American Gardens: Didn’t love the series and the book is worse

It’s a complete miss and it’s sad. Anyone who opens American Gardens—the book that accompanies Monty Don’s BBC TV series by the same name—expecting to be wowed by spectacular photography and glowing prose about Yankee gardening prowess needs to lower his or her expectations. Hard. Keep in mind that Don is a beloved garden presenter whose Gardener’s World is wonderfully personal and specific and that his other books are, rightly, very highly regarded. Unfortunately, this book suffers from the sa...

How To Turn Your Crafting Into A Full Time Career

Having a creative hobby is healthy in so many ways. It relieves stress, helps keep your mind sharp and can help you pass the time without sitting in front of a TV. As you craft more often, you also get very good at it. You may have been noticing that your crafts look as good as anything that you see for sale in stores or online.  Which should make you think. Maybe your seasonal craft projects could be sold and make you some extra Christmas money. Or, if you have a lot of people asking a...

Porch + Patio Privacy Fence Ideas

Finally I have my hands on a renovation project! This is a 1200 square foot 2 bedroom 2 bath duplex with a small patio, in need of a top to bottom makeover. I’ll share more “before” pictures in the weeks to come as I tackle these spaces. Here’s a peek at the rear patio where I’ll be building a privacy fence to enclose this open space and create an outdoor room. There are neighbors on three sides, so a privacy fence makes perfect sense.   My plan is to build one, but I need to submit plans to th...

'Everyone knew him': San Francisco honors literary hero Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The co-founder of the City Lights Bookstore had global stature but remained a neighborhood fixtureBy 2pm, a small memorial of flowers and a can of Pabst had begun to accumulate outside the door of City Lights Books, to commemorate the death of its co-founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti.A vigil, unaffiliated with City Lights, will take place at 7pm tonight in the adjacent Jack Kerouac Alley. That tiny side street separates the bookstore – a tourist attraction and official city landmark for decades – fr...

Lawrence Ferlinghetti obituary

Poet whose outlook spanned anarchism, ecology and small business, as founder of the City Lights Bookstore in San FranciscoLawrence Ferlinghetti, poet, artist, activist and founder of San Francisco’s famous City Lights Bookstore, who has died aged 101 of interstitial lung disease, was the least “beat” of the Beat Generation. In addition to a political commitment that blended anarchism and ecology – he loathed the motor car, calling it “the infernal combustion engine” – he had an instinctive busin...

Fell through the ice while skating, Voyage green LED stuck on

Hi all- I fell through the ice while skating along some sketchy barely frozen canals, and my Voyage got a bit damp. I took it apart and cleaned the contacts (these are pre-cleaning pics), now those spots are clean. Is there a charging circuit / chip which I should be focussing my attention on ? It works, but the battery level drops about 10% per day now if I don't read at all. Attached Thumbnails

Chase Away the Gray

It may be dreary in the London borough of Hackney, but House of Hackney is forecasting sunny skies with a collection of floral fabrics that imagine worlds of wondrous vegetation—a fantasia of beauteous blooms and inspired imagination. Flora Fantasia is a good place to start. This vivid print teems with detailed life: verdant, otherworldly forms that pay homage to a book of fantasy flowers from the 1880s. Hortensia is more restrained and orderly—more British, if you will—yet non...

Touch Kobo Touch Setup Issues

Hello! I'm new here (first post) so please bear with me, I'm not very well-read on the technology. I have a Kobo Touch (the original I believe) that I got back in maybe 2011. It got lost in the shuffle of my life and I recently found it again, powered it up, and thought "okay great, it still works!" Last update at the time was 2013, but all the books on it were still loading, it seemed to connect to the Internet (I had access to the Kobo store and the browser) but it would not allow me to updat...

is this really DRM?

Hi! AFAIK DRM locks your purchased e-book to your device (described for example here: https://mybookcave.com/what-is-ebook...it-affect-you/) and anything else is called DRM-free. But I am currently corresponding with a publisher who claims their e-books are DRM-protected and explains it like this: "the user id is integrated into the book, the user can copy the e-book from device to device". I am puzzled. To me this sounds more like DRM-free. Any opinions, pls? Thx in advance! :) PH

PW3 Serial jailbreak on 5.13.4?

Hey all, I've successfully run the jb.sh script on my PW3 after disabling the root password via serial. It said "*jailbreak*" at the bottom of the screen and everything. From here however, I have been unable to run any of the KUAL/mrpi/you name it installers in any form that I've found. The ";log mrpi" search trick does nothing, any updates I drop into /mnt/us get deleted on volume eject... Is there no way to move forward with the jailbreak on this firmware? It seems so strange that I have full...

Sleek Hardware from Starchitect David Adjaye, Courtesy of Izé

Above: David Adjave, photo via Izé. Most of us will never live in a house designed by David Adjaye, the celebrated London-based architect, but one could add a touch of his aesthetic with his hardware line for Izé: “Adjaye has worked closely with us to create a series of products that take familiar forms and subvert them,” the Izé founders say, “from the ubiquitous language of bent and welded tube to the angular wedge knob.” Here’s a look: Above: The Bathroom Turn in brass (also available in ot...
