Weekend reading: Doomed and boomed

What caught my eye this week. A year or so has passed since global stock markets began to recover, resuming their age-old tradition of making smart people look like idiots. Tech stocks rallied first, which was blamed on 20-something traders and lockdown mania. Later in the year, small cap stocks joined the party. Just more retail madness, we were assured. Finally, cyclical and value stocks and the share prices of companies smashed-up by the pandemic began to soar. The Fed had euthanized ...

I used Clubhouse for the first time and enjoyed it way more than I thought I would - it's easy to see why the app is expected to be valued at $4 billion

A screenshot of a room in the Clubhouse app. Clubhouse/Insider Clubhouse is an invite-only, audio social media app featuring conversation rooms that users can tune into. It launched in March 2020 and has grown into a popular platform, reportedly valued at $4 billion. I tried it out and found why it was so successful during the pandemic, when people lacked community. See more stories on Insider's business page. Clubhouse is one of those things I've kept at arm's length for month...

Weekend reading: All in the game, yo, all in the game

What caught my eye this week. S hould the average Monevator reader – likely a passive investor – give two basis points about this week’s GameStop-centered mania in the markets? On the one hand, no. Even though it made the BBC News. Even after it drew an investing-related comment from your friend who only posts about cats and macramé. Only a handful of stocks went bonkers this week. They’re immaterial to the indices. You might argue mass fund ‘de-bulking’ in the face of the volatility caused pr...

Facebook will pause political donations for at least three months following siege on US Capitol

Donald Trump Mark Zuckerberg Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images/JOSH EDELSON/AFP via Getty Facebook is stopping donations to political parties for at least three months, Axios reported Monday. JP Morgan and Citibank had already made the move, while other companies have said they will cut off donations just to GOP lawmakers who objected to certifying Democrat Joe Biden as president. Brand Moves for Thursday October 8

In early March we began reporting daily on how brands were dealing with Covid-19. But it’s become clear that the current climate is one of near-perpetual disruption, so we decided to keep on telling the stories of inspiring brand leadership and strategy amid the latest crises in an anxious world. Our goal is to provide an up-to-the-minute source of information, inspiration and insight on brand moves as they happen. A “disinfection” cabinet that zaps coronavirus could be this Christmas’s must-ha...

Pandemic Trends and Online Sales Send Michaels’ Stock Soaring

Following a slow start to 2020, Michaels appears to be making up for lost time: The arts-and-crafts retailer's stock is up over 50% today compared to Friday's close. The sharp ascent came as analysts at JP Morgan upgraded their outlook for the company, stating that Michaels' new CEO, Ashley Buchanan, could "turn the tide of...

The stock market is wilder than you think

T his is one of the most revealing stock market charts I’ve ever seen. It shows just how rough the ride is when you invest in equities – in this case the FTSE All-Share index: [Click to enlarge the revelation] Source: J.P. Morgan Guide to the Markets UK, 31 March 2020, p.92 (updated quarterly).1 Most investing books show only calendar-year returns when they explain how risky the stock market is. Weekend reading: Vanguard is ready to let you SIPP

What caught my eye this week. H ard to make this sound anything like a (not paid for) plug, but I’m sure our many readers who’ve been waiting for it will all want to know that Vanguard is finally ready to take your money into its Personal Pension (SIPP). I covered the main features of Vanguard’s SIPP back in December, so won’t repeat that again. Instead here’s a couple of other articles that have run to mark the launch. From ThisIsMoney: Jeremy Fawcett, head of Platforum, said the Vanguard Per...

Weekend reading: 2020 hindsight

What caught my eye this week. I hope you all had a great Christmas and a suitably anti-climactic New Year. But there is something firmly transitional about that strange two weeks, isn’t there? A friend sent me Private Eye’s video recap of 2019, and it already seems incredibly out-of-date. Jokes about Boris Johnson and Jennifer Arcuri? So last decade. However a relic of 2019 that I’m not yet completely over yet (bar the ‘B’ word!) is the recent debate I had with the rest of the band about fina...

Weekend reading: Don’t mess with pensions. They’re working.

What caught my eye this week. T en million UK workers will increase their pension contributions from today, which should mean a more prosperous retirement for them down the line. No, Monevator didn’t just benefit from a promotion from Oprah Winfrey or Richard & Judy that delivered us few million extra readers overnight. In fact many of those millions who are about to spend less and save more are probably only vaguely aware of the fact. That’s the genius of the pension auto-enrollment scheme – ...

Brands to Watch in 2018 Midyear Update

How are brands such as Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, and Salesforce doing?  These brands were among those I had flagged last December as “Brands to Watch in 2018,” my most popular post of last year.  Given that a very eventful six months have passed, it seems appropriate to provide updates on how these “brands to watch” have been faring.  In this post, I take a look at these and several other brands that have made the news in recent months: AMAZON.  Keeping track of the number and scale of developm...

Kroger Brands Grew Faster Than National Brands

Late last week Cincinnati based grocer Kroger reported net earnings of $2.0 billion, or $2.37 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2018 with identical supermarket sales without fuel of 1.4%. On Thursday, June 21st Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen and his team discussed the Q1 2018 Results in an Earnings Call. The retailer’s first-quarter net earnings per diluted share result were slightly ahead of the company’s internal expectations due to the great start to Restock Kroger, including process ch...

2018: the year of chatbots, AI and digital personal assistants

Neville Hobson 2018: the year of chatbots, AI and digital personal assistants 2017 was the year that artificial intelligence (AI) generally gained a greater consciousness in the public mind as well as in the minds of many professionals, not the least being those in the broad communication business – especially public relations, advertising, marketing and employee communication. Every time we see a robot mentioned in the mainstream media, there’s either a photo of the Terminator or some human-l...

Austin Digerati “Awaken” To Opportunities in Civic Tech Innovation

Austin—Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Austin earlier this year were a wake-up call for Dan Webb. Webb is director of strategic partnerships at edtech startup Civitas Learning, and his wife is an immigrant who had just become a U.S. citizen in February. “We were getting calls from friends of ours asking, ‘If my wife and I get taken, can you watch our kids?’ ” he says. “I’ve never been active in politics—I voted here and there, and shared my opinions with friends—but for me it...

Future of Fintech: Creative Collaboration or All-Out Revolution?

Between 2010 and 2015, worldwide investment in financial technology ventures rose from USD $1.8 billion to USD $22.3 billion.  As fintech investments continue to rise, so too does the digital revolution in financial services. Competition is increasing between new and established financial brands, as loyalty wanes amongst millennials. While it is unclear whether fintech presents more of a challenge or an opportunity for established financial institutions, incumbents are now taking bold steps t...

Rate Rises, Winter is Coming, Access Neutrality and #MoneyTalk

Tweet Autumn has arrived in Ottawa, which of course means that Winter is Coming, but unfortunately the financial pundits down south are also warning of Financial Winter, in the face of possible Fed Rate increases by December. If the US starts ratcheting up interest rates, Canada might follow suit, or might not, to make the dollar weaker? I can’t remember what is in vogue these days, a Weak Dollar helping trade or a Strong Dollar, helping trade? If Financial Winter is coming, maybe it is time ...

Walmart and JPMorgan: Tales From The Trenches

The most seasoned and successful practitioners in the public relations business have a finely honed instinct for how something will play out in the court of public opinion. Recently, however, two very big corporate gaffes made me wonder whether their communications consiglieres turned a tin, if not deaf ear to activities that would prove deleterious to their organizations. The first entailed Jimmy Lee's ill-fated, and ultimately cancelled Twitter chat in which the legendary JP Morgan investment ...
