Winter is Coming Here

Coming down at an inch an hour some places in the 'burbs, but the urban heat island seems to be mitigating it a bit here in Broad Ripple. . [Author: Tam]

Winter is Coming

Yesterday morning, the news was predicting 2-4" of snow. Last night they were saying 3-5". This morning it's 4-7". I do not like how this curve is trending. — Tamara K. (@TamSlick) January 11, 2019 We haven't really had much in the way of winter weather so far this season (over 9" short on seasonal snow totals), so Ma Nature looks like she's fixin' to make up for that. The only upside to getting over five inches of snowfall at once is that it triggers the city into calling out the private cont...

It's called "criminal confinement"...

...and it's a felony, kids.A spokesperson at IMPD said there are "very limited circumstances when someone can be detained by the public. Acting suspicious is not one of them. Tomorrow evening is another "Introductory Self-Defense Shotgun" class at Indy Arms Company, the last one of the year. These two- and four-hour evening and weekend classes are a real boon for people who can't scare up a free weekend and the dough for a hotel room and a two-day class. [Author: Tam]

Ice, Ice Baby

Well, it didn't snow last night after all...  Instead, we got an inch or so of ice and freezing rain. All in all, I'd rather have the snow. It would have made the kids sad, though, because 2" of snow wouldn't have gotten them out of school the way an inch of ice did. Bobbi's "rain rope" looks cool when it gets iced up. But you know what doesn't look cool when it gets iced up? I mean, other than the streets? I went out and de-iced her car. Fortunately, I'd remembered to run out and put the w...

Shenanigans!

Bobbi points out an upcoming ballot question that will be put to Hoosier voters in November:"Shall Article 10, Section 5 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana be amended to require the General Assembly to adopt balanced budgets for state government that do not exceed estimated revenues unless a supermajority of two-thirds of the members of the House of Representatives and two-thirds of the members of the Senate vote to suspend the requirement?" This is shiftily written, since (as Roberta p...

Neat-o!

I met up with my friend who uses the nom de blog "Global Village Idiot" today to do some fun hanging out here in the Circle City. The centerpiece of the day was a tour of the Scottish Rite Cathedral downtown. One recent addition to the camera bag really came into its own... That Sinking Feeling

This July Fourth, in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, a century-old brick sewer line collapsed, opening a sinkhole in the middle of the intersection of Ohio and Pennsylvania. The busy intersection was closed for a week while repairs were made, further snarling traffic downtown, which was already bad from having I-65 through the heart of downtown closed for a month for bridge repairs. With that sinkhole repair only a week or so in the rearview, a crater opened last night beneath the intersecti...

Indiana is bracing for a hotly contested senate race this fall, with incumbent Joe Donnelly (D-IN) facing GOP upstart Mike Braun, who won one of the nastiest primary mud-wrestling contests it has ever been my misfortune to live through. With control of the senate teetering on a knife edge, this race is attracting national attention and a lot of out-of-state dough. Unexpected regret...

Broad Ripple High School, alma mater of angry beard-o David Letterman, former Second Lady Marilyn Quayle, and current baller Paul George, is no more. The remains are being squabbled over. Charter schools are interested in the property and would seem to have the law on their side, but developers are anxious to anchor the opposite end of The Strip by planting another ginormous "multi-use" office/retail/apartment space there. It's a quiet, low-crime neighborhood, but it is in the middle of a big city, and low-crime don't mean no-crime:He was in his car in the SoBro neighborhood, parked in his drive along the 5300 block of Carrollton. It happened during a time of day where you’ll typically see families with kids in strollers and on shoulders. People on bicycles. A mail carrier making his rounds. Police said it was about 2:00 p.m. when that man, 34, was approached by two armed men. They got away with cash and a a ce...

Fun Fact...

It's really cool having an Introductory Self-Defense Shotgun class at your local indoor range. Especially when it's a quick intro 4-hr class that runs from 6-10PM, and you can jet over there in five minutes from your house. The downside is that, like all classes involving multiple people, it's gonna run a little over. It doesn't help that I hung out a little to gab and stuff, but for a host of good reasons, I arrived home at close to eleven PM having put quite a few rounds through the tubular rep...

Outsider populism still selling well in the heartland.

So we just wrapped up a hotly contested GOP Senate primary here in Indiana, where the candidates vied to see who could paint themselves as the more Trumpian outsider. In the end, Mike Braun beat two congressman by painting himself as a businessman outsider and them as "the Swamp Brothers":Of course, this being politics, there's some prevaricatin' goin' on, since Braun's not a businessman innocent of the taint of politics as he claims, but rather a longtime state legislator. Bobbi has a post up on the debate from last night amongst three guys vying for the Hoosier GOP senatorial nomination, which boiled down to each one claiming to be Trumpier than their swampy closet Obama-lovin' opponents. It has been an ugly campaign. So, I'm reading the news story about a woman who got shot multiple times in a CVS parking lot here in Indy last night. And I get to this part:Police say the woman was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the CVS Pharmacy at Shadeland Avenue and Pendleton Pike around 8:30 p.m. Monday. Markets

Back at the hotel in Terre Haute, I turned the TV on to the Today show as I was packing my stuff for the drive back to Roseholme Cottage. This meant that I got some exposure to news programming from the local NBC affiliate, WTWO.Wow.I'm kinda spoiled because, not only is Indy a Top 25* broadcasting market, but the quality of newscasts is driven by competition in the city. Fortunate...

For some reason I thought Terre Haute was about fifteen or twenty minutes farther away than it is.It's only about an hour and twenty minutes from Roseholme Cottage to the facility where this weekend's class was held, and if I'd known that, I might have tried to commute. Instead, I booked a hotel room for the weekend.Which turned out to be fortunate because, while Terre Haute got some awful freezing rain on Saturday, midtown Indy got about eight inches of snow. . Relic of the Past

So, Indiana is the state where you can buy a bottle of Jack Daniels in the CVS with less hassle than a packet of Sudafed, since you need to take a card to the pharmacist who stores the Sudafed behind the counter with the opioids and weapons-grade plutonium but the whiskey is just out there with the soda pop and bottled water.Indiana is also...still...the only state where you can't buy cold beer anyplace but a liquor store, for some vague and no doubt John Dillinger-related reason. This leads to t...

A money-saving proposal!

So, with a good chunk of my adopted home state lying athwart the area of the country known as "The Rust Belt", it's probably no surprise that Indiana punches slightly above its weight in drug overdose deaths. From 2011 to 2013, Indiana had the fifteenth highest rate of deaths from drug overdoses among U.S. states, at sixteen per hundred thousand Hoosiers. We're only the seventeenth most populous state, and hardly a hotbed of hedonism and other assorted whoop-te-do, but the nation's overdose cente...
