Real gardening trends for real gardeners

Sadly, I don’t think bulb forcing will ever be much of a trend for home gardeners. As much as I respect the work of industry groups that like to help both clients and consumers by putting together nicely packaged trend reports—which I read—it just seems like the real world of gardeners is messier, more diverse, and more interesting. (At least gardening trend reports aren’t as silly as Pantone’s yearly color announcements.) This year, I find that announced trends from Garden Media Group bear m...

Did I get a bad P6?

I bought a Likebook P6 recently, and I really like the size and the simple interface. But. Text and icons often look splotchy, and text fades after it's been on the screen for a few seconds. The screen also fades a kind of gray marble pattern in and out sometimes. Is this normal or did I get a bad unit?

Minimal Barriers and Timing at the US Capitol, 6 January, 2021

Widely Spaced Capitol Police. Picture taken about 11:14 a.m. on 6 January, 2021. Courtesy Dean Weingarten U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The barriers put up to keep the crowds of protestors away from the Capitol building on 6 January 2021, were minimal and easily overcome. They were primarily psychological. An ordinary 10-year-old child could push their way through them, with minimal effort. Physical barriers must be backed up by manpower if they are to be effective. This is especially true for suc...

Trampling 2A at Core of Biden’s Empty Promise of ‘Unity’

Does this look like the face of a man interested in unity? Joe Biden can’t unify the nation when he’s vowing to crush the rights of 100 million gun owners. IMG NRA-ILA U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- In a video message broadcast by CNN, Democrat Joe Biden put the lie to his widely-reported intent to preach unity during his inaugural address to what essentially will be a capital city occupied by some 22,000 National Guard troops by basically declaring war on about 100 million of his constituents. “My...

Survivor of Grizzly Bear Attack in Dupuyer, Montana Used .44 Magnum

Grizzly Bear U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Ken Ledeau is a semi-retired trucker who rented a cabin near Dupuyer, Montana. He loved the area, the views, and the wildlife he would see while walking for exercise. He would walk up and down a finger ridge on one side of Dupuyer Creek drainage. The land was mostly open on the ridge, while the creek had dense stands of willow trees and other vegetation. Ken was 59 years old when the bear attacked him. Neighbors in the Dupuyer area had warned him about ...

Book cover generation - is there a fast way?

I rarely generate book covers, usually only when entering an "announced for the future" book that has no cover yet (I have a "Books Wanted" library of empty placeholder books). But when I do generate these covers, is there any way to get through the available covers to the one you want quickly? There are a handful of cover graphics, and a handful of colors. When you click "Generate Cover" Calibre cycles through all these combinations, apparently randomly, since several covers may repeat befor...

Concert photographers help out Alex’s Bar with new book

With its distinct red decor and velvet paintings of Elvis Presley and Mexican wrestlers hanging on the walls, Alex’s Bar in  has been a Long Beach mainstay for more than 20 years. Throughout its long tenure, the venue, which was opened by Alex Hernandez in January 2000, has hosted acts such as Black Flag, Eagles of Death Metal, punk legend Mike Watt and John Doe of X. Quote of the Day - Roger Kimball Edition

From his American Greatness piece A Party of Faction and Fantasy: The central fact to appreciate about Donald Trump is that he was elected without the permission, and over the incredulous objections, of the woke oligarchy that governs us.  Exactly right.   Also this: Donald Trump brought peace to the Middle East, Joe Biden brought war to Washington.RTWT. Valentine's Day charcuterie board in a heart-shaped candy box

I absolutely love charcuterie boards, and this year I wanted to create a special one for Valentine's Day. When it came time to choose something to present it on, I thought outside the box by using... an actual box! I used an empty heart-shaped candy box to create a Valentine's Day charcuterie board — a HEARTcuterie board if you will — that's perfect for two people to share as a romantic snack or dinner. I started with an empty heart-shaped candy box, and yes, I did get to eat all the candy mys...

Stop Calibre from modifying file?

Every time I open an ebook in Calibre, it modifies the ebook in some way, clearly changing the file size. This is... less than desirable. Is there a way to turn this "feature" off?

How to get sample from PC Kindle to Calibre?

From Amazon's UK Kindle Store I've just chosen to sample a book on my iPad. I then used Send to Kindle in the iPad's Kindle app and it duly appeared in my PC Kindle. How can I now get it to appear in Calibre on my PC please, so that I can then convert it to a format I could send to a friend. If I like the sample, as I fully expect, I'll then buy it and repeat the process and make a gift of it. Terry

‘Orphan X’ novelist Gregg Hurwitz talks ‘Prodigal Son,’ Shakespeare and the home life of assassins

Gregg Hurwitz was already a successful author of standalone thrillers and mysteries when he started to think about writing the kind of big, action-packed series he’d long loved as a reader. “There’s so many characters I grew up with, and just love,” he says. “Whether it’s Jack Reacher, James Bond, Jason Bourne.” But he couldn’t quite get his head around what would make his hero — a character he thought of as Orphan X, a boy raised to be a secret government assassin — different from such legends ...

Viewer takes ages to load books

When looking for a book to read, I used to open book after book, reading a few lines, checking the index, etc. After version 3.48 that is no longer possible. The least I can call it is annoying, because it always takes up to 10 seconds or more to load a new book. Also when editing, I often save the changes, open the book, and check the changes made. When that takes more than say 2 seconds, it is irritating. Is it possible to download and use the previous viewer somewhere, without de-installin...

Where Things Stand At The Federal Level

U S Capital Building Congress United States/Washington DC – -(AmmoLand.com)- There is no sugar-coating it: Second Amendment supporters are in a tough spot at the federal level. The fact of the matter is that anti-Second Amendment extremists have taken the Presidency and have very narrow margins in the House and Senate. This is not an impossible situation, but Second Amendment supporters should be under no illusions about the difficult fights in the next four years. There is good news: Califor...
