2021.01 "Magnetic Flux" Looks great!! Thanks! (And one question)

The new icons make everything look so much nicer!! Thanks to everybody who put in the hard work!! Loving KOReader and never exit it anymore! Quick question... did the warmth settings change recently? I noticed last night around midnight that my Clara was cooler lit than expected. Went to the settings and changed the max warmth from 8pm to midnight and it got much warmer. Did something change in the algorithm for when to return to cooler color temps? It seems that it should stay at max for ...

Horror Cram, Ralph Adams: Black Spirits and White (ghosts). v1. 25 Jan 2021

Black Spirits and White Ralph Adams Cram (1863–1942): This collection has been called “one of the undeniable classics of weird fiction”. H. P. Lovecraft wrote, “In ‘The Dead Valley’ the eminent architect and mediaevalist Ralph Adams Cram achieves a memorably potent degree of vague regional horror through subtleties of atmosphere and description.” ============== Ralph Adams Cram (December 16, 1863 – September 22, 1942) was a prolific and influential American architect of collegiate and eccle...

A little good, a little bad, a little happy, a little sad.

I saved up from some writing projects to buy a birthday present for myself. I'd mentioned earlier that I wanted to do a project this year where I did a bunch of photography with the little Nikon 1 system. So I scared up a used Nikon 1 V2 body from KEH and, since candid portraiture of my friends is my favorite kind of photography, I rolled the dice on a low-priced 1 Nikkor 32mm f/1.2 on eBay. The 32mm/1.2 is a very well-reviewed portrait lens and the best piece of glass for the Nikon 1 system. ...

Quora question: "Why is the United States so messed up right now in 2021?"

My answer:100+ years of “public education” has produced the electorate we have today. Too many people can’t reason, have no coherent philosophy, have no knowledge of actual history (only “social justice” history), have been taught that Western Civilization is the root of all evil in the world, etc. It started in the very early 1900’s, driven by the wealthy industrialists to set up a system that would produce a two-tiered output - the actually educated sons & daughters of the elite who would be ...

Back to Writing

A 2021 goal of mine carried over from 2020 is to start writing again. While that means I'll return to posting book reviews here, I am also reviving the concept of my short-lived Brave and Bittersweet blog but over on Substack. It would mean a lot if any of you are interested in subscribing! And that's all I'll say about that for now. [Author: [email protected]]

Calibre Reader Ignores Background Color?

I was testing some of my own code using CSS body { background-color: #66ff66; ...} which is an obvious bright green background. But the Calibre book reader doesn't show me that green. I see it in the Calibre book Editor, and setting the cover from the epub also shows green--just not in the reader. If I go into the reader's Color preferences, I can change the background, but it appears to ignore the "Override all book colors: Never" setting. I'm seeing this on Win10 in Calibre v5.6 (portable)...

HELP. E-book Viewer PRINT QUALITY is poor

Could anyone please help find where to adjust the print quality settings when printing from the Calibre e-book viewer. The calibre e-book viewer does a magnificent job of printing to PDF however the quality especially with graphics/photos sometimes is poor. I suspect it has to do with the compression used when printing to PDF. Is there a way to adjust the settings somewhere in Calibre to produce a better quality PDF? Any help is appreciated Cheers Fibo

Slight delay in opening viewer

At some point in the last few versions, I've noticed that there's a small but noticable delay in ebook-viewer launching. It appears instantly in the task manager, but takes several seconds for the window to actually appear. I've tried opening a book from Calibre, opening a file associated with ebook-viewer, and opening the viewer directly, and the delay happened with all three. I also ran with a clean-config Calibre portable on both my SSD and my hard drive, and got the delay with both. Also im...

Weekend Reading 1.24.21

I took a long drive with a good friend yesterday, we drove out to Lake Sonoma to watch the sunset over the bridge and had such a great talk on the way. Little getaways are all we’ve got right now, so I’m spending time exploring parts of Northern California I haven’t seen in a long time or ever. Everything is going smoothly so far with the escrow on the little fixer upper we’re investing in, so if all goes well I’ll have “before” pictures to share in a few weeks, and of course all of my design id...

Why is California such a great place to write murder mysteries?

It’s a bright and sunny day in California. Isn’t it always? No dark storminess here. Waves kiss golden beaches, and flowers sprout nonstop. There’s movie-star glitz and glam, and palm trees sway like swooning lovers. The perfect state for murder. It must be, judging by the sheer volume of mystery novels, detective stories, whodunits, heart-throbbing thrillers and noir nightmares set amid Cali’s pleasantries, thanks to some of the best crime writers around. Bodies push up happy little daisies in ...

Custom Column names cut off

I just updated Calibre Portable from 5.4.2 to 5.10.1 on Win10 64bit today and now a number of the custom column names are truncated on the Edit Metadata screen. Is there a way to fix this? Without changing the layout view? None of them are particularly long. The first two that are truncated are definitely no longer than 'Author Sort' on the Basic Metadata side. And there's clearly space to the left of them so I don't know why they're suddenly truncated. I've attached a picture to show what I'm ...

Strategies for reviewing earlier books in a series

Does anyone have any strategies for refreshing your mind on earlier books in a series? Something you read a few years ago and have forgotten characters, plots points, etc.? I don't particularly want to go back and reread all the older books. Does Amazon's X-Ray give you a summary of characters and how they fit into a story? I am in the habit of putting all my Amazon purchases into Calibre and then side-loading them to my Kindle, which nukes X-Ray. So I don't know what it's capabilities are....

These 13 books make up California’s literary canon

California has been a stage for celebrated works of fiction, its lyrical landscapes the proscenium and often the star. And the state’s urban rivals, Los Angeles and San Francisco, elbow each other for attention, whether you take your words hard-boiled or gussied up with literary lather. Paging through books where California is the context writ large or small, a few truly great volumes deserve to be considered part of a canon of our golden state. Let’s try to see if we can boil down this canon to...

What do children’s authors read their own kids?

If you have kids, you know there’s no more cherished time with them than reading a story together. And as they age, it’s wonderful to see them pick up a book on their own and get lost in its pages. We asked four local children’s authors which books they’ve loved sharing: LA-by-way-of-the-South-Bronx author Lilliam Rivera has made a name for herself in the YA (young adult) and middle-grade markets with books like “The Education of Margot Sanchez,” “Dealing in Dreams,” “Never Look Back” and the “G...
