While we're on the topic of cats...

...have another photo of Huck. Shot with a Nikon D3000 at ISO 400, using maybe the most bang-for-the-buck Nikon DX lens, the 35mm f/1.8G. Fast enough that I can one-hand the little DSLR with my right hand and wiggle my left hand up in the air to give Huck something to gaze at dramatically. . [Author: Tam]

The 10 Best Biographies of American Presidents

In 2017, I embarked on a project of reading a biography of every American president. Forty-five men and over 25,000 pages later, I finally finished just before Joe Biden assumed the helm. It wasn’t an easy task, and certainly sometimes dull (especially through long parts of the 1800s), but always intriguing and unendingly fascinating.  As with all biographies, the books were full of life lessons. Though these presidents attained the highest office in the land, they also dealt with obstacles ...

Deadpool Valentine!

Ok, since Valentine's Day is coming up and I couldn't afford brand new valentines cards I decided to recycle one and make it a Deadpool one! This card was a valentine bought from CvS Pharmacy. But I drew Deadpool and carefully cut and pasted him on to this card. [Author: Kinhime Dragon]

No love for street trees

Especially not from utility companies. The image above was taken on a street on the east side of Buffalo, but this scene, or something similar, is common throughout the US, from Pasadena to Lexington to Aroostook. I’m lucky on my street, because our power lines are behind our houses and the tall shade trees on the street can grow unimpeded. That’s not the case in many other Buffalo neighborhoods, where, as you can see, large shade trees are chopped back without much attention to aesthetics. App...

White House Lawn Festooned with Valentine’s Day Hearts – Who Cares if they’re Corny?

In what her office called “The first lady’s surprise Valentine messages to the country, Valentine’s Day candies with messages of love and healing were installed overnight, surprising the President.   They talked with reporters, and C-SPAN got it on tape. “I just wanted some joy,” she told a reporter. “With the pandemic, just, everybody’s feeling a little down. So, it’s just a little joy. A little hope. That’s all.” Yard Snobbery at Slate On Slate, Heather Schwedel starts with acknowledging...

URGENT! Firearms Legislation Alert!

Was the headline clickbait-y enough? I'm not very good at clickbait, so I don't know. Anyway, this is an update on House Bill 1369, the constitutional carry bill which is still alive in the Indiana legislature. The deadline for the committee to vote on it is Tuesday, so put some pressure on your state legiscritters, fellow Hoosiers. This is our best chance in years, what with Brian Bosma gone. [Author: Tam]

Need to update plugins

I am very much behind the times with my DRM Removal Plugins. I have downloaded the newer ones but that's all so far. Currently I am using Calibre 4.0. Should I update my Calibre to the newest version before unzipping and activating the DRM plugins? I am so tired of not being able to convert my kindle books to epub so that I can again read on my forma.

Bad Paneling

Probably my least favorite recurring panelist on the Sunday Morning Political Talking Head Circuit is Claire McCaskill, who's a semifrequent round table participant on NBC's Meet the Press. What makes for a good panelist isn't a non-partisan viewpoint; after all, it's often their partisan viewpoint that they're selected for in the first place.  Rather, it's the ability to get meta...to talk about the politics behind the politics, as it were, that makes a quality professional kibitzer. It's tha...

window.load event: works in editor but not in viewer

I created a simple .epub page below using the calibre editor. In the calibre editor (ebook-edit) preview the code runs as I expect, with both text items appended to the tag. In atril document viewer the code runs as I expect. In the calibre viewer (ebook-viewer) the first event fires and the text is appended but the second does not seem to fire. I tried different formulations to catch the window.load event, but none worked. I need to use the window.load event because I need to wait for some ref...

At Home, at Work, and at the Shooting Range – More Self Defense Gun Stories

A Colorado school staffer receives individual instruction during FASTER training earlier this year. Photo by Complete Colorado U.S.A. – -(AmmoLand.com)- You probably didn’t see this news covered by the mainstream media, but again last week, responsible gun owners defended themselves and the people they love. Self-defense instructor Tony Simon joins the Self Defense Gun Stories Podcast to look at four new examples. Were these gun owners lucky, or were they prepared? (23-minute audio) document...

4.23 Metadata Plugin

Worked great long time and began hit and miss about 4 months ago and now 100% fail. Plugin info for Metadata Source shows: "Amazon.com (1.2.14) by Kovid Goyal. Downloads metadata and covers from Amazon." I suspect there are plugin updates since yet before Ca 5.0 but where and how to get them. I loaded 5.0 (5.1?) with fail so dropped back to 4,23 which is fine for my needs. I just download, convert and send to my tablet. Love Calibre but my bad failing to look into a major revision before updatin...

