Anthropomorphism and plants

Meet ‘Charlotte,’ which will always be an “it” to me. This won’t be a popular opinion. But it’s been on my mind for a while, and, as the practice becomes more and more common, I finally had to say something. As we know, most plants (by no means all) are hermaphrodites, with flowers that have both male and female sex organs—but it’s complicated, much more complicated than I will go into here. Indeed, I am not interested in going into it, because there is zero science behind indoor/outdoor gard...

One Night in Lexington

Bobbi was watching The Queen's Gambit last night and I remarked on how a particular scene seemed a subtle nod to Murray Head's "One Night in Bangkok" and it turned out she wasn't familiar with the tune... Louis Awerbuck had an interesting "final exam" for his firearms classes, a time pressure enhanced shooting drill on a target he called his "South African Computer" (Louis was a vocally proud Luddite). Louis dispensing wisdom, this time on mechanical offset. Said target consisted of a clothed torso mannequin target, surrounded by several other clothed torso mannequin targets, all of which were on hinged, pivoting arms so that Louis could control their bobbing gyrations by tugging ...

Getting Quiet: Redefining The Integrally Suppressed Rifle

There are many suppressed rifles with permanently attached silencers on the market, but what exactly is an integrally suppressed rifle (ISR). When I think integrally suppressed, I think of the suppression system built directly into the barrel. A good example of this is the Curtis Tactical 9mm bolt gun that Pete reviewed for TFB’s Silencer […] Read More … The post Getting Quiet: Redefining The Integrally Suppressed Rifle appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Why are all text columns shown in tag browser? (And changing column types?)

Mostly just curious about why "text, not shown in tag browser" isn't an option except for longtext. My best guess is because hiding categories just makes it redundant. Also, I'm curious why column types are impossible to change at all. Some of them would obviously cause problems (text=> integer, datetime/booleananything else, possibly taglike=>text/enumerated), but others seem like they'd be easy to convert (e.g. enumerated=> taglike, textenumerated, rating=>integer).

I have a very well cared for Kindle paperwhite (latest version) with a like new leather cover from Oberon design. The cover has a Tree of Life theme. Tool to add ToC (bookmarks) to existing PDF?

Hello, Some PDFs have no table of contents (bookmarks). Here's an example as shown in SumatraPDF. Is there a software* to add one to an existing PDF file, ie. I don't have the original source? Thank you. * qpdf, cpdf, mutool, etc. -- Edit: Should have checked the archives before asking  Just create a text file by copy/pasting the ToC (with a bit of regex, possibly), and run this command: Code: cpdf.exe -add-bookmarks bookmarks.txt input.pdf -o output.pdf ...

POTD: German Snipers with the G22 in .300 Win Mag

Scharfschützen – snipers in German is the theme for this Photo Of The Day. The photo above is pretty cool, with the .300 Win Mag just leaving the muzzle on its journey. Multiple menu pages

Hi, I've downloaded a manual from the web and converted it to a zip file and then to epub. I have nearly 300 split html files. After each chapter the menu is repeated all the way through the book. For example a chapter page is index4_split_001.html, the next page displayed is a repeat of the menu; index5_split_000. The following page is the next chapter page index5_split_001.html, which is correct. The next page is the same menu again but now named index6_split_000.html and so on. So basically a...

A few questions... (template language, mainly)

Hello! I have a few questions about Calibre interface and I thought that it would be better to ask everything at the same time... So first, I've already looked for it in the parameters, and I'm pretty sure that it doesn't exist, but is it possible to disable the author_sort for one of my libraries? I have one library for my originals books, for which the author sort is very useful, but I have another one where I put all my fanfictions. It's weird to see pseudos like "magical blue cat" at "ca...

Touch Authors with Middle Names/Multiple Initials not Displaying Correctly in Library

Hi! Hoping someone can help me with the following issue: On my Nook (Glowlight Plus 7.8"), authors with middle names or initials aren't displaying properly in the Library. For example, "Arthur Conan Doyle" (Author sort: "Doyle, Arthur Conan") simply appears as Arthur Doyle and "J. K. Rowling" (Author sort: "Rowling, J. K.") appears as J. Rowling. I think this is a Nook issue (and not a Calibre issue) for two reasons: 1) I uploaded the same files to an older Kindle and they displayed properly...

Florida Woman Accused of Shooting Officer Serving Warrant

U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- On 28 September 2020, a warrant was served in Jacksonville Florida, just before 8 a.m. The warrant was not a no-knock warrant. There is evidence the officers serving the warrant attempted to announce themselves with loudspeakers and by knocking. The warrant was served by a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team and the DEA. When they did not get an answer, they started to break in. They were not wearing body cameras. Diamonds Ford started shooting at them. She hit on...

Boyue Mars Android 8 upgrade without Windows?

I have a Boyue Mars that runs Android 6.0 that I'd like to update to 8.0. The instructions talk about double-clicking DriverInstall.EXE, which I know in advance will do nothing interesting on my Ubuntu Linux 20.04LTS system. Is there a manual process I can use, or am I stuck having to find a Windows system? Aloso, there's a "warm reminder" that I should "Please properly back up all important files in advance, upgrade will clear all the file contents." Does this mean I have to reinstall my apps...

Book: In the Beginning…Was the Command Line

I love Neal Stephenson. I’ve read all of his books, some of them multiple times. Well, except the Baroque Cycle trilogy, which I’m saving for a special period of time to get lost in them, and from everything. Last week I read In the Beginning…Was the Command Line. For the second time. This time I read it on my Kindle, which was fitting. Stephenson wrote it in 1999. As we exit 2020, it’s a great reminder of the place technology was around 20 years ago. It shows how much has changed and how ...

Buddy Mark Green and I were both impressed with the crispness and clarity of the Lucid Optics SC9 Compact 9-29×56 Spotting Scope. U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Scrambling up and down mountains hunting is tough duty. On a good elk hunt, I can hardly walk by the 3rd day due to being so sore.
