Double Daffodil Yellow Trillium Mayapple Columbine   [Author: Vicki Lane]

At least 15 years ago, I was growing tons of Japanese maples from seed. I had a little nursery setup in the backyard. I was a madman, but I learned a lot. Top among the things I learned was that there is no such thing as a bad Japanese maple. All kinds of leaf colors, shapes, forms. It was a rewarding experience, and I was happy to give away many beautiful small trees to friends and family. Of hundreds, I only wound up keeping two, which I planted in containers. These plants have become for me s...

Josie Paints

Meema and I did some painting Wednesday. I did Medusa with her snake hair. I held my brush lightly and did not press down hard.  I drew the Cyclops with one eye. And then I started drawing A's. I was very good at it. Oh my gosh! I was so good I just couldn't stop. I made 23 A's and one L. I think that writing is going to be fun.   [Author: Vicki Lane]

Ugh, the internet.

"Why didn't he fire a warning shot?" Okay, first, because even warning shots land someplace. Whose living room would you like it to land in? Second, because she was in the middle of stabbing someone, so there wasn't a lot of time for warning people. "Why didn't he shoot her in the leg?" Oh, man, when are we going to rid people of the damfool notion that it's possible to shoot someone a little bit? A bullet in the knee can leave someone crippled for life, possibly resulting in amputation....

Fifty Cheers for Garden Rant!

A book is commissioned. (not mine)   I was recently talking with a friend who has just been commissioned to write a book about a specific genus of plants. He and/or his commissioning editor had had the idea that he might add a section at the end with comments from other people about – this specific genus of plants. Rather like, I imagined, I had done at the end of Deckchair Gardener, where I asked friends to write what their best garden mistakes had been. I think the best of these was possib...

Wow’d by Orange Tulips in the Smithsonian’s Ripley Garden

This week I cycled around downtown Washington and stopped to see my favorite garden there – the Smithsonian’s Ripley Garden, created and maintained by Janet Draper. (Janet’s profiled and mentioned several times here on the  Rant.) There I was gobsmacked and inspired by Janet’s use of orange tulips, which she wrote to tell me are ‘Strong Gold,’ the double ‘Orca,’ and lily-flowered ‘Moonblush’. She then paired them with mustard ‘Red Giant,’ pansies, parsley and cherianthus. Wowzer! They’re at the...

Everything Old is New Again...

...or, "There is nothing new under the sun." (Although the opinions seen as publishable in The Atlantic have definitely swung a hundred and eighty degrees.) From June of 1896:  "But it is not alone that the presumption regarding the immigrant of today is so widely different from that which existed regarding the immigrant of thirty or fifty years ago. The immigrant of the former time came almost exclusively from western and northern Europe. We have now tapped great reservoirs of population then...

Automotif CCXI...

Oh, hey, look! It's the new (G42 series) BMW M440i! Hey, that's a pretty slick-looking ride from the side... Let's walk around to the front of the car and see what's shakin' up there... EWW! It looks, to steal a line from my friend TC, like a Mustang had sex with a naked mole rat. That, or some sort of angry cyborg attack beaver. That snout is going to take some getting used to, not gonna lie. I realize that, thanks to Audi and Lexus, great gaping maws of grille up front are the style of...

Sako Carbon Wolf Long Term Review

Sako Carbon Wolf Review At SHOT 2018, I was having a blast looking through the Tikka/Sako wares.  The most eye-catching of these to me was their new (at the time) Sako 85 Carbon Wolf sporting a striking adjustable RTM carbon fiber “soft touch” coated stock, as well as a fluted and threaded barrel. Check out these spring book releases about birds, gardening and the outdoors

By JULIA RUBIN The new season of spring shows has begun, and viewership is way up by all accounts. We’re not talking about screens, which we’ve all been glued to during the pandemic. Less noticed is another trend: people tuning in to nature for quieter, real-life, high-stakes drama. From new Audubon field guides, updated for the first time in decades, to a book of poetry about insects, publishers are trying to meet this moment: Not only is public engagement with nature high, but so is concern ov...

Holosun HS507C-X2-ACSS Mini – The Ideal First Pistol Optic ~VIDEO

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- Initially, I wasn’t the biggest fan of pistol optics like the Holosun HS507C when they first came out. I have too many hours of muscle memory behind iron sights, and finding the reticle on these sights often slowed me down. To be completely honest, I outright dismissed them as a fad after spending just a few minutes behind a Glock with an RMR attached. I found, like many other shooters with a ton of experience behind iron sights, that every time I raised the gun up I’d...

Merwin Hulbert First Model Frontier Army Revolver – VIDEO

USA – -(Ammoland.com)- Made for just two years (1876-1878), the Merwin Hulbert First Model Frontier Army Single Action Revolver is an interesting gun for a variety of reasons. First off, Merwin Hulbert didn’t actually make the guns; they just designed and marketed them out of New York City. In fact, they also marketed guns by Colt, Winchester, Marlin, Remington, Ballard, L.C. Smith, Parker, Ithaca, W.W. Greener, Westley Richards, and Manton.
