"In Boston, we have our hats..."

I've explained the story before, but for the new people, here it is again: I was in my local gun shop to use the indoor range for the first time since...*checks iPhone photo library*...March 5th, and the first time in the shop since late March or early April. The place was cleaned out. I didn't go look at the handgun showcases, but it looked like it was down to a handful of high-dollar 1911s and collector revolvers. The walls were nearly bare. A guy came in to buy some ammo and was told that, fo...

From Conversation Elsewhere...

I feel like a broken record having to type this again, for probably the fourth or fifth time in the almost fifteen years now this blog's been going, but..."Buy it cheap and stack it deep when times are good. Be the ant, not the grasshopper. If you're just now buying your first gun because of 'Rona and looting, you have an excuse. If you owned a firearm at any time from November 2016 or earlier, and you're not sitting on at least a six month stockpile at your normal rate of consumption, over and a...

People are getting edgy...

"If that happens, we will have the Tools for the Boogaloo, which are guns. We will have the Dehumanization for the Boogaloo, which is our political and cultural tribalism. And we will finally have the Motivation for the Boogaloo, which is our kids need to eat. The Boogaloo Soup will be complete." . [Author: Tam]

Surprise! It turns out that you're the zombie bikers.

Speaking of New Hampshire...'Bugging out' to your survival retreat has been a staple of prepping since back when it was still called 'survivalism'.Put into actual use, the cracks in the plan are starting to show.Marko's town in NH has lots of summer homes around the lake for New Yorkers and New Englanders, and they've filled up. He admitted that he's already looking askance at anything with NY plates on his rare runs into town."For now, in the absence of any clear federal guidelines restricting ...

Planning ahead...

A friend wrote this in a discussion elsewhere:"I'm thinking if I were told to stay home, and not go to work, and not make any money because I was in a job where I couldn't work from home, and the local grocery store, while hiring extra people, only managed to snap up eight of the available 150 applicants...and the federal government got back to me with preliminary news that support would be arriving sometime in May, in the form of a $1,200 check, and rent was due April 1st, and delivery food was...

Here we are again...

I know we talked about this on the blog back in 2013, but I have to remind folks that the ammunition supply chain is not set up for this sort of situation. The vast majority of gun owners...as distinct from shooters...get to the range two or three times a year, tops. They buy a box or two of ammo, shoot it up, and go home. If you've ever bought an entire case of ammo at once, you are in a small minority. If you've ever bought multiple cases at once, you are a tiny sliver of that. When all of a sud...

Taking Precautions...

I keep my Saber Red spicy treats dispenser on the hook immediately in front of my car keys, so that I can't get the keys without first picking up the OC. Now I've added something else to the key rack!Henry Holsters has the OCD (On-demand Cleanliness Dispenser) in stock, but you're on your own for the 1-oz Purell bottles, it looks like. Fresh Market was clean and still fairly well stocked, although pasta and potatoes had been hit hard. It was uncrowded, too. The few shoppers in there were giving...

Panic! at the Ammo Counter

Well, gun owners stayed pretty phlegmatic for the last several years and we really haven't had a good ammo panic since early '13, but it looks like one is upon us again.I'm fairly well set, but if it drags out more than a couple months, I'll be happy for my Ammo Panic Blaster..."Versatility is a good thing and, besides, if the Zombie Apocalypse happens and down at the gun store all the shelves have been stripped bare except for one dusty box of .357 SIG frangibles and you don’t have anything tha...

Uncommon Denominator

Redfield said there has been "a surveillance system of deaths from pneumonia, that the CDC has; it’s not in every city, every state, every hospital.”Rouda followed up and asked, “So we could have some people in the United States dying for what appears to be influenza when in fact it could be the coronavirus?”The doctor replied that “some cases have actually been diagnosed that way in the United States today.”The reason that all the talk about how dangerous this actually is, versus the regular fl...

Getting down to the basics.

My friend John Johnston wrote a piece for Shooting Illustrated Online regarding some basic items that can go with you most every day, often in places where firearms can't..."Let's start with the caveat that everyone should carry a firearm free of restriction, infringement or government interference whenever possible. There are, however, plenty of reasons why someone may either choose--or be required by law--to leave their firearm at home, though. Finding yourself devoid of a firearm does not mea...

