Kindle reader orientation

I have an Amazon Fire 7 tablet with the Kindle reader app. All other readers I've used either defaulted to vertical (book) orientation, or could be set that way. But I can't see how to do it with the Kindle app. Whenever I tilt it above 45 degrees, it switches to landscape mode. Very annoying. Is there a hidden setting? All I can do is go into the tablet settings and turn off Auto Rotate, but that affects everything on the tablet, like the browser, which I prefer in landscape mode.

Harry Potter Glasses Case Revamped

When I was little I had glasses, I got some pink Harry Potter themed glasses and a special case that looked like a book, when that one wore out we got another case just like it and that was shortly after they were discontinued. I recently had to get glasses again and I still had my old case. It was so faded you could not tell it was a Harry Potter collectible. So I decided that because it's not gonna be high in value/not even close to "mint condition" So I decided to upcycle it and make it look ...

A Crowded Calendar?

After a year of having a blank slate of a calendar, I find that appointments and other things are elbowing their way in. And I'm surprised that it's seeming a tad stressful. What, a mammogram, book club, and grocery shopping all on the same day? No way. Change that mammo appointment. Yesterday seemed a bit harried--I had to go over to Mars Hill to return a recorder I'd borrowed, stop at Silvers Mill to inquire about next week's shipment of chicks, pick up a few things at the grocery...

Pasta alla Pancetta, 'shrooms, and Ramps

My  little ramp patch is putting forth so I harvested a very few leaves. I'd love to use the bulbs too--but then there'd be fewer ramps next year. When I find fresh ramps for sale, I buy them and eat a few and plant the rest--which is why I have a ramp patch in the first place. Someday someone may be able to harvest more freely here . . . But not yet. I'd like to see them all crowded before I remove any. So just a few leaves went into last night's supper. I sautéed diced pa...

It doesn't work like that.

So, some dude on the gunternet made the claim that he could draw a .22WMR NAA Mini from his pocket and put all five rounds into a playing card sized target at five feet in less than two seconds, strong hand only. Pardon my bluntness, but that claim is simply bullshit and is the sort of gun forum nonsense spouted by people who wouldn't know what button to push on a timer to make it go "beep" in the first place. A fast pocket draw to a relatively wide-open target like a USPSA A-zone or the ID...

What she said...

" Whatever else their motives -- mental imbalance, loathing some person or group, wanting to begin war between sexes, races or religions, and so on -- all of these shooters give a credible impression of seeking attention. Of desiring posthumous fame. One strikes and is a three-day sensation in the news online and over the air, and others follow, time and again.   We've got to stop making these horrible losers famous. Whatever else we do -- and there's a long list of suggestions, from "ban...

Automotif CCX...

When Alfa Romeo sold their Alfetta 2000 here, they worried that the "Alfetta" name wouldn'd translate well to the American market, so it was called the Alfa Romeo Sport Sedan for the US market. A forty-odd year old Alfa moving under its own power on a public road in the Midwest is the opposite of common. . [Author: Tam]

Weeding and mulching are satisfying, but we need ground covers to eliminate those chores

The Goal is Super-Low-Maintenance Here’s a 21 by 11-foot island bed around the entrance sign to my co-op community.  It’s very prominent and as of yesterday morning, half-full of weeds. And here it is after two hours of weeding and mulching – by me, because I’ve added this island to my growing domain of adopted gardens in public spaces around town. Is there anything as immediately satisfying as this act of garden maintenance? Okay, maybe lawn-mowing; I haven’t had a lawn in years, but I remembe...

Rock ‘N’ Roses Crop Top

While crochet hacking is about thinking of new ways to remake existing clothes, it’s also about mending. This tee had a hair dye incident and got a big bleached patch on the bottom at the back. Having had it for a long time I was loathe to get rid of it so I chopped off the bleached bit and revamped the neckline so that it can have a whole new life. I used a DK cotton but you can use any yarn you like. A DK weight is better for this kind of transformation as it isn’t too bulky. STITCHES CROCHE...

