What are your deal-breakers when it comes to powder eyeshadow?

For more matte finishes: anything really powdery that has a lot of fallout, tendency sheer out, and thinner textures–I just find that weaker performers tend to have these kind of traits. For more shimmery shades: drier, more powdery bases where they can go on unevenly or require fingertip... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to pencil eyeliner?

Sheer pigmentation, drier/firmer formulas that tug or drag, and if it’s more than a few dollars, then it can’t dry out quickly! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to cream eyeshadow?

I personally prefer more pigmented cream eyeshadows since I’m nearly incapable of doing one-and-done (it’s not really… enjoyable? to me, like my favorite part of doing my makeup is eyeshadow so doing one shade isn’t satisfying–hopefully that makes sense!). The formula has to go on evenly,... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to highlighter?

I like light to intense glow, so anything really subtle ends up being a miss for me. I’m not particular about color or pigmentation level as I find most are forgiving and easy enough to work with. I love a more sparkling/glittery finish but it can’t migrate too much over time. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What do you like about highlighter palettes? What don’t you like?

Tell us what you love and hate about... Highlighter Palettes While I can understand why a highlighter palette with similar tones may make more sense for a particular skin tone, I prefer ones that have a good variety as I think that’s a good way to get value out of the palette. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to blush?

I’ve found that anything really intense–like a deeper hue–coupled with opaque coverage ends up being something I don’t reach for. I like more light and mid-tone colors and prefer medium, buildable coverage. I also don’t like thinner consistencies and prefer something with more slip or... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to foundation?

The obvious one is that they have to have a close-enough shade match or else it’s hard to wear, but I often mix two shades together, so I am not adverse to that. I’m not a huge fan of really flat, matte and full coverage foundations and tend to reach for more medium, buildable coverage with a... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to lipstick?

Barring being at a conference or having to talk all day (and not being able to touch-up), I would not wear a formula that was drying often, if at all. I would rather re-apply than have something that lasts eight hours but dries my lips out over time. No matter how lovely a formula is, I find it... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What are your deal-breakers when it comes to lipgloss?

Milky gloss is usually too prone to settling/streaking, and I definitely find I tend to reach for sparkly/shimmery glosses over other finishes. I don’t mind a little bit of settling–the kind where the shininess of the gloss and/or sparkles is enough to camouflage it. I don’t mind some... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How do cream (or liquid) eyeshadows fit into your routine?

On a regular basis, they don’t find their way into my looks. I really enjoy them, but I still will reach for powder eyeshadow instead, which makes some sense as I tend to use five hundred shades at once and that’s easier to do with powders. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How often do you follow tutorials or recreate a makeup look you’ve seen?

I’m often testing new products, and if I’m not, then I’m putting together a color combo that I have in my head or to re-use some products I really liked, so I really don’t end up recreating or following tutorials myself. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What makes a luxury purchase “worth it” to you?

It has to perform well for the purpose I want it for, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be super pigmented or extra long-wearing, but it has work well. It’s extremely rare that I buy a product for its packaging, so as long as packaging is functional, I’m good. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What do you like about face primer? What don’t you like?

Tell us what you love and hate about... Face Primer I so rarely wear it that I don’t really have any major dislikes! I think it can be a useful step for anyone who has skin that seems to break down foundation quickly or needs extra-long wear. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Do you keep any beauty products with you on a regular basis?

I don’t really go anywhere, so not with me as in a makeup bag, purse, etc. I have a couple of lip balms on my desk (Jack Black and Hourglass Lip Oil). — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How do you feel about sheer blushes?

I prefer more medium, buildable coverage unless it’s a very, very powdery formula (where it can be easy to pick up too much product in one pass). Sheer coverage tends to go on less evenly in my experience and often has a thinner consistency. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How do you feel about sheer eyeshadows?

I don’t think that I gravitate toward sheer eyeshadow much, if at all. The closest I come is something that is very sparkly with a more transparent base, but the ones I reach for/like the most are still higher coverage (just with shimmer/sparkle). I am the opposite of one and done, LOL. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How do you feel about sheer lipsticks?

They need to apply evenly and not exacerbate the unevenness of my natural lip color (which some hues do and sometimes can be better/worse by formula), but I don’t mind semi-sheer coverage–ideally, I’d like something that has some buildable coverage to give it more versatility. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What would make single eyeshadows more compelling to you?

I like when brands curate their single ranges into “pre-made” color combinations, which I think helps give people a better idea of how to arrange products. I’d like to see more brands organize or showcase shades for certain skin tones or undertones. I also think that brands often create a core... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What do you look for in a range of single eyeshadows?

I like a lot of variety in color and finish; I want to see more basic/core shades, but I also want to see a range of color. Consistency is also critical; a line of single eyeshadows that rates from A to F and ends up averaging a B overall means it’s a pass for me–that means some shades are great... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How many shades do you have to use in a palette for it to be “worth it”?

The higher the price point, the more shades I’d have to like enough to use for it to be “worth it.” I don’t have to use every shade equally, though. I don’t know if there’s a color I wouldn’t wear at some point, so for me, I’m likely to use all shades to some degree. In a smaller... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What do you like about cream highlighter? What don’t you like?

Tell us what you love and hate about... Cream Highlighters I’ve come around to them; I like the dewy finish they can give, but I find that I still reach for powder highlighters the most–probably they’re just the most foolproof and what I have in my vanity drawer (vs. cream or liquids). — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Do you usually use an eyeshadow palette alone or combine it with another palette?

Both! For larger palettes, I’ll use them alone but also in combination with another palette, whether for transition shades or just to switch it up. For quads, I tend to use two together over just one. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]
