Tool Fixated

When rolling around in a force-on-force scuffle in a class like ECQC, you can sometimes see people get "tool fixated". You will see, for instance, someone get completely fixated on the task of clearing a malfunction in a Simunitions Glock that choked when they tried firing it with the other person's hand around the slide, or perhaps obsessively trying to wrench a Sims gun away from their opponent. While they're doing this, they lose awareness of the entirety of the situation and their opponent is...

The Best Apple Pencil Alternatives

Wacom, Logitech If you own a new iPad, then you’re probably familiar with the Apple Pencil. It’s the ultimate stylus for writing notes and creating digital art. Thing is, the Pencil is pretty pricey. Don’t worry, there are plenty of great alternatives. As soon as the Apple Pencil hit the market, it raised the standard for all tablet styluses. It’s sleek, easy to use, and it’s built for both casual note takers and professional digital artists. But with a $90 to $130 price tag—for the first ...

AmmoLand News Is Launching A Guide To Internet Privacy & Safety for U.S. Readers

Opinion AmmoLand News Is Launching A Guide To Internet Privacy & Safety for U.S. Readers U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- People on the internet think they are anonymous. The scary truth is that no one on the internet is truly anonymous. Companies like Google and Facebook log every site you visit and everything you buy online. What you do on the Internet lives on forever in someone's database. Companies across the web build profiles of internet users to be able to target them with advertisements. I...

How to Close the macOS Terminal Automatically When a Process Exits

If you’re a fan of shell scripts in macOS, you’ve probably noticed how running one will leave you with a useless Terminal window after it’s completed. You can fix this from the Terminal settings. This method only works if you’re launching a shell script outside of bash, such as by clicking on it in Finder or by setting a custom hotkey to open the program. Otherwise, you’ll just be taken back to the command prompt. You can always use killall Terminal to make the Terminal app close itself from wi...

At least in Green Book, jazz is high art

I’m anxiously awaiting the release of Bolden, a film about the New Orleans cornettist Buddy Bolden (1888 – 1933) who may actually have invented jazz. But since Bolden will not be released until May, and since April is Jazz Appreciation Month, now is a good time to talk about the cultural capital that jazz has recently acquired, at least in that multiply honored film, Green Book. As is often the case when a film is honored lavishly, however, Green Book has run up against a backlash. If nothing el...

Kindle update - Read/Unread

I sat down for some reading this a.m. with my Voyage and was greeted with an announcement about an addition to my Kindle as well as NO BOOKS!! Amazon has added a feature to have read and unread books sorted so that you can choose to blank out all your unread books. After fiddling a bit, I fixed it so my books showed up, but it will take some time to get the read and unread sorted out (I have over 1000 books in the cloud). Side loaded books also get the same treatment at least if they are azw3. ...

Find Your Decluttering Style and Make It Work For You

The following is a guest post about finding your decluttering style from regular contributor, Kristin at The Gold Project. Spring is officially in the air, or it is where I live in the south. After a long and gloomy winter, some sunshine and warmer days always help my mood. And, it always puts me in the decluttering mood. Does anyone else get the decluttering bug when the weather turns nicer? It is almost like I want to feel lighter and owning less helps with that goal. You might think I...

9 Tips for Preparing a Fabulous Flower Bed

Have you ever ended up with a bed of dead flowers, mountains of mulch and a whopping garden center receipt? Let's do something about that, shall we? Get your gardening groove back with these nine tips. 1. Start with a clean slate There are two kinds of flower beds: those that have been well-prepared and those that are covered in weeds. Give your unplanted bed the once-over. Does it get enough sunlight? Does water tend to collect there? Have you removed all weeds, roots and rocks so your plants...

When Can Headphones and Earbuds Damage Your Hearing?

Gang Liu/Shutterstock Conversations about headphone-induced hearing loss have faded away, but headphones and earbuds still post a serious risk to your ears. How loud is too loud, and how do you protect your ears without giving up music? The Threshold for Hearing Damage is 85 dB Most doctors agree that 85 dB is the threshold for hearing damage. After repeated long term exposure to sounds at or above 85 dB, you can expect to experience some hearing loss or tinnitus. And while you’d probabl...

Weekend Cooking: Great Recipes from Eating Well

I love it when one of my food magazines is so good I want to cook my way through the issue from cover to cover. is just such a winner. So much about this issue says spring, especially in its use of radishes and peas, which are some of the earliest garden veggies (though it's still too cold here for gardening). I made three recipes from the magazine this week and marked a bunch more to try. All of the recipes I mention here can be found on the Eating Well website (follow the links), but I sha...

Should You Still Buy a Guidebook for Europe? Yes.

I’ll be the first to point out this irony: I started EuroCheapo, a budget travel website, back in 2001, and yet I still love traveling around Europe with a guidebook. Furthermore, I’m conveying this information to you — on a website. Ironies aside, I believe that when it comes to trip guidance, there’s room for everything. Websites, like the one you’re reading right now, are a fabulous platform for trip planning. You can “get educated” about the logistics, find the best deals (especially for hot...

Warning Stupid Ahead: Don’t Get Your Gun Advice from The New York Times

Opinion Warning Stupid Ahead: Don't Get Your Gun Advice from The New York Times Ft Collins, CO –-(Ammoland.com)- “Two things are ‘infinite:’ the Universe, and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the Universe.” ~ Albert Einstein Several decades ago, media liberals (an absurd redundancy) fervently lobbied for a federal ban on “Saturday-Night Special” handguns. SNSs (Saturday night specials)were ambiguously described as “cheap, small, and underpowered,” and those aspects made them “bad,” so...

Alison met Alexander Wilson (played by...

Update WinRAR Now to Protect Your PC From Attacks

Do you have WinRAR installed on your Windows PC? Then you’re probably vulnerable to attack. RARLab patched a dangerous security bug at the end of February 2019, but WinRAR doesn’t automatically update itself. Most WinRAR installations are still vulnerable. What’s the Danger? WinRAR contains a flaw that would let a .RAR file you download automatically extract an .exe file to your Startup folder. That .exe file would automatically be started the next time you sign into your PC, and it could inf...

Lake House: Winter Work and Spring Plans

Remember how I was on a cabinet building kick a few months ago? My energy level–and that magical ability to knock together a cabinet on a whim using nothing but some scrap wood and a bottle of wine–came to an abrupt halt at the end of January, because that’s the infuriating thing that happens when it’s legitimately negative forty degrees out. I mean… that sucked. I wasn’t completely ready to give up on cabinets though, so over the last couple of months I have very slowly pieced together a coup...
