Weather Report

How it started: How it's going: The first picture is a little after lunch time on Monday, and the second one is about noon on Tuesday. There was a fair bit of shoveling this morning, especially since I cleared the sidewalk as far as the front walks of the houses on either side. One of the neighbors across the street got out his snowthrower and cleared the walks on our block on both sides of the street a little after I was done, which was right neighborly of him. I need to leave a sixer on...

Evergreen Conspiracy

One of my favorite conspiracy theories has been the one where tens of thousands of (Warsaw Pact/United Nations/Communist Chinese) troops are (staged at hidden bases in our country/lurking just over the Mexican and Canadian borders) and about to take over our fair land. This meme comes with numerous subtropes, too! There's the one where the stickers on the back of roadsigns, hastily slapped there by DOT workers, are actually a secret code directing the invaders. Because foreigners drive on the ...

A fearless gardener shares some of her nonrules

Welcome guest Ranter Loree Bohl.  Do you know what I hate? Being told how I’m supposed to do something. Phrases like “that’s just how it’s done…” or “everybody does it that way” always  get my hackles up. Usually, the person giving the advice has nothing but the best intentions, but I still end up questioning why I should listen. Just because that’s how everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s how I want to do it.  I’m not “everyone” and neither are you. When perusing gardening books, magazines, or b...

TFB Review: B&T Industries Atlas Bipods and a Quick Guide to Attachments

Choosing the right bipod and having a perfect height set just before a stage is quite often the key to success in a competition. One bipod isn’t enough to do everything you’re likely to require from it over a few stages. Shooting practical rifle and precision rifle competitions (in my case mainly IPSC, PRS and […] Read More … The post TFB Review: B&T Industries Atlas Bipods and a Quick Guide to Attachments appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Open House Checklist

I was having coffee with Matt today and he was telling me about his work. He’s a real estate broker and appraiser with 30 years experience in the business, and has been working 10 hour days trying to keep up with his jobs and clients. An idea came to me…. I should pick his brain for all the things to check off when listing a home for sale and hosting an open house. So he came up with this list off the top of his head and I typed up a handy checklist for you or anyone who is planning on selling y...

Biden Breaks Silence on Guns, Demands ‘Common Sense Reforms’

Joe Biden used the anniversary of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., to press for extremist gun control U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Having waited about four weeks from the day he moved into the White House, Democrat Joe Biden used the Valentine’s Day anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Fla., to demand that Congress “enact commonsense gun law reforms,” which is camo-speak for extremist gun control. What he calls “common sense” is considered nonsense b...

PW3 Problem with PW3 after serial port mod

So, after having my old PW3 laying around unused for over a year now (bought the latest Oasis last year), I've decided to jailbreak it the hard way. Soldering the pins went relatively straightforward - the hardest part was removing the front plate of the device without ruining the glue strips. However since I've had the serial port wired up, for some reason the Kindle won't boot completely properly in regular mode. It starts up, but during the boot animation (the bar filling) the screensaver f...

Troubleshooting Kindle Oasis: killed by a KFX. Is that possible?

Well... after 3 years my beloved New Kindle Oasis is dead. And it seems that it was killed by a KFX that I sideloaded with the help of Calibre. It is stuck at the splash screen (boy reading under the tree) and none of the voodoos based on pressing the start button for any amount of seconds is working. It happened just after I sideloaded a KFX file (5 indeed...) and eject it using the Calibre's eject button. Is it possible to know for sure that a KFX file is by some way incompatible with a kind...

Sell Pocketbook Color 6"

I have decided to buy the Pocketbook Color 7.8" and am going to sell my 6" one. This one has given me great service as far as reading comics which is why I bought it. The new and installed System which came out a couple months ago actually seems to have improved the color ability quite a bit in that I have personally found it easier to adjust the various settings controls for different publications. I have not used it more than about twenty total hours so it is really very much the same as new. ...

Calibre: Can't Delete Books?

Hi hi! New here so I really hope I'm posting in the right place. :) I have a really old iPad Mini, the first generation if I'm not mistaken and I use a PC. So when iBooks was taken away from iTunes, I had to resort to using old versions of Calibre and iTunes to upload books on my iPad... That being said, the current version of Calibre that I use is Version 3.0 So yeah, superrrr old. Today I was adding new books to my iPad, as one does, and whilst trying to delete some books that I realise...

Native American comedy is explored in new book ‘We Had a Little Real Estate Problem’

There’s a joke that comedian Charlie Hill,  the first Native American to do comedy on network television, told on “The Tonight Show” in the 1970s: “I’m Oneida,” Hill said of his tribal affiliation. “My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.’ That punchline is now the title of Kliph Nesteroff’s book “We Had a Little Real Estate Problem,” published Feb. 16 from Simon & Schuster, exploring the history of Native Americans and comedy. Nesteroff ...

The “Kangaroo” Coat Hook from Mockett

Mockett’s CH46 “Kangaroo” Coat Hook is short on wall space but long on personality. Named for its exuberant expression (like a Kangaroo doing jumping jacks), CH46 is a fun and utilitarian item that transforms the smallest bit of wall into neat storage for coats, hats, purses, and other personal accouterments. Whether working at home (where space is at a premium) or back in the office, it’s crucial to stay clean and tidy—Mockett’s Kangaroo coat hook helps you do just that. ...

I accidentally opened my library in an older version.

I mistakenly opened calibre.exe instead of calibre-portable.exe of 3.48, and it read from the appdata folder instead of the portable settings. It tried to load my library, but stalled on a white screen and I had to kill the process. Nothing seems amiss when I re-opened the library in 5.xx, and there's no errors when I use Check Library. Is there anything else I should do?

Guest bath toiletries and first aid kit

When we have guests in our home, we like them to feel as welcome as possible, whether they are visiting for a week or just an afternoon. We never want our guests to be uncomfortable or embarrassed because they forgot to bring a toiletry or need some first aid supplies. So when I did my spa-style guest bathroom makeover, I made a point to include a guest toiletries kit that was subtle, functional, and thoughtful. I started with a couple of KUGGIS storage bins from IKEA because they were the p...

Book: The 80/80 Marriage

I haven’t been posting about my reading lately. While , I think I was a little tired of writing book reports, but that has passed. Last night I read The 80/80 Marriage: A New Model for a Happier, Stronger Relationship. Kaley and Nate Klemp have written an excellent book that can help any married couple improve their relationship. This is especially true in the time of Covid, given all the additional dynamics about being home together most of the time. When Amy and I wrote Startup Life: Su...
