A valuable photograph. Some lovely music from 1940 to begin: and a studio recording from March 12 with the drums more prominently heard: We might forget — eighty years later — just how popular Tommy Dorsey was.  And his popularity … Continue reading →

Jimmy Iovine: The Music Business’s Looming Problem

“Margin. It doesn’t scale. At Netflix, the more subscribers you have, the less your costs are. In streaming music, the costs follow you. And the streaming music services are utilities — they’re all the same. Look at what’s working in video. Disney has nothing but original stuff. Netflix has tons of original stuff. But the music streaming services are all the same, and that’s a problem.” – The New York Times

How the 2010s changed music (and listening to it) forever

My MP3 collection is better than yours. The iPod that I stocked was filled to capacity with top-shelf music. Like a goldfish, my collection grew to fill the space that allowed it. It expanded to the edges of the latest version of the iPod, as it gradually grew from 5 GB to 10 to 50 […]

Favorite Media of 2019

This marks my tenth year doing this annual reflection on my favorite media of the year, which means you can also easily see what my favorite media through the decade was (see 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018). As always, this is a look at the media released in 2019 that I was able to consume this year that I enjoyed the most — it’s not a “best” list, and of course it doesn’t include all of the things that were released this year that I haven’t yet had a chance to che...

49ers Edge Seahawks in Epic Finish to Claim NFC West

The 49ers edge Seahawks in epic fashion to claim NFC West and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The final regular season game of Week 17 and of the 100th season was full of drama. On what we thought was the final play, the 49ers stopped Jacob Hollister at the one inch line. The play happened on 4th down and the replay showed just how close Hollister got before being stopped. The 49ers have to be on the edge seeing they lost to the Falcons two weeks ago in this same fashion. The dif...

(Not So) Famous Firsts – Woody Allen’s What’s Up Tiger Lily?

For more than sixty years now, Woody Allen has been an icon in the comedy world. Lately, though, it’s obvious that he’ll likely be remembered just as much for his questionable personal life instead of his films. I understand that’s for the best. (It’s important to hold people accountable for their actions.) But that does miss how much of a mark he left on American comedy. For about thirty years or so, Allen was considered not just a comedy legend but one of America’s best exports. People LOVED t...

Clippers confident Paul George’s shots will start falling

Paul George is just 21 for his last 66 field goal attempts — a chilly stretch of shooting that the Clippers have met with an assured shrug. “He’s just not making shots,” coach Doc Rivers said, dutifully steering criticism away from the new Clippers superstar, who spent his off day Sunday unveiling three new basketball courts at Domenic Massari Park in his native Palmdale. “We gotta do a better job of getting him shots,” Rivers added. “(The) offense has gotta run better for him to get shots.” “It...
