Photos: Pete Yorn, Dear Boy and Rain Phoenix at the El Rey Theatre

[See image gallery at] Pete Yorn’s Thursday night show at the El Rey Theatre was somber and heartfelt with a touch of hope and joy. Rain Phoenix opened the night with songs from her album “River,” an homage to her late brother that was released on the anniversary of his death, Oct. 31. She was joined onstage by the very talented and fuzzy Kirk Hellie, who played a haunting acoustic guitar most of the set. L.A. quartet Dear Boy joined Phoenix and Yorn for three nights of his tour, w...

A New Opera Company For Orange County? Not Likely

LA Opera continues to stage traditional and spectacular productions, Long Beach Opera forges ahead in its scrappy and innovative way, San Diego Opera provides yet another outlet for listeners. The market for opera in Southern California may already be saturated, and it may be a settled question: asking for a fully-staffed, active and sustaining professional company in Orange County that consistently delivers top-quality, fully-staged productions before packed and enthusiastic houses? It...

Study: Surgeons Perform Better With Music Playing In The Operating Room

As the study noted, music is already played in operating theatres as a matter of course by most doctors and nurses — about two-thirds, as it turns out. Participants said that listening to music reduced stress and made them feel more relaxed. Patients also reported that music played before their surgeries reduced stress levels. Almost all the respondents preferred classical music of some kind, with a slight preference for Mozart piano sonatas. Classical music was used in six of the studies, and ...

Stream: Moses Sumney, ‘Polly’

Moses Sumney says his new single “Polly” is “about wishing you had a few more arms than you do.” Maybe so, but Sumney comes well-armed to this sorrowful new ballad, not just with the multi-faceted instrument that is his voice but with layers of meaning. When you sort it, the single could just as easily be titled “Poly.” The song is the latest from his double-album “Græ,” coming with Jagjaguwar Records, with the digital release coming in February and the physical copies available May 15. ||| Stre...

Stream: Cartalk, ‘Sleep’

Cartalk, the brainchild of singer-songwriter Chuck Moore, has released the third single from the forthcoming album “Pass Like Pollen.” As with the first two, “Sleep” displays Moore’s penchant for turning heartache and angst into buoyant, slightly twangy rock songs. Over insistent, bruising drums, Moore sings, “I can’t write songs about you before I sleep,” an admission, the songwriter says, “to the fact that there is hurt in holding, a resistance to rest.” It’s the tune Cartalk generally closes ...

Whole album just the sound of classic mechanical keyboards being typed on

Taeha Types' Mechanical Keyboard Sounds: Recordings Of Bespoke And Customised Mechanical Keyboards is the album of the year. Roaring into life with the kinetic Apple M011A and the hard-rocking Chicory KB5160AT, it gives way to the delicate ballad Fjell before leaping into the perennial classic HHKB Pro. Granted, some tracks on the flipside might be filler material—the poppy Keycult No1-65 lacks energy and IBM P70 has all the hallmarks of a slapdash b-side, but it all comes together nicely in the...
