8 Hydrating Balms For When Your Skin Is Basically Sandpaper

There are some things about winter that are cute — wool sweaters, fuzzy earmuffs, a coating of fresh snow spotted from the comfort of your bedroom window — and others that just aren't, like dry, dull winter skin. When your skin inevitably decides to throw a head-to-toe tantrum involving chapped lips, cracked heels, dry patches, and flakiness, there's only one solution to turn to: multipurpose balms, armed and ready to soothe and coax your dry self into a much happier place.Traditionally thick a...

Maneckji Bhumgara: The Indian bowler who took American cricket by storm in the 1900s

Southern California discovered cricket in the late 19th century, two centuries after the sport reached American shores, but the region lost little time in taking to the game with enthusiasm. The cricketing season began every summer in May. Several counties—including Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Diego, and San Francisco (in mid-California)—had their own leagues. Practice matches between league teams would kick off the season and near its end, a combined Los Angeles team would take on Santa Mo...

A Control-Alt-Delete For Your Body in 2019

Having a chat with Teri Fikowski at Global Regina this morning, we agreed on a basic premise for New Years resolutions: Wait until after January 7th to figure it out. Until then, you’re in a flurry of holiday gatherings, NYE parties and trying to remember what day of the week it is. After that first week of January, you have time to decompress, look around at the aftermath of the holidays, and decide how to proceed moving forward. In early December, I shared a blog post about my plans with AdvoC...

A new start: Esi Edugyan on meeting her grandmother on her only trip to Ghana

The Canadian author visited her parents’ homeland thinking she would find her home. She left feeling less Ghanaian than everI was 27 years old when I took my first and only trip to Ghana. My grandmother was old – rumoured to be 103 – and in fact she died the following year. I visited the noisy markets of Accra and the clean, palm-treed avenues of the national university; I visited the slave forts of Cape Coast and Elmina, desolate with their old horrors; I visited my mother’s birth city of Kumas...

Fight for the Right to Work

-->In a bad job market, the most important thing you can do is to keep trying.  Never give up.  Life is a race and your career is also a race.  The problem with most people is that they are often willing to give up at the first sign of difficulty.  The harder you keep trying and the more effort you put in, the more things are likely to go your way. From the time I was about 12, I had paper routes that required me to home deliver hundreds of papers all over my neighborhood by 7:00 am each mor...

What Worries You Masters You

{Thank you to Capital One for sponsoring this post.} In an era of self-help, the idea of taking control of one’s destiny and being mindful are constants. When presented with a stressful situation, I try to make a conscious effort to not let my thoughts get out of control. I am one of those people who can immediately think of ...

How Beauty Editors Actually Take Care Of Their Skin In Winter

We’re in winter denial. Even though the first snow has come and gone, we’ve put off pulling out our real cold weather gear (you know, the coat coat), and we haven’t dug out the hat and gloves from the depths of our closet. But we've been taking other precautions to brave the cold weather, like whipping out our most moisturizing skin-care products. This time of year provides us with endless opportunities to feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but it usually has the opposite effect on our skin. The FDA Says It's Now Safe To Eat Romaine From Certain States

Update: The ban on all romaine lettuce is officially over. Last week, the CDC recommended staying away from romaine altogether while an on-going investigation — into an E. coli outbreak that impacted 43 people in 12 states — determined the source of the bacteria. According to the FDA, it has been determined that the E. coli can be traced back to California. "Romaine lettuce that was harvested outside of the Central Coast growing regions of northern and central California does not appear to be r...

The Power of Perceptions

In 1991 I purchased a four-year old Audi 5000 automobile for $2,500. When the car was new, it had been listed at $40,000. It was really beautiful inside. It had all sorts of electronic controls, powered everything, and it drove incredibly well. In fact, I can honestly say that the Audi 5000 was one of the nicest cars I have ever owned. In the entire time I owned the car, I had very few problems with it. The car was very comfortable in all respects and it cost me less than a much older, cheap com...

CDC Advises Against Eating Any Romaine Lettuce After E. Coli Outbreak

Put down that salad fork, everyone. The Centers for Disease Control have just released a pretty drastic warning, advising people in the U.S. and Canada not to eat any romaine lettuce , no matter where it's from. This is due to an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which has so far sickened 32 people in 11 states, with 13 landing in the hospital. In Canada, another 18 people in two provinces were also infected. The reported illnesses all happened in October, but because the CDC has not i...
