Thoughts from Amalfi during Coronavirus

Over the past 13 years, I’ve written a lot about the Amalfi Coast. About beautiful beaches, about my favorite hikes through quiet villages, about food, about the people, and really most everything in between. Plot twist. So here I sit at my tiny desk inside our small house right in the historic center of Amalfi. Thankfully, I can see a few lemon trees and the bright bursts of purple as the bougainvillea in the neighbor’s garden starts to bloom. We have a little balcony off the bedroom that overl...

Fenty Beauty's Parent Company Is Making Hand Sanitizer to Fight the Coronavirus

Update: Coming off last week's news that LVMH would be selling hand sanitizer in France, another brand under the company's umbrella is upping its contribution to help fight COVID-19 in Italy. Bvlgari announced on March 26 that it would manufacture several hundred thousand bottles of hand-sanitizing gel to all medical facilities through the Italian government. "I believe as a major economic actor and symbol of Italy, BVLGARI has a responsibility to contribute to the national effort to help prev...

Take a Virtual Tour of the Paris Catacombs

The Paris Catacombs is “one of those places,” wrote photographer Félix Nadar, “that everyone wants to see and no one wants to see again.” If anyone would know, Nadar would. He spent three months in and out of the underground city of death, with its macabre piles of skulls and crossbones, taking photographs (see here) that would help turn it into an internationally famous tourist attraction. In these days of quarantine, no one can see it; the site is closed until further notice. But if you’re th...

The Lucky Charms of 7 Famous Men

Superstitions — beliefs that are neither directly religious nor logically sound — have surely been around since time immemorial. Humans have always sought to get the edge on the seemingly supernatural forces that govern fate — to ward off bad woo-woo and attract good luck. And while the idea that some cause can influence some entirely unrelated consequence isn’t based on reason, it does have its own sort of rationality: some research shows that superstitions can significantly improve one’s perf...

Betty Catroux/Yves Saint Laurent- Feminine Singular

Before I get to my post today, I want to thank everyone who sent messages by email and on Facebook about how the Coronavirus is affecting me and the city. I am feeling fine and healthy for the moment, and staying at home as much as possible. As far as Paris, all non-essential stores are closed except food shops (luckily the foie gras shop is open next door), pharmacies, banks, and for some bizarre reason, tabacs. As soon as tomorrow, there could possibly more drastic restrictions much like It...

In a blaze of glory, Madonna cancels final two tour dates amid coronavirus scare

(Photo: @madonna | Instagram) Madonna is likely breathing a sigh of relief after the French government banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people, thus forcing her to scrap the final two performances of her beleaguered Madame X Tour, which had been scheduled to be held at the Grand Rex in Paris later this week. “It is with profound regret that we are announcing the cancellation of the last two Madame X shows,” the 2,800-seat venue said in a statement. Do You Know who Dalida is?

Do you know who Dalida is? If not, she’s probably the most famous pop singer you never heard of.   She was born Iolanda Cristina Gigliotto in Cairo, Egypt in 1933, to Italian parents.   A great beauty, she won the Miss Egypt contest in 1954, went on to be a model and also landed some minor film roles. In 1954, she moved to Paris to further pursue her film career but failed to impress film directors and producers. Not wanting to give up, she tried singing, and studied with a strict tea...

Harper’s Bazaar: First in Fashion

Kanye West may have parachuted into Paris fashion week when he sent out surprise invitations on Saturday to his showing of Yeezy Season 8, but at Monday’s presentation for the artist’s label, his daughter North stole the show. Held at the Espace Niemeyer at 9:30 p.m., guests stood on a slippery, grassy hill outside of...

North West Turned Her Dad Kanye West’s Fashion Show Into Her Own Personal Concert

After a two-year hiatus, Kanye West returned to showing his Yeezy collections with a season 8 runway presentation during Paris Fashion Week on Monday. While the return of Yeezy would be buzzy enough on its own, most of the conversation about the fashion show centered on the debut vocal performance of North, West’s 6-year-old daughter with wife Kim Kardashian West. At the show, North appeared on stage where she rapped while models walked the runway; Kanye watched her performance with plenty of p...

