The Under-$30 Skin-Care Launches You Need To Buy In 2019

In 2017, the consumer and retail research firm NPD Group reported that, after years of being the most slept-on category in beauty, skin care was making a huge comeback. Skin-care sales rose again in 2018, a significant 13% increase from the year prior, spawning futuristic skin trends soon set to replace almost everything sitting in our medicine cabinets.Don't get us wrong: We love the chase for newer, cooler, faster-acting products as much as any diehard on Reddit, but that doesn't mean our wal...

Watch The Smiths Play Their Last Live Show (December 12th, 1986)

It couldn’t have lasted—a flame burning twice as bright, and so on. One of the best bands to emerge from the explosion of British new wave and post-punk in the 1980s, The Smiths built a template for thousands of mope-rock bands who followed. Longstanding animosity has meant that their brief time together contains their total legacy. No reunion shows or albums—despite rumors over the decades since they broke up in 1987; no ersatz version of the band, missing key members but limping ever o...

listening to joni: #7: the hissing of summer lawns

The Hissing of Summer Lawns, 1975 Front and back covers:The landscapes of the songs Joni's seventh studio album (her ninth album overall) is both a continuation and a departure. The Hissing of Summer Lawns is rich and multi-layered, somewhat enigmatic, full of interesting images and sounds that are open to interpretation. When I'm in a certain mood, this becomes my favourite of all Joni's albums, surpassing even Court and Spark in my imagination, flooring me with its beauty and compl...

I'm listening to " I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus" by Brenda Lee..."Lee's second single featured two novelty Christmas tunes: 'I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus', and 'Christy Christmas'. Though she turned 12 on December 11, 1956, both of the first two Decca singles credit her as 'Little Brenda Lee (9 Years Old).'"I don't think I've ever heard that song before, but I'm reading about Brenda Lee this morning a propos of blogging about Trump's "I am all alone" which got me thinking about (and embedding) the...

Suhr Amp Talk :: RE: PT100 vs. Suhr SL amps??? I don't understand differences

Author: DaeniusZ Posted: Tue Dec 25, 2018 2:29 am (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 1 To my understanding they are built for completely difference purposes The SL amps seem to be Marshall Plexi clones with modern improvements. They probably behave almost identical to vintage Marshall Plexi amps like 1959SLP and 1987X. No channel switching, jumper inputs, blending the 2 channels with their respective volume knobs... everything is just like a real Plexi. The SL's ability to recreate that sound is uncanny...

Suhr Guitar Talk :: RE: questions about new pete thorn wilkinson bridge

Author: DaeniusZ Posted: Tue Dec 25, 2018 2:11 am (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 1 Probably only Pete Thorn can answer this, since he's the only one who has it lol As far as pulling up goes though, the bridge seems to be nearly identical to the Gotoh 510T with a different saddle design. I would assume it pulls up the same amount as any 510 unit with recess. Mine can do a minor 3rd on the G string and half a step on the high E when it bottoms out. I think it can go a bit further if I remove the back ...

Author: brokeguitar Subject: questions about new pete thorn wilkinson bridge Posted: Tue Dec 25, 2018 1:23 am (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 1 Can you do Steve Vai types of Flutter with this new Wilkinson bridge that locks over the strings that Pete Thorn is using? How far up can you pull a note if you recess the body? how many steps in pitch? Does the 2 point tremelo have a different TONE than say the 6 point ones?

What Makes Music Sound Like Christmas Music? Hear the Single Most Christmassy Chord of All Explained

During the past few months of this year, as in those same months of any year, we've been hearing a great deal of Christmas music. Some of the songs in the mix — "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "The Christmas Song" — few of us have ever known a time without, and others make it in because of their seasonally themed lyrical content. But certain songs just sound like Christmas songs, somehow, and to understand what, in musical terms, fills those co...

Julie London's Holiday Album

Today it's Christmas around the world, the day on which I traditionally feature the Julie London holiday album that never was. As JazzWax readers know, London is one of my favorite female vocalists. She had a captivating, cool singing style that never felt forced. Her satiny delivery, superb taste and sophisticated delivery was nocturnal and relaxed, and she routinely took on tough songs and aced them with an understated, whispery strength. I've long wondered why London resisted recording a cl...
