[Store Plugin] Standard Ebooks (Updated and Fixed)

bs2k had created a Store Plugin for Standard Ebooks here. However it had stopped working and was never added to the Index. I have fixed it (with their blessing) and v1.0.0 is fully working. Now you can search for all your high quality public domain ebooks and download them right from Calibre. Caturday

Holden had a pretty rambunctious morning, alternating between trying to ambush Huck from various hidey-holes in the hallway and trying to jump atop my desk in the office and solicit some attention from me. But even a two year old's batteries run down eventually and he was looking a little sleepy by the time I snapped this shot of him lazing on Bobbi's desk. Now he's in his little cube, dozing away. . Can't fix instapaper recipe

The instapaper built-in recipe won't give me more than the last 40 articles. I believe the problem could be that instapaper only puts 40 articles on each page at their site and the next ones are on subsequent pages. So I tried editing the built-in recipe. I made 2 changes: (1) I added more pages to the feeds area and (2) I increased the maximum articles up to 1000. But then when I hit save, I get the following error: "Invalid recipe" "Failed to compile the recipe with syntax error: 'tuple' ob...

More Human Than Human

I don't know how much of this is hyperbole and how much is actually yikes-worthy: It is not clear how far Chinese military researchers have gone. They are, however, advocating use of the CRISPR gene-editing tool to enhance human capabilities, and the Communist Party's Central Military Commission is "supporting research in human performance enhancement and 'new concept' biotechnology." I mean, maybe they just want people for an exciting new life in the off-world colonies? . [Author: Tam]

Retaking Paperwhite

I have a 10th Gen Kindle Paperwhite reader, and I'd like to re task it to do things like show my calendar, or maybe display the weather or home automation status. Has anyone reprogrammed (re flashed) the device so it is not a Amazon Kindle anymore but a general purpose display? I've seen something called Jailbreak, but I think that is not the same thing. Thanks, Mark.

What’s in a surname? The female artists lost to history because they got married

A new biography of the painter Isabel Rawsthorne highlights how talented women have often missed out on the recognition they deservedGenerations of female artists, composers and writers have been lost to history because their names changed after marriage. According to growing academic consensus, the conventional switch of surnames at the altar has erased a key cultural legacy. And the story of the painter and designer Isabel Rawsthorne, told in a new biography, is among the first to make this po...

Indesign-epub-kindle formatting problem: footnotes export with massive indent.

Hi there. I’m exporting a large file from InDesign to epub and when converted (any way) to kindle-friendly files it appears on all kindle devices with footnotes with vast and annoying indents. Seems to be a common problem, or one that other people on the interweb have had, but the solution — editing the css in Calibre — is beyond me. I can find the css file and footnotes ‘entry’, but it all looks totally normal. I’ve fiddled with parameters, but no dice. Always ends up the same. Can anyone help?

E-book conversion as a standalone project

Hello, I had an idea of extracting Calibre's excellent e-book conversion functionality into a standalone Python package so I could use it in another project. I did start to read the code and set up a development environment, but I got a little lost while trying to see what I could do to extract just the conversion pipeline. And when I set up a breakpoint in the ebook conversion CLI, it seemed to even have imported the PyQt libraries. So for someone more familiar with the codebase, do you think...

Does Gardening cure Coronavirus Misery?

Many years ago, we visited a garden and found box clippings all over a path from the gardener’s hedge cutting. We piled them into a carrier bag, took them home and I made them into cuttings. Which eventually made us our own hedges. Miles of them. (well almost) The ex box hedges in winter, now sadly all gone. In the photo just partly gone. Replaced with Osmanthus x burkwoodii, still, of course rather tiny. The Parterre is filled with ornamental grasses. Elsewhere in the garden there are still mo...

Why dwarf tomatoes will be a big deal at this year’s Tomatomania

Roving tomato sale Tomatomania will visit multiple Southern California locations this season, beginning with Roger’s Gardens in Corona Del Mar on Feb. 26. There will be fewer stops this year, but sale windows will run longer; and dwarf tomato varieties will get more of the spotlight. Tomatomania will run through at least April in venues in Highland Park, La Cañada Flintridge and Encino, among other locations. Tomatomania include more than 200 different tomato varieties for sale, some of which yo...

This Episcopal priest writes of grief and the death of her infant son in ‘The Night Lake’

In 2014, Liz Tichenor was a recently ordained Episcopal priest living in a cabin in a church camp on the shores of Lake Tahoe with her husband Jesse, a camp counselor, and their newborn son, Fritz. On Jan. 24, Fritz, who was just 40 days old, became severely distressed and wouldn’t stop crying. The doctor at the urgent care center examined the baby but couldn’t find anything wrong. Hours later, as his parents lay in bed with the infant, Fritz stopped breathing. Jesse, who taught cardiopulmonary ...

new feature 5.11 ctrl-click class behavior

I like the new feature of putting cursor on class name and ctrl-clicking to open stylesheet. When I use it, it opens stylesheet and lands on second instance. If clicked on class="w50" it opens stylesheet and lands not on .w50 but rather on .w75 I had been using Ctrl-t followed by typing in 'st' to open stylesheet quickly but this is just as handy. I was wondering what would happen if I clicked on a tag and nothing happened. That would be handy, too, to open the stylesheet this way and also to...

Book rating system by recommendations

Hi all. Can you please tell how I can make a rating system of books on recommendations. For example, I heard that Bill Gates recommended a book and Naval Ravicant recommended the same book. I add a Tag or something and give it, say, 5. Naval recommends the same book, so this book has a total of 10. Someone from the Internet - I give them a rating of 1. And the book begins to weigh 11. Can I do this on Calibre? Something like this

Falling in love with the plant specimens at California Botanic Garden in Claremont

Sometimes, it’s love at first sight. I am talking about close encounters with plants you have never seen before and then, suddenly, they make the whole world a much more inviting and compatible place. Just to know they exist makes your heart flutter. Take, for example, the Port Orford cedar. When you first lay eyes on it – as I recently did while strolling through the California Botanic Garden – you will not imagine that such a lush green specimen could possibly be a California native. Yet Calif...

faulty conversion of images

These are books that have DRM removed. I'm converting from epub to azw3 to add hyphenation. Any ideas how to fix it? Attached Thumbnails
