Calibre Database READ ONLY?

I have a library of about 10,000 documents used by people in different locations. I've tested "sharing" by using SSHFS to copy the LIBRARIES to the different users but I DO NOT want anyone to add, remove or modify entries. I DO want them to be able to use all the search facilities of the program. New documents (common) or removal of old documents (extremely rare) would be emailed to me where I update the master LIBRARY and update all the remote libraries. I tried the CALIBRE-SERVER but it is...

Problems with DOC format

Hi I have installed Calibre 3.48.0 on Windows 7 and set up a server with a large number of books which I have been accessing using both local and remote connections online, via an Android tablet. Everything has worked great so far, in terms of adding and accessing books. One small problem I am unable to figure out: this has to do with books that are in DOC format when I add them. It seems I am unable to read them remotely. The server directory for the book, when I open it, shows the .doc f...

Strewth, bloody, rooted: is there a quintessentially Australian swear word?

In this book extract, Amanda Laugesen says it’s hard to argue that Australians swear more than others, but we do our best, and we try to be inventive in the processLinguist Geoffrey Hughes writes that “people swear by what is most potent to them”. What is considered to be “most potent” changes across time, although taboo has often focused on the religious (hell), the sexual (fuck), and the excretory (shit). More recently racial, sexist and other discriminatory epithets have become our most taboo...

What is Bryophyllum used for? Native to the island of Madagascar, the Bryophyllum genus is notable for vegetatively growing small plantlets on the fringes of the leaves. While still commonly known as Bryophyllum, this genus has now been incorporated into the larger Kalanchoe genus, so to be botanically correct all plants known as Bryophyllum should now instead be correctly named as Kalanchoe. Although some species of which, notably Kalanchoe daigremontiana and Kalanchoe delagoensis, are p...

Red? Blue? What if you’re Purple…Or Green.

With all due respect to fellow garden industry bloggers, columnists, authors, speakers, and social media influencers who choose a different path, I chose long ago not to bring politics into my own garden writing.  I strongly believe people need a break from a constant barrage of Red vs. Blue; and there are plenty of contentious horticultural issues to debate for those of us who love to debate them. But after experiencing a deeply troubling 2020 – a year that all of us have reluctantly shared – ...

Yesterday was a good day...

...and I didn't have to use my AK. Which is a good thing, because I don't have an AK. Leave the peasant conscript rifles for the peasants, I say. (Just kidding. Save the hate mail.)Anyway, Thursday and Friday were unseasonably warm for mid-November here in Indy, but the weather was supposed to revert to type for the weekend, so I wanted to get in some outdoor dining while the getting was good.Thursday was almost a scrub because, despite the thermometer briefly reaching a freakishly balmy 68°F, ...

Font issue

Troubleshooting Down Page Button acting up on 4th Gen Kindle

In the last few days the Down Page Button on my old 4th Generation Kindle has not been working right. If I try to move down the page to select a different book to read, it often does not want to move. Or if I want to move down the page to change the setting or whatever, it doesn't always want to move down the page. It's a pretty old kindle so maybe there is nothing that can be done, but I thought I would ask if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Saving/Loading times

I've just upgraded to Sigil 1.41 and find my currently in progress book takes something like 55 seconds to save, 30 seconds to load. It's not a massive problem, though slightly disconcerting to see 'Not Responding' appear alongside the Sigil masthead and the screen go grey when saving. If left it does save, however. This particular book is 20,000 words including about 35 pictures. My CSS and markup are minimalist. Similar previous books load in a few seconds and and I can't detect any great ...