No Joke, This Cushion Foundation Lets Me Skip All Other Base Makeup

Image Source: I've never been the type of girl who wears foundation - or very much makeup at all, TBH. I believe a beautiful complexion starts with skin care, so I've always focused my attention there. That said, I love a tinted moisturizer or lightweight formula that helps even out my skin tone. After years of struggling with products that were either too oily, too heavy, or too sheer, a friend of mine turned me on to the AmorePacific Color Control Cushion Compact Broad Spectrum SP...

Stella McCartney Makes the Case that Animals Should Be Friends, Not Fashion

Paris fashion week took a walk on the wild side at the Stella McCartney runway show this week where models walked alongside life-size animal figures, including rabbits, cows, a fox, a horse, and a crocodile. The animal appearances were a playful statement from McCartney, whose brand is completely vegetarian, on the use of animal products in the fashion industry. “What we try to do here at Stella is to sugarcoat a powerful, meaningful message in a little bit of humour and fun, to make our point i...

Excuse Us, but Yara Shahidi's Bantu Knots Hairstyle Stole the Show at Paris Fashion Week

Yara Shahidi wore a flawless, luminous matte beat and bantu knots to the Thom Browne Fall 2020 Ready-to-Wear show yesterday in Paris, proving that Fashion Week beauty is just as important as the street style. From her miles-long lashes to her rosy cheeks, soft cut-crease, and naturally full brows, we can't decide which aspect of the look is our favorite. In a series of photos shared on Instagram - including a flirty Boomerang posted by Shahidi of her blowing a kiss into the camera - you can see ...

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2020: Ann Demeulemeester

A special bonus posting today.   At the last minute, I was invited to three fashion show for Fashion Week by my friend Diane Pernet, who creates the eponymous fashion blog A Shaded View on Fashion.   Yesterday, it was the Ann Demeulemeester show at the Palais Challiot Theatre on Place Trocadero.   I purposely arrived early to take photos of people attending the show. Just as much fashion happens just outside the runway as the runway itself. In the Instagram age, everyone is eager ...

A First Look At JW Anderson X Uniqlo’s Latest Collection

Designer Jonathan Anderson has got to be the busiest guy in the business. Just two weeks ago, the Northern-Irish designer was in London, presenting his “Nouveau chic” fall ‘20 collection for JW Anderson to the likes of Charli XCX, Billy Porter, and Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa on the final day of London Fashion Week. Tomorrow morning, he’ll take a bow at the end of the Loewe show in Paris. But even with two luxury collections on his plate, the 36-year-old designer still manages to find time...

Christian Louboutin Exhibition(niste)

As a longtime shoe freak, I almost couldn’t contain my excitement when I read about the first ever exhibition about Christian Louboutin. Monday was the press opening and I went to the exhibition space with baited breath. First off, I love the name of the exhibition, Christian Louboutin Exhibition(niste), and the tongue in cheek (iste) on the end is so clever because walking through the show you find out what a showman Louboutin is.   I thought it was an odd choice that the exhibition is i...

11 Stunning Natural Hair Moments From Paris Fashion Week

There were a lot of key takeaways from this month's New York Fashion Week. First, we need to revamp our red lipstick stash. Second, a few highlights never hurt anybody. And, finally, Black hair is truly magical. On the streets of the Big Apple, fashion show attendees put the versatility of textured hair on display with an array of dreamy styles, from bobs to box braids. But the best part was that it didn't stop there. In Paris, showgoers continued to represent the range of Black hair with stunni...

The ’90s Called and Wants to Applaud Joe Keery For His New Chunky Blond Highlights

We've said adios to Joe Keery's brunette shaggy hair (and brief bowl cut) and hello to his new, and equally daring, chunky highlights. Back in September, Keery cut his gravity-defying coif into a grown-up bowl cut - possibly for his role in forthcoming movie Free Guy - and fans were devastated with the loss. But 2020 is a new year, and for Keery, it signals another striking hair change. This time, it came in the form of chunky blond highlights, flashing back to every '90s boyband. The Strange...
