with a non-default file manager though. Is there any way to tell it specifically to use my own file manager instead of Windows Explorer when opening a path? :thanks:

POTD: Romanian AIMS-74 in Polish Bullrun

The 16th Pomeranian Mechanised Division has traditions from 1945, but has been active since 1990 and forward. In our Photo Of The Day, the highlight is the Romanian AIMS-74 which you can see above. It uses the 5.45x39mm round, and the AKM gas block is the giveaway into recognizing it according to the connoisseurs. The pictures were taken during […] Read More … The post POTD: Romanian AIMS-74 in Polish Bullrun appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Don't #WalkAway.

A recent piece at The American Conservative by Rod Dreher, Joe Rogan World vs. NPR World contains these two quotes:...NPR sounds like Vatican Radio from the Church of Secular Progressivism, ...The New York Times reads like L’Osservatore Romano of the same pseudo-religion.Do read the whole thing.  This is not surprising to me, but it is beautifully expressed.Back in 2008 I wrote The Church of the MSM and the New Reformation, a review of media bias as seen through the lens of Professor of Communic...

Another viewer problem, this time with AZW3

Hi all, I was having issues w/ an EPUB book last week, and it turns out that Calibre doesn't support fixed layout EPUB's. I'm now having what seems like a similar issue with an AZW3 bought on Amazon. I de-drm'ed it. It loads fine in the Kindle app, but when I read it in Calibre viewer, formatting is a mess. Is this some kind of unspported AZW3? And any way to convert it to something usable?

e-book viewer not responding

Recently my e-book viewer stopped working. I was running Calibre 5.4.2 and when I double click on a book, all I get is the window frame from the e-book viewer which says Loading book and Not Responding. After searching this forum, I tried running calibre from the command line Quote: calibre-debug -w filename I've attached screen shots of what I got. Meanwhile, I discovered that Apprentice Alf plugin was not compatible with Calibre 5 so...

KT3 Hardware Mod Question

I have been looking in to modifying my Kindle KT3 and there does not seem to be much information on the internal connections/pads/pins beyond the serial and USB boot modifications for jailbreaking and recovery. I attached an image. Does anyone know what the connections are that I marked on the image of the board or if there is anyway to get internal access to a system bus such as USB Host or PCI-E to add other devices such as mass storage? Attached Thumbnails ...

Weekend Reading 11.1.20

Hi friends, how are you feeling today? I didn’t celebrate Halloween this year, I just couldn’t get in the mood. The holidays are trickier this season with limited gatherings, but I woke up excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I hope this slower pace we’ve all adapted to continues. I plan to keep the next two months as simple as possible with minimal (but festive!) projects and decorations. I’m moving my office furniture today so my desk faces the window because there is less natural light dur...

Evidence Suggests Hunter Biden Committed Federal Felony when He Purchased Gun

Joe Biden and crackhead son Hunter Biden U.S.A. – -(Ammoland.com)- “A source with knowledge of the situation has revealed … that in October 2018, Hunter Biden's handgun was taken from his vehicle without his knowledge by Hallie Biden — the widow of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's son Beau — and she placed it in a garbage can outside a Delaware supermarket,” The Blaze reported Thursday. “Delaware State Police on Thursday told TheBlaze the case was referred for a decision on prosecu...

Fox girl in a Liberty Dress

Her dress is Liberty of London cotton lawn- lucky her! She is also wearing a cashmere cardigan and a lacy shawl. Do you want to know about the fabrics? When the pandemic started and we were first staying home (not at all unusual for me), I ordered up a bunch of new Liberty fabric (from here) because why not. Retail therapy, presents in the mail and all. The cashmere sweater was cut from a much bigger sweater that had holes in it. Her shawl is from a scrap of lace curtain that I got from my ...

How James Beard came to define good taste and fine dining in ‘Man Who Ate Too Much’

By Richard Cytowic On a picnic in Southwest France with Alice B. Toklas and company in tow, overlooking a spectacular vista and the house where Maurice Ravel had lived, James Beard observed that Toklas insisted on sitting with her back to the scenery. “I never face the view,” she tells him. “It takes my mind off eating.” James Beard constantly fixed his mind on food, its accoutrements, and above all the sensuous pleasures of eating. The latter formed the leitmotif of his life. Born in Portland, ...
