Onyx Boox Note Pro! (First Impressions)

First off, https://ereader.store/en/ was fantastic. I pre-ordered the device last month and it shipped on the advertised day of availability (Monday). It arrived within 24 hours from GERMANY (I'm on the US East Coast) in perfect condition. I'm very happy with my experience. The device is very nice...its just an incremental upgrade from the Note Plus but I like the improvements. If you have the two devices side-by-side you will notice the barely-perceptible extra layer for the front light....

On sluts and slatterns

Here is another attack on sl-words, a continuation of the one celebrated last week (“The sl-morass”). There, I mentioned the fact that a word beginning with sl– tends to develop negative connotations. My example was Engl. slim, as opposed to German schlimm “bad.” Another example (one of many!) is slight. In the Old Germanic languages, including Gothic, which was recorded in the fourth century, the word meant “smooth,” perhaps “slippery.” (Incidentally, to slip is also a verb of questionable ante...

New Zealand Mass Murderer’s Primary Goals: Gun Control in the United States

Opinion New Zealand Mass Murderer's Primary Goals: Gun Control in the United States Arizona -(Ammoland.com)- -The mass murderer in New Zealand was not an ordinary active shooter. He is a political terrorist who is working to advance a political agenda. One of his primary goals is to further gun control in the United States. His manifesto clearly states that goal. From The Great Replacement: Finally, to create conflict between the two ideologies within the United States on the ownership of fi...

6 Books in Translation to Read in March

It's the ides of March, and the only thing I have to beware is letting time get away from me and missing some of this month's books in translation. As you well know, I make an effort to read authors who are outside the English-speaking world. It's a great way to gain a different perspective and to learn about life around the globe. Here are six books in translation on my March reading list. They cover a range of genres, and I hope at least one catches your eye. All Happy Families: A Mem...

Beer before wine – can we avoid hangovers that way?

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, many dread the incapacitated hangover of the day after – when the nausea hits you and you cannot do anything but lay in bed and every movement worsens your pounding headache. Wouldn’t it be helpful to have ways to lessen the burden of alcohol-induced hangover?A hangover is a complex of symptoms following an evening of heavy drinking that includes thirstiness, fatigue, headache, nausea, and dizziness. Even though we are more than familiar with its symptoms, scient...

Kamala Harris Clinton – An Existential Threat to Our Second Amendment ~ VIDEO

Opinion Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- Kamala Harris is a political sycophant of the highest order. She's like a desperate dude at a bar right after last call… willing to say anything to go home with whoever's still there. The sad thing is she's not even good at it. Even though she's been doing it her entire political career. It's like the right side of her mouth doesn't know what the left side of her mouth is doing. The right side of her mouth will say, “She supports the Second Amendment.” B...

The Hundred Wells of Salaga

At the end of the 19th century, the land that would become modern-day Ghana was in a state of flux. Germany and Britain were both vying for dominance while the powerful Ashanti tribe gobbled up land and gold, the slave trade was still actively practiced by certain tribes, and life was changing fast. Aminah is […]

Kitchen of the Week: A “Forgotten” Kitchen in Frankfurt, Germany, Gets a Colorful Overhaul

Lea Korzeczek and Matthias Hiller of German design firm Studio Oink create serene spaces, first and foremost. For most of their clients, and for themselves admittedly, “serene” comes in the form of tonal white and washes of subdued pastel color—but not always. “We create spaces and atmospheres for our clients, not for us,” says Lea. “It’s important to first understand and identify our client’s taste and way of living.” Their latest renovation is for a Spaniard living in Frankfurt, Germany, and c...

Unlucky ship...

The battle of Lissa in 1866, which saw Rear Admiral Tegethoff's Austrian fleet defeat a numerically superior Italian force, had an affect on ship design for the latter half of the 19th Century. (Possibly because Austria was such a naval underdog.)What was unusual about the battle is that Tegethoff formed his main squadron into a rough wedge and charged the Italian battle line, seeking ramming attacks and close engagement. This was outside the rather staid "line of battle" tactics that had been m...

Critical praise for RADICALIZED, my next book, from Booklist and Publishers Weekly

My next book of science fiction for adults is Radicalized, which will be published on March 19 (I'll be making tour appearances across the US, Canada and Germany starting on March 18); the early critical notices have started to come in and gosh, they are embarrassingly effusive! From Publishers Weekly: "Doctorow (Walkaway) captures the mix of hope, fear, and uncertainty felt by those in precarious situations, set against the backdrop of intriguing futuristic landscapes. The characters are w...

The growing role of citizen scientists in research

A movement is growing where science is no longer restricted to academics but instead it has become a pursuit for the public in general. Nature lovers have unwittingly been acting as data collectors, especially people that create lists of wildlife they see at home, in the park, or during a hike. Birdwatchers are known for making lists of the bird species they see, and scientists have come to realise that these lists can provide extremely useful information for monitoring animal populations. Throu...

I’ve Been Silicon Valley Sharia’d

I've Been Silicon Valley Sharia'd U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Last week, the little birdies in Twitter's legal department notified me that one of my tweets from 2015 is “in violation of Pakistan law.” It seems like ancient history, but Islamic supremacists never forget — or forgive.
