Calibre dies on Linux Mint 20

I've been running calibre for years on ubuntu and linux mint systems. I recently installed it on my Linux Mint 20 system and it dies, not immediately, but within 6-10 hours. I started from command line to see if it would provide any errors, but it merely shows me the command prompt in my terminal when it exits. For comparison, I am running under Fedora as a workaround, and it seems fine, though I'd prefer to use my LM box. Any ideas?

Maybe two bugs

In the "Edit metadata in bulk" window, tab "search and replace", search mode "Regular expression", edit "Search for", does not recognize the "\s" symbol as a generic space, while in regex searches in the calibre editor the "\s" symbol is recognized as expected. If the "Case sensitive" checkbox IS selected, the search does NOT take place respecting upper/lower case; if it is not selected, the search takes place respecting upper/lower case.

Calibre stopped seeing all my libraries except the current one

(Using MacOS 10.11.6, Calibre 3.42) I have several calibre libraries, and have been using and switching among them quite smoothly. Now all of a sudden I seem to be "stuck" in my current library ("Nonfiction') and calibre no longer "sees" that there are any other libraries to switch to. Examination of files in the Finder shows all the library folders to be there where they ought to be, also they all seem to have .db files with respectable sizes and no weirdness in their "last modified" dates. Lower specs: no SD card, lower display resolution (194ppi vs 226ppi), CPU with 4 cores vs 8 cores of Alita.