Freakout!

If you want a chuckle, go look at the Amazon search results for "hand sanitizer". It's like trying to find bolt carrier groups in December of 2012.I'm afraid the top'll get slashed on the Zed Drei from someone trying to get at the Purell bottle in the passenger door pocket. What are the odds?

From a discussion elsewhere about a women's self-defense-slash-"empowerment" program:"While I agree that a lot of "women's self defense" stuff is overly oriented on stranger danger and getting Gladys ready to go all krav maga on the white slavers in the Hobby Lobby parking lot rather than "minimize assholes in your life", I find the notion that one can separate "relationship safety" and "physical self-defense" into completely different spheres to be exotically naive."Like I've said before, stati...

Cancelled

The CP+ 2020 expo in Yokohama, one of the largest photo trade shows, has been canceled due to COVID-19.Trade shows, especially international ones, are hotbeds of infectious diseases, and this show is not just geographically close to China and the epicenter of the virus, but the photo industry as a whole is hip-deep in a China-sourced supply chain. Sony's image sensor business may be 'enormously' hit by coronavirus outbreak Of course, SHOT Show is also full of suppliers from China, and further,...

The Wu Tang Coriolisvirus

While I have more canned food in the house than I'm likely to consume in any given month and occasionally buy some silver because the little ingots and coins look pretty, I'm not anything like what you'd call a "prepper".This is good because it saves me having to troop into the basement, batten down the hatches, and check the batteries on my ham radio every time someone goes toes-up with an odd disease in Lesotho or Guangdong.According to the latest reports from the CDC & co. (.pdf alert), thirt...

Feels Good In The Hand

One of the most trite pieces of advice given to prospective first-time handgun buyers is to "go to a gun store and try holding a bunch of different ones to see which one feels good in your hand".Not only does "feeling good in your hand" have zero to do with how well you'll be able to shoot the gun, it also has no bearing on whether you have the hand size or grip strength to safely load and unload it.Claude has a point:"For those who are helping a prospective purchaser, demonstrate the technique ...

Security Theater

The first couple times I flew with guns, I borrowed a Pelican and some locks from Shootin' Buddy, but along about 2012 or so, I got off my butt and dug out my SKB pistol cases and bought a couple of Master Lock padlocks.I made sure they were bright pink, so you could see them and so the ticket counter folks would know they weren't TSA locks. (You're not supposed to use TSA locks because any rando with a TSA key can get in.)Then I took that lockpicking class from Uncensored Tactical... I sat up l...

On the one hand, and on the other...

John has a good breakdown of the incident here. This was a congregation that had put some planning in ahead of time... "Next question: How many of these guys carried medical gear on their person?" Definitely learned the lessons of Sutherland Springs.  Nobody was going to be prowling the aisles of this church, shooting defenseless and cowering victims. But on the gripping hand... Maximizing Resources

Having tended the chickens of Cluckheim Keep while housesitting for Marko in the dead of New Hampshire winter was a chore, but while Castle Frostbite is way out past where the buses stop running, it's not off-grid. Ensuring that the chickens had access to a thawed water source was as simple as making sure the extension cord stayed plugged in.Living off-grid on solar power means that burning electrons in a resistance grid for heat is too much of a luxury for all but the grandest setups, so Joel a...

Pictures in a book!

Forgive the potato-quality photo (which is somewhat ironic, considering the topic of the post), but I just got my copy of Tom Givens' new Concealed Carry Class book, which is packed with good info and profusely illustrated. What's neat for me is that a couple of the photos in the book are mine.I've been paid for photos before, in the sense that I do most of my own photo work for RECOIL and the various pieces written specifically for NRA online pubs, but that was always ancillary to the writing....

Wrapping up the training calendar...

For a year that I'd originally expected to be pretty light on training, 2019 wound up being my third busiest.I not only got in a bucket list class, in the form of Craig Douglas's Armed Movement In Structures, but I also ventured a little further afield from more usual shooting-type content by sneaking in the pepper spray class with Chuck and the lockpicking/entry & escape class this weekend.I also got to see two curricula I was very interested in checking out, in the form of Jedi's red dot/AIWB...
