Unintended Consequences

There will come a day when our society will adjust to the fact that there's a permanent record of almost every dumb, unkind, and assholish thing people say and do*.  When that happens, it will have two effects: People will stop saying and doing so many dumb, unkind, and assholish things, and more slack will be cut for the times when people do do those things, providing that there's a clear absence of malice.  In the meantime, we're going to have ugly Gordian knots like this one. * Whether...

Newbie: Seeking Additional "How To" Info

Hello-- I'm hesitant to ask because this is so basic, but I've downloaded, read (and highlighted!) the Calibre User Guide, but being new I still have some questions and was wondering if there's an even more "plain language" guide(s)/site out there I can read so I don't ask super-simplistic questions here, like I still can't figure out the difference between a category and a tag! I'm particularly looking for info on organizing my Library. Thank you! :)

Scheduled download of epub file

Hi Can someone point me in the right direction of setting up a scheduled download for a file which is already an *.epub? This is the website: https://www.themonthly.com.au/ebook You need to login to get behind the paywall, but then you can see the epub files ready to download. I have been manually downloading & emailing via calibre. I would like to create a recipe similar to those for RSS feeds, to auto download this file & email to my Kindle. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Man...

POTD: Cloning the Heckler & Koch MP5

In 2014 TFB’s Photo Of The Day (POTD) was introduced, and many interesting photos have passed since then. Today we’ll take a closer look at clones of the Heckler & Koch MP5 from a German collection. They are all placed on a 120mm mortar ammo crate. Here are all of my MP5 clones (not counting […] Read More … The post POTD: Cloning the Heckler & Koch MP5 appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

10 sec read: The umbrella

As tradition dictates, upon entering his Zen master’s house, the disciple left his shoes and umbrella outside. “I saw through the window that you were arriving,” said the master. “Did you leave your shoes to the right or the left of the umbrella?” “I haven’t the least idea. But what does that matter? I was […]

Problems with columns

New to MobileRead and this is my first post, so please forgive any formatting errors or if my issue has already been addressed. While trying to delete some information columns I didn't need anymore, I apparently screwed up. Now the main information screen displays absolutely no information. It's completely blank. When I select an author (still visible in the left side panel) nothing appears. There are no column headers visible at the top of the info screen. When I change the layout view, a...

Hair straightening began in the 1890s and became a fashion staple in the 1950s. Long gone are the days where you have to hunch over an ironing board or sit in a salon for hours on end. Olight Odin Mini Budget Tactical Rifle Light Review

The Olight Odin Mini Mounted on a LaRue Tactical Ultimate Upper AR-15. IMG Jim Grant U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- In the past few years, the tactical weapon light market has seen a deluge of companies and products flooding the market, like the Olight Odin Mini. And with the market so saturated with new-comers, for a company's product to really shine, it must differentiate itself from the competition in a meaningful way. Whether that's pricepoint, features or durability, the fact remains that produc...

Frozen Libra/not responding

I was uploading books on my Libra from iPad Pro and when disconnecting, the screen froze to the “connected and charging” screen. I held the power button for 10 seconds as mentioned on the website and now it’s a blank screen with the white light flashing (just above the buttons on the face of the device). When I hold the power button for 10 seconds the flashing light goes away. when I hold it again, the screen kind of blinks like it wants to power up, but then goes blank again and white light fla...

Find unused embedded fonts?

I was looking at a epub in the edit tool and ran Tools->subset embedded fonts It found one font that was not used in the book and removed it. Is there any way I can run a search on my library to find books that have fonts that are not used in the text of a book? I check out the options of "Quality Check" plugin, but this does not seem to be an option. I'd rather not have to open every book with embedded fonts and run subset if there is an easier way to find books like this. Thanks.

Suddenly, it' almost January

Just popped in to say hi. I figured a journal page is good enough as a posting tool. Back to the no typing thing. Easier to post one photo here instead of trying to compose on the screen. Simple. I'm not getting anywhere in terms of where I thought I was going. Just hello and I'll try to be back soon.  Spirit Cloth Shop update planned for New Year's Eve, but we'll see really. Maybe there will just be soup.

Grinch Punch Mocktail

I found a recipe online but it required frozen lemonade concentrate, which the grocery store did not have. It also required pineapple juice, of which my husband is not a fan. So here’s my version. The lemon lime Koolaid can be hard to get. I got mine from Amazon. Make sure it’s unsweetened, too. [Author: Melissa Beth]

Novels are terrible and you'll never convince me otherwise | Prove me wrong

We don’t need fiction – the real world is strange enough. Plus, fancy writing is incomprehensible, argues Ben Butler. Lucy Clark tries to prove him wrongBen Butler: Lucy, novels are terrible and you’ll never convince me otherwise.Genre fiction can be OK, provided it doesn’t go on for too long. I haven’t finished the Game of Thrones books, but as I recall they increasingly resemble a building material in shape, dimensions and weight as the series wears on. Continue reading...

Abbyy Finereader 15 gothic/Fraktur Altdeutsch/Oldgerman

Kiley Reid: 'The premise that literary fiction has to be a drag is so silly'

The novelist’s hit debut, a witty spin on race, feminism and sex based on her time as a nanny in New York, has even won fans among her former employers…This time last year, Kiley Reid was a tantalising rumour, the truth of which was known only to her publishers and to the film company that had optioned her debut novel two years before it was ready to see the light of day. When Such a Fun Age was published – on New Year’s Eve in the US and a week later in the UK – the rumour checked out: here was...

Number of pages in a chapter

One of the options for the header on a Kobo is the progress through the current chapter. I have found that this seems to work for some epubs, but not others where it will only display the current position in the whole book. It appears that this is not uncommon as there is a note in the header settings on the Kobo stating that it might not work with some books. I was puzzling over this so I opened a book that worked, and one that did not, in Sigil and tried to see if I could spot what made the...

How to tell viewer to ignore embedded font?

Hi, I could not find a setting that tells the viewer to ignore the embedded font and use the one from the settings. It seems to apply only to unformatted text as stated in the settings section. I would assume that the chance that the reader does not like the embedded font is quite common or at least possible. So shouldn't there be an option to do that? I use it quite often with my reader on Android, so I was a bit surprised not to find it here. Any change chance to fix that?