On the Visual Thesaurus: The Hidden History of Coined Words

For the Visual Thesaurus this month, I reviewed a new book by Ralph Keyes, The Hidden History of Coined Words. (The publisher, Oxford University Press, sent me a review copy.) I’ve been known to coin a few words myself, for business (as a name developer) and pleasure (as a lover of playful language). So it was a delight to discover the stories behind some famous madeupical words—googol, snark, discombobulate, robotics—and some not-so-famous duds.   Full access to the column is restricte...

Mandatory Firearms Training for a Constitutional Right!? ~ VIDEO

Mandatory Firearms Training for a Constitutional Right!? ~ VIDEO Texas – -(AmmoLand.com)- The constitutional carry vote in Texas has ignited a conversation about the possible value of government-mandating firearms training in the gun community. While most gun rights advocates would be in lockstep agreement that mandatory training to exercise any gun right is an unconstitutional infringement, many gun owners and even some professional instructors feel that the benefits of mandatory training ou...

"class="calibre"" in the

I've recently noticed that when converting from .odt to epub, I'm getting the following at the top of each html file: Code: I don't know exactly when I first noticed this; I'm now on 5.16 (Ubuntu 20.04) and it's still there. Can someone tell me if a class code actually belongs there? Or is this a bug? Thanks!

Series Groupings on Paperwhite Home Screen

I have my Kindle organized with collections of books I have read and may want to re-read some day. The unread books are all on the home screen pages. However now, Kindle has come up with their own series grouping and that is outside of my collections and on the home screen making me think these are unread books. To compound matters, the series groups on the home screen contain read books classified in collections and unclassified unread books. What a colossal mess! I want to get RID of ...

Watts’ Tweet Reveals Racist, Sexist Motivation to ‘Replace’ White Men

Shannon Watts revels in the thought of having “white gun extremists … replaced” and of passing citizen disarmament edicts through fear, and then expects gun owners she contemptuously calls “buffoons” to surrender their firearms? (Moms Demand Action/Facebook) U.S.A. – -(Ammoland.com)- “This is the last gasp of white gun extremists losing power and you’ll all soon to be replaced by women and people of color who will ensure you’re spotlighted in history books as the buffoons you are. POTD: Memorial – Heckler & Koch HK416 in France

We just passed the Heckler & Koch HK416 appreciation day: April 16. To compensate we have a Photo Of The Day with pictures from the French 35e régiment d’infanterie. I have lived a few years in France, but unfortunately, my French is too weak (without red wine) to make professional translations. My understanding is that […] Read More … The post POTD: Memorial – Heckler & Koch HK416 in France appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

A look at the midnight ride of Paul Revere on April 18-19

Poetic license Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” (see below) is based on historic events, but it is more of a tale and not a historical account. Longfellow wrote the poem after taking a tour of Boston in 1860. He was a pacifist and abolitionist who wrote the poem to try and unify a divided nation on course for the Civil War. Historians have dissected the poem since 1860 and compared it to Revere’s account of the ride in his own words and other historic evidence. The National...

Add back books from prior Calibre installation

The forum software just blew away my first attempt at this post; hopefully, this one will go through. We bought a new computer, installed the current version of Calibre, selected a folder to use for our Calibre books, and copied all the book files from the old computer into the new folder on the new computer. But none of the old books shows up in Calibre. We tried adding a book. Calibre led us inside the book's folder (which is as created by Calibre on the old system), so we added the epub and...

Brevard County Sheriff Calls Out Anti-Second Amendment Extremists ~ VIDEO

Florida – -(AmmoLand.com)- Second Amendment supporters will recall that in the wake of the Parkland school shooting in 2018, then-Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel immediately moved to blame the NRA, all the while covering up how his office botched numerous calls involving the shooter. The “Cowards of Broward” were rightly derided then, and AmmoLand News even called out then-gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum for defending them. So, the comments by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey are a...
