Good eReader for reading books that have photos?

How is eReader performance with pictures nowadays? Can someone suggest one (or more) eReaders that are decent? I ask because my Nook Glowlight (2013 model) is awwwful. My biggest complaint is that on ePub books, pictures are shown inline and I cannot interact with them to make them larger at all. No zoom at all, as best as I can tell... So, if I have a book with diagrams or maps, I'm SOL. They are little tiny shmears (it's a relatively low resolution screen, at 212 DPI). I don't want an actual ...

It always closes the backlight first and then takes about 2 sec to get to the screensavers. I wonder if some of the modifications I made caused it, so I want to give it a fresh start. Kindle PDF Cover Disappearing

Hey all, I have searched this at length and have not found an answer to my issue, so please direct me to the thread if an answer exists. The issue is that PDF files are not showing the cover assigned to them from Calibre 5.13.0 to the Kindle Oasis 3rd gen. I am aware of the cover destruction that happens with azw3 and mobi files, which is corrected after the Kindle is disconnected and reconnected to Calibre. However, this issue is not resolved with that method. I have also tried adjusting t...

Inspector Banks author Peter Robinson talks ‘Not Dark Yet’ and writing in the pandemic

The British police detective has long been a popular figure in the crime genre, with characters often crossing over from the page to the TV screen. Holding his own in that lineup is Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, whose creator, Peter Robinson, recently published the sleuth’s 27th outing, “Not Dark Yet” (William Morrow, $29). This time, Banks and his Yorkshire team of investigators are handling three cases simultaneously, all of which may turn out to be related. The DCI Banks series has be...

ereader for library?

I'm thinking about giving an ereader as a present. The receiver has no compUter, no WiFi, and tech adverse. She would most likely only be using It for her library. This is for the U.S. I can train her, but I don't want to be constantly supporting her. I am going to ask her if she would actually use it. Since she doesn't have a computer (Or phone or tablet), I think a Kindle is out. So I'm down to a Kobo. So would she be able to use a Kobo without a secondary device. Can you do every...

PDF Reader with CC on Kindle Fire?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum. I'm new in town and wasn't sure where it would fit. I'm currently using Calibre Companion v5.4.4.19 on a Kindle Fire HD 8 (10th Gen) and I've only found one PDF app (PDF Reader) designed for the Kindle. The problem is that trying to open a PDF file from within CC doesn't actually open the PDF. The screen flickers momentarily when the PDF tries to launch, which may be the PDF Reader trying to work, but the app doesn't actually open regardless of whether ...

What every gardener should know about daffodils, society garlic and ginger lilies

The famous trumpeting, cupped receptacle on daffodils is called a corona, and botanists are confounded as to its function. However, the presence of the corona does assist us in explaining why daffodil flowers nod as opposed to staying upright. Were the cupped corona to face the sky, rainwater would collect in it, causing the pollen on the anthers inside of it to rot, preventing pollination and seed formation from taking place. It is worth noting that daffodil species that bloom in the fall have ...

From epub to mobi (problem with double cover)

What can I do to avoid having 2 covers in my mobi file (for my Kindle Oasis) with an epub (where I start from) with 1 cover only? Thanks
Tags: Books, Conversion

Search in Calibre

Suggestion: One thing that I am missing viewing epubs is context search. Simplest requirement is this: search for word1, in results search for word2 in window not greater than say 10 words. Ex: I search for amnesia, and get 50 entries. I want to find one which is close to the word "future". To words rather close to each other is all I remember. As far as I know there is no viewer that will let me do this kind of search, and I need it quite often. Regards, Wlodek

Years after the killing of her cousin, a TV veteran digs into her family’s complex history

When Elle Johnson was 16, her 16-year-old cousin, Karen, was shot and killed while working at a Burger King. The event understandably scarred Johnson, and it helped shape her work as a writer and producer on shows like “CSI: Miami,” “Law & Order” and “Bosch.” But equally influential in her life and her work was her domineering father, a strict New York City parole officer who Johnson came to feel raised her and her sister as if they were parolees themselves. Johnson, who has used fragments...

Remove Delete Button from Server browser interface? How?

I just ran my first test of the Calibre Server. Am I impressed! That is amazing! Worked perfectly. However, I was also able to delete a book from my library with the delete button in the browser interface! Yikes. I have created some family history E-books, and was going to share those books to extended family through Calibre Server... so I would want to remove that button. How can I modify that browser interface? or set up a read-only user account? Alternatively, I will just E-mail the book...

Custom CSS for TXT -> EPUB conversion

Hi there. I'm working with numerous documents which, for ease of mass-editing, I'd like to keep in .TXT format. I have no problems converting them to EPUB format. Everything seems fine. HOWEVER I'd like to modify (or even replace) the default CSS that gets embedded into the .EPUB. When I use epub-convert with the --extra-css "blah.css", the contents are added to the "contents.xhtml" in a style block, but no-where else! Is it possible to embed contents into the "stylesheet.css", or add a new...

Single library, multiple storages

Hi all! First of all, my excuses for not having logged in for nearly four years  I have a question whose reply is probably "you can't" but I wanted to try nonetheless. I would love to have my current ebook library split in more than one location, and I know I can have separate libraries, or even virtual libraries, but that doesn't cover my needs. What I would need is having, like I have now, a single library, with all my ebooks listed together, but having the books themselves split...

Kintsugi helped me to understand my brother's death

The Japanese artform, based on a belief that a repaired pot can be stronger, taught me about tragedy and the ability to overcome itMy brother died at the age of 10, when I was eight. When I was nine, I shushed my best friend for mentioning him. At 11, I forced myself to stop turning my head away when we drove past a cemetery. And at 16 I spoke his name aloud for the first time, although it was many more years before I could actually talk about him.“The world breaks everyone and afterward many ar...

Weekend Cooking: Sparkling Wine Anytime by Katherine Cole

I have a super-fun and informative book to share today. Katherine Cole's newest wine book is called Sparkling Wine Anytime: The Best Bottles to Pop for Every Occasion. It was published by Abrams last month, and I received a review copy because I'm a member of the Abrams Dinner Party. What's a wedding, New Year's Eve, or a red-carpet event without a few bottles of the bubbly? When we hear the word bubbly, most of us immediately think of Champagne, but did you know sparkling wine is made all over...

What Hillary Gets Wrong in Her Gun Control Push – Again

By Larry Keane Gun-grabbers like Hillary Clinton, just can’t help themselves apparently. IMG iStock 1195632653 U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Hillary Clinton just can’t help herself. Never mind that her tone-deaf demand for gun control caused gun owners to come out in record numbers to deny her an all-but-assured White House victory in 2016. She’s doubling down. Five years on, she’s still spitting vitriol on Americans. She still wants to punish freedom-loving Americans instead of criminals. She’s ...

The Turing test is not about AI: it is about our tendency to project humanity onto things

As Artificial Intelligence technologies enter into more and more facets of our everyday life, we are growing accustomed to the idea of machines talking directly to us. Voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri inhabit domestic and professional environments, chatbots are standard in customer care, apps such as Replika offer virtual avatars to provide companionship, and even the Twitter account of NASA’s Perseverance mission sends updates in first person, as though they were posted ...
