Short Fiction Cox, Erle: The Great Mendax Transmitter (v1); 3 Jan 2021

Erle Cox (1873-1950) was an Australian journalist, and author of three novels: Out of the Silence, (1919), Fools' Harvest (1939); and The Missing Angel (1947). These books are in the Library, re-introduced, having been moved to off-line when the site changed to L+70. He also wrote a number of short stories, which appeared in Australian newspapers but which were never collected into a volume. Several of them feature Mendax, a mad scientist of epic proportions, and his crackpot inventions. Men...

Misplaced Childhood

Just watched the last ep of season 2 of The Mandalorian. All the feels. I was laughing and clapping and crying and all that stuff.  "That was just fan service!"  "Bitch, this fan's been waiting for that service since 1984."  I mean, I liked The Force Awakens just fine, since it was basically Star Wars All Over Again, but it was just returning to the well of the original. And the ending of Rogue One had me ooh-ing and ahh-ing and nodding my head at the slickly done symmetry...  But thi...

Books Read in 2020

At the start of 2019 I gave myself a goal to read more books (in an effort to rekindle my inner bookworm), and this past year saw a continued growth in the number of books I read, which makes me very happy. Following the 11 I read in 2019, I got through 16 this past year, which falls just short of the goal of 18 I had given myself, which is close enough for me. I did hit some dead spots throughout the year where I didn’t read any, and a few (like Ametora, Pure Invention, and Killing the Bus...

Little Island Coming in 2021 and I Can’t Wait!

When a friend spotted this image in the Secret NYCC Instagram feed, she alerted me immediately because – I mean my God! What IS it? Well, it’s a 2.4-acre floating island in the Hudson River off the west side of Manhattan that is sure to be the next BIG thing in gardeny tourist attractions after its opening this spring. It’ll be helped by proximity to the OTHER hot gardeny place to go – The High Line. That wildly popular elevated garden and the new one – called Little Island – were both instigat...

An odd request...

Hasn't been much in the way of snow so far this winter, and I'm pretty ambivalent on that. It's pretty, but it can be a pain to shovel and it pretty well grounds the Mustang and at least puts a damper on driving the Bimmer until they have the main roads cleared. I'll slither a couple blocks to College Ave, but driving for a few miles with a wary eye on the traction control is a pain and there's just not enough snow in an Indiana winter to make a dedicated set of winter tires/wheels a worthwhile ...

K5 Any Way (Currently), To Jailbreak My Kindle?

My kindle is a 10th gen 2019 (non paperwhite) kindle. It's currently running firmware version 5.13.1. All I really want to do is make a custom screen saver or maybe install something like chess. Is there any possible way to Jailbreak my Kindle? Even better, is there anyway to do the things I listed above without jailbreaking? Thx!

Kobo Libra H2O or Kindle Paperwhite or... ?

I am 100% new to the e-book and e-ink reader world. I just purchased both a Kindle Paperwhite (32 GB, no ads) and a Kobo Libra H2O. I plan on deciding which one is my favorite within the next 2-3 weeks and then, returning the other device. I am also new to this forum (this will be my first post after reading some threads here and trying a couple of mods on my Kobo). There are things that I like in one of the readers more than the other that software can't solve, like the lighter hardware and fl...

HKS Speed-Loader Review: Compact Lightening-Fast Six-Gun Reloads

Snub-nosed pocket revolvers like this S&W 442 are much easier to reload with an HKS speedloader. IMG Jim Grant U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- When I first started carrying a gun I hauled around a 5-shot S&W 442 with two HKS speedloaders. Like millions of other concealed carriers, I took the advice of a gun shop guru who insisted that wheel guns were the end-all, be-all in pocket carry. And in many ways they are correct; double-action snub-nosed revolvers are very easy to conceal, flawlessly reliable,...

"Open spread" PDFs to single page, batch convert

Hello, I am sorry for what I assume is a basic and/or oft-answered question but I've searched and haven't found good answers: I have several documents in PDFs from old classes (I work with classic texts so these are past copyright etc) in which each page in the PDF file represents two pages in what would be a printed format. I think these are sometimes called "open spreads", ie as if someone scanned an open book 2 page-sides at a time. I want to, and have students who want to, read these on a K...

Midwest Industries Marlin 1895 Picatinny Scope Rail Review

Although known for their more modern firearm accessories, Midwest Industries also makes mounts for older guns like this Marlin 1895. IMG Jim Grant U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Last year I was inspired to ditch my AR-15 for a Marlin 1895. See, I shot a mid-sized doe with an AR-15 firing a supersonic 300blk round designed specifically for that purpose; Problem is, even with a broadside angle on the deer and shot placement behind the shoulders, the doe still managed to run 60 yards before expiring. To...

How to make Chinese thread books with dozens of pockets

Zhen xian bao, or a Chinese thread book, is a folder with compartments for storing small items. Each compartment folds down flat, making it a compact way to store things like thread. There are a lot of great videos on how to make them yourself, and they can be quite creatively designed once you master the basics. — Read the rest

A Lucky Dinner

Hey! It is me Josie on New Year's Day. My mama who is a nurse had to work and I stayed with Meema and Grumpy. We did arts and crafts and read books and played with stuff and took a nap.  Meema fixed a special Good Luck dinner and my dad came up but Mama was on call till eight so we fixed some Good Luck food to take home to her after I had my bath and ran around like a Wild Thing. The Good Luck dinner was collards and black eyed peas and rice and corn bread and barbecued chick...

How it Might Happen

Dear Ragmates, Things are not working out at the moment. It seems my upload speed here has degraded and posting visuals has become impossible. Internet here in the woods, well it just sucks. On, Off, blah, blah, blah. I'm tired of fighting it and spending all my time sitting in front of this screen screaming at it. I will be on Instagram, when my phone signal allows, for now.   I hate typing so let me just say the shop update has been postponed and I have, actually, a lot more wood to stack. L...

A recurring theme of late...

From Reason magazine: "As with far too many public policy disputes (over climate change, criminal justice, health care, etc.), it is not enough to merely observe that the opposing team has different ideas about how best to address a problem. No, the bad guys are either intentionally trying to make things worse or just too blinkered to admit there's a problem in the first place. The more partisan you are, the more likely you feel surrounded by murderers and denialists."It's a good piece and wort...
