Unpossible.

"A gunman opened fire from the steps of New York City’s Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine just after an outdoor choir performance there on Sunday, and was himself shot and wounded by police, according to police and a Reuters photographer at the scene."This must be a mistaken report, because handguns are doubleplus illegal in NYC. EDITED TO ADD: CNN says the shooter has croaked. . [Author: Tam]

Literary Losses

This wretched year has taken John le Carre now. I guess I'll be doing some spy novel reading this week, as soon as I finish Flashman and the Redskins. On a more positive note, it looks like all of the Flashman Papers are available on Kindle now, and that did not used to be the case. . [Author: Tam]

Sentry-12 Pump Action Shotgun From Blackwater Firearms – Review

Sentry-12 Pump Action Shotgun From Blackwater Firearms – Review U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- It seems to be more and more uncommon to find new firearms designs these days.  R&D are expensive, and it's easier to re-hash an old idea than it is to build a new one from the ground-up.  It is in the “newness” that we find possibility and excitement.  But is the execution of this new design good enough to compete with the tried and true?  Let's take a look at the Blackwater Sentry-12 tactical shotgun. ...

Silliness Loathed holiday movies

In thinking about Christmas movies, I tend to rate them in four categories: Love, it makes Christmas for me; like it, brings cheer; don’t especially like it, but I don’t mind being in the same room; hate with the fire of a thousand burning suns. So, I’ve got two other people in my Christmas bubble and we’ve come up with a plan for watching Christmas movies, namely, that each person gets two vetoes. In discussing the movies and our favorites, it’s already become obvious that each of us alread...

Has anybody else had Calibre eject their keyboard?

Very rarely (three times in the last year), using Eject Device will also disconnect my keyboard. I'm not able to reliably replicate it, so getting a debug log would be difficult and I suspect it might be a system bug instead of a Calibre-specific one. I do use USB Drive Letter Manager which affects keyboards (see BadUSB Device Blocking) for more information) so I wonder if that might be interfering. I'm just curious whether anyone else has had this issue. It's not a big issue, just strange enoug...

Weekend Reading 12.13.20

Ugh, here we go again in California with further lockdowns due to rising virus cases. My county has major restrictions on businesses ability to operate and a stay home order until mid January. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating for all my friends who own small businesses and are barely surviving. I joined a friend for one last bit of merriment on Friday night because all the restaurants and bars (and so many other businesses) in the Bay Area are forced to close again as of this weekend. Damn, th...

Master spy writer John le Carre dies at 89, agent says

LONDON — John le Carre, the spy-turned-novelist whose elegant and intricate narratives defined the Cold War espionage thriller and brought acclaim to a genre critics had once ignored, has died. He was 89. Le Carre’s literary agency, Curtis Brown, said Sunday that he died in Cornwall, southwest England on Saturday after a short illness. The death was not related to COVID-19. In such classics as “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and “The Honourable Schoolboy,” Le ...

Calibre 5.7.2 Hangs When Restarted In Debug Mode

I am running Calibre 5.7.2 in Ubuntu 20.10. In order to diagnose a problem with the DeDRM plugin I have tried, multiple times, to reboot in debug mode, both from the menu and by using Shift+Ctl+R. Each time, the program hangs. Nothing is clickable and when I minimize the window I see the box that reads "Starting up, please wait...Initializing user interface". I end up having to kill the process. Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas? UPDATE: After killing the process, I do get this log, which...

Lucasfilm has slowly been revealing new characters and details about the forthcoming new publishing initiative Star Wars: The High Republic. Libra Physical buttons changin characters size

Hi all, Just bought the Libra H2O and, was suprised about it's behavior on 1 point: When I go in the characters size menu, change the characters size and go back to reading, the physical buttons don't change the pages anymore but, the characters size. If I don't want that behavior, I need to take another action before going back to my reading; either switch the alignement or simply going in the settings and get out after making no changes. Chatting with someone on Kobo help, I was told this ...

Best Ebookstore

I've searched the threads here and really can't find one with the answer to my question. Google is not much help at all. Anyhow, here's the question: I'm using a linux computer and calibre for book management. Ereader is a Samsung 7 tablet. So far I haven't found a place (Google Play, Kobo, B&N) where I can purchase an epub title that doesn't have digital rights management. I tried to purchase a book on Google Play and all I get is a link that will direct me to download book to Adobe DRM which ...

Kakugo-like font, but with l/I distinction?

Odd request, perhaps. I'm aware that Kobo UD Kakugo is intended for Japanese, but having tested them all, it's actually my preferred font for reading English.I simply find it easier on the eyes, particularly if I'm not wearing my glasses/contacts, or if I'm on the treadmill. The one complaint I have about it, however, is that it has no distinction between a lowercase 'L' and an uppercase 'I', and it can get quite confusing with unfamiliar names. I don't suppose anyone has come up with a modifi...

Poetry Benrath, Henry: Liebe [german]. V1. 13.12.2020

Apae

Hello all, I'm Apae on most forums. Came here looking for info whether it was possible to read kindle files on my pocketbook, and found a world of possibilities for e-readers. Although I'm on my third reader (a cheapy first, then a pocketbook touch HD3 that suffered a broken substrate last summer, after which I immediately bought a replacement), I never did much else than just reading (lots of) ebooks. I found here that I can edit metadata, use applications to order my collection, etc. No do...

Vortex AMG UH-1 Gen 2 Holosight ALL NEW REVIEW ~ VIDEO

AmmoLand editor, Jim Grant reviews the Vortex AMG UH-1 Gen 2 Holosight optic. U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- When I first heard about Vortex entering the holographic weapon sight market back in 2017 at SHOT Show with their AMG UH-1, I was intrigued, to say the least. While I'm heavily invested in EoTech sights, I'm not blind to their faults. That and my experience with Vortex's magnified optics definitely gave me high hopes for their first foray into this new realm of gun-sights. That said, I had no...
