Fascinating documentary about minimalist composers Young, Riley, Reich, and Glass

In the first part of the 20th century, classical music was stripped of its majesty and injected with a healthy dose of discord and dissonance by avant-garde pioneers like Arnold Schoenberg, Pierre Boulez, and John Cage. Then in 1950s California and New York, a new form of contemporary classical music emerged: minimalism. "Tones, Drones and Arpeggios" is a terrific two episode BBC Four documentary on American minimalism pioneers La Monte Young, Terry Riley (above), Steve Reich, and Philip Glass ...

37 Gifts That Your Live-In Partner Needs & You Kind Of Want

A few years ago, my partner introduced me to a concept he calls "a baseball bat gift." It's a gift that you get for someone with the purpose of then using it yourself. For example, if you're someone who likes to play baseball, you'd get someone a baseball bat as a gift so you can both play together. I don't know if it's actually a thing, but it is certainly a brilliant way to spin something you want into a thoughtful "gift" for someone else. And honestly, isn't that what the holidays are all ab...

Everything You Need To Know Before Booking A Blowout For Natural Hair

“Just mess me up!” Words you'll never hear as someone sits in the salon chair for a blowout. But every time I go to a professional to get my 3B curls straightened, somehow I leave a poodle-looking mess. Most recently, I visited a swanky NYC spot for a "blowout." The crystal chandeliers, champagne at reception, and high-tech equipment suggested that my strands were in for a luxurious treat. But when the stylist pulled out a large round brush and blowdryer to straighten my thick AF hair, I knew i...
