Why we have a Ministry of Controversy

Do politics belong in the garden or in a garden blog? I suggest that the answer to this question doesn’t matter much; politics are there already and have been for decades. I was reminded of this recently while cleaning out a closet that had long been abandoned as a large hole in the wall to fill with junk. In it, I found several issues of Horticulture, for whom I wrote columns and features at one time. The first one, published on the back page in 2008 (screenshot shown above, illustration by Br...

Large epub files won't send to Kobo Aura One.

Hi, when I try to send epubs over a certain size (say, 100 MB) from Calibre on my Mac to my Kobo Aura One, I get an error popup (or whatever you call it) that they won't send. They open on my Mac, I'm using a direct USB cable, I have room galore on the device. Help! Thanks!

Marking a set of books based on unique identifiers

Based on a post from the FanFicFare thread: If I have a list of URLs/ISBNs/other identifiers, is there a way (either within Calibre or using a plugin) to drop them in and mark the associated books? :thanks:

Tattooed Lady #3

I finished her in time to photograph before the snow started on Monday. But then I got involved with my dyeing project and that was that for the day. And today too. It turned out to be a 2 day dyeing project. But now I have a year’s worth of new tattooed ladies, gentlemen, mermen, lumberjacks, etc, to work with and I am pretty excited about some of the new fabrics and colors! She has a silk ribbon sash at her waist with a big bow in the back.

Got an Onyx and everything worked fine. Then just recently any service from Google stopped working. So no more Google Translate, Gmail, Google Drive, Google ..., everything Google ain't working. Skin in the Game

Carnegie has just announced a collaboration with Italian brand Wood-Skin—authors of an exciting new proprietary process using advanced software and digital manufacturing to streamline the process of creating innovative surfacing materials. Essentially, the technology translates a digital file into a machined product—“tessellating the surface of a 3D model to generate its precise unfolded geometries onto sheets of rigid composite material.” A rough layman’s translation of this i...

TFB Review: Nexus Outdoors Camera Mount

Photographing or filming through your rifle scope is a bit of a challenge. You can try and freehand your camera or smartphone but with small eye boxes and eye relief of most scopes, this makes it very hard to capture a good image. It is almost like threading a needle that is 4-5 inches away. […] Read More … The post TFB Review: Nexus Outdoors Camera Mount appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Average rating for books in this category

A few questions: 1. does it count unrated books? The way that books_ratings_link is set up, I would guess not, but I wanted to check. 2. Is there any way to utilize them in a template? Calculating may be a problem though.

Kobo Libra H2O vs Pocketbook Inkpad 3 (PRO?)

There is a similar thread, but that person has quite different concerns. My priorities: good, reasonably big screen Mostly for reading, not watching cat videos. Battery life and format support is important. Will be used exclusively for DRM-free books. No interest "lending" books, online stores, cloud services. I'm a programmer, I can organize my data if you give me a chance. No phoning home. No tracking. hackable, and ability to install software language support a plus audio support is a plus Ph...

Chang-rae Lee talks new novel and the best Elton John song for karaoke

Chang-rae Lee’s sixth novel “My Year Abroad” explores America and globalization, risk and recklessness, class and wealth, sex and power, the desire for immortality and much more. The novel begins in America with Tiller, a college-age suburbanite, living with Val and Victor Jr, a woman and her young son, who are in witness protection. They’re an unlikely family but the rudderless Tiller is seeking to start over, with a new, more conscious life.  We flash back to when Tiller meets Pong Lou, a d...

Kindle Keyboard serial number

I’ve acquired a Kindle Keyboard with a dead battery that can’t be resuscitated. However, I didn’t want it as a reading device, only as one I could register so that I could download Kindle purchases for USB transfer. So my question is, if I pry it open, will the serial number be inside somewhere so I can register it with that? Or is this a non-starter in more than one sense?

Object of Desire: Rebekah Miles Floral Ceramic Table Lamp

Lamps can be tricky. They’re capable of imparting both light and character to a room, so it seems odd that so many available options feel so . . . sterile. Enter Rebekah Miles—a longtime Remodelista favorite and ceramic artist based in Ojai, California—and her hand-painted floral ceramic table lamps. Miles conceives of her ceramic pieces as “functional paintings,” and it’s easy to see how these lamp bases, at once practical yet evocative of the long-standing tradition of decorative pottery, will...

Self Defense Shooting Academy – A New Old Way of Training

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- When small businessman Roger Brooking set out to start his own firearms training company, there were a few challenges he was facing. 2020 was an unprecedented year for many reasons and one thing for sure is Americans are waking up to the reality that the 2 nd Amendment and gun ownership is important. Starting a company during the COVID 19 pandemic came with its own obvious and not so obvious issues. In an interview, Brooking said: I wanted to be able to put my talents ...

It stopped working while sitting turned off in my desk for some days. Is there something I could try to revi...

Screen issue with new Onyx Boox Poke 3

Hello everybody. I bought a Poke 3 and it arrived last Friday. I really like it and have everything working as I want. However, when I picked it up this morning I noticed that the screen is not working properly, making it unusable. It's difficult to describe, so here's a video. https://streamable.com/wlsjor Any ideas? It doesn't seem to be software caused, a restart didn't fix it. Neither did having it plugged in for hours. Thanks in advance.