Kobo Libra H2O Release Cycle

Hello! This is my first post. It seems like you guys have a wonderful community :). TL;DR Edition: Given the history of Kobo's release cycles, is now a bad time to buy a Kobo Libra H2O? Unabridged Edition: I've been reading ebooks on 6" Kindles for the past 6-7 years. I own two at this point, an older base model and a newer Paperwhite. I'm interested in seeing the potential advantages of a 7" reader. The Libra H2O interests me for three reasons:I'd like to see what it's like to read on a 7" e-...

EPUB 3 calibre edited-polished metadata not recognized in app

Hi folks! I need advice on a problem I haven't been able to solve for a long time. I've got EPUB 2 as well as EPUB 3 (differs by publisher) files in my Calibre library. In there, I edit metadata, embed, polish x2, and save, then I use iTunes to drop the files to my iPad's Marvin 3 reader app. OK, now here's the problem: Once I finish editing metadata in Calibre and load the files in the Marvin app, nothing wrong with EPUB 2 metadata, but when it comes to EPUB 3... :( Marvin won't show the ...

Configure Remoter auto-sleep?

Hej all, another question for remoter users: my remoter seems to disconnect from the onyx after fairly short periods of idle time. Specifically, when I take longer to read a page (this is science, so I may ponder a page for 20 minutes easily), pressing the right arrow on the remoter will not advance the page but only trigger the onyx to make a sound - I'm assuming it is reconnecting with the device. A second press of the right arrow will then advance the page. This is suboptimal for me. Idea...

How Do I Export my Book Annotations to EverNote or to my computer?

Hello everyone. I am a new e-reader user, with a recently bought Boox Note2. I use EverNote for taking notes on the books I read, and have synced it with my Boox Note2. Now, after reading my first book on my e-reader and taking annotations, I would like to export those annotations to my EverNote account. I have heard that some people have exported annotations as a .txt file to their computer, which would work just as well for me because I could copy and paste those notes to an EverNote file. O...

Can daffodils kill you Can daffodils kill you! This is a great question and one which summons images of roaming Narcissi with the capability of murderous intent. Of course daffodils are not Triffids, which are themselves a only a figment of author John Wyndham's mind, and neither are they sentient in the way that humans imagine. However the question remains and as some say, there is no smoke without fire. Now most gardeners will probably tell you that Daffodils can't kill you, and the...

UI/UX design & requests for interviews

Hi all! I'm a UX student from Sweden. Starting February 22nd I will begin working on my master thesis, which I have chosen to be about Calibre. At the end of my project I should have produced an alternative GUI that delivers an improved UX, which any developer here that wants it could have as a foundation for future GUI development. While I'm only working on the graphical aspects and not writing any code, I still hope that me posting here in Development forums aren't out of place. If possible ...

Book Review | The Chocolatier by Jan Moran

The Amalfi Coast and chocolate … what a winning combination! I was in the mood for something fun and sweet to read this month leading up to Valentine’s Day, so I pulled The Chocolatier by Jan Moran off my bookshelf and enjoyed a long distance mini book club reading it together with my Mom. Released last year, it’s a story of love, passion, and the search for family – with a big dollop of intrigue along the way. Because the story evolves with the uncovering of many secrets, I will be very careful...

Libra H2O or Oasis

Hello guys, I'm new to the forum, I've been using the Kindle (8th gen) for more than 2 years now and I would like to upgrade to a new device. Was thinking about PW but then I found about about Kobo and Libra H2O which brings me to the dilemma from the subject. I've read more than a few discussions on benefits of both devices so I'll keep it short and ask you what would you choose if the price for Oasis is around 160 € (with the trade in and 20 % discount) and for Libra is 200 €? I can buy ...

California Already Introduces Three New Anti-Gun Bills

California’s General Assembly is back to pushing gun control. IMG NRA-ILA U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- The California Legislature has been back in full swing for nearly a month and legislation to place further restrictions on your already diminished rights in the Golden State continues to be filed. Here are a few of the bills so far: Assembly Bill 311  prohibits the display or sale of any “precursor firearm parts” at gun shows in the state. So-called “precursor” parts are not regulated as firearms ...

KOReader Calibre Search Adjustment

When I try KOReader Calibre Search to use tags or series metadata, the search button prompts the use of the internal memory as search drive/directory. However, my Calibre library is on a (card drive)\Calibre directory on my external SD card. How can I change that setting so it will search on my external SD card?
