Carey was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Tierra Posey, also 21, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. According to witnesses and a released affidavit of the shooting, Carey had just picked up her 5-year-old daughter from school and had her 2-month old daught...

DJ T-1000’s Generator revived from reel-to-reels, and more Detroit back catalogs

Here’s another great Bandcamp phenomenon – digital reissues. And for a Detroit techno throwback, where better to start than this DJ T-1000/Generator remaster – and two big back catalogs, while we’re at it? Step back in time to 1992. TXC-1 EP by DJ T-1000 DJ T-1000 aka Alan Oldham paired up with Ethan Nep Sevy (see also his band Code Industry) to form the label Generator. The result: an epic, delicious duo called TXC-1 (say it “toxic,” like Britney Spears). Alan was a key figure in the...

Interview: Ethan Gruska, on process, progress and his ‘schizophrenic’ new album ‘En Garde’

A 2017 headline in the Los Angeles Times posed the question “L.A.’s next great singer-songwriter?” before answering, “It might be Ethan Gruska.” It was a perfectly valid exploration. Gruska, the son of television composer Jay Gruska and grandson of film composer John Williams, already boasted several bona fides, not the least of which were the two albums he made with his sister, Barbara (now drumming for the Foo Fighters), as the Belle Brigade. And Ethan’s solo debut, “Slowmotionary,” did not di...

SiriusXM and Pandora test bundle discounts

It’s been less than a year since SiriusXM completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of streaming music service Pandora, but the two companies have already leveraged their collective assets to boost each other’s services. For example, SiriusXM talk shows arrived on Pandora as podcasts, while a Pandora-powered station now streams popular songs for both sets of listeners. Now, the company is considering tying the two services together in a different way — by packaging them as a discounted bundle. What...

Video: Other Lives, ‘Lost Day’

Jesse Tabish, frontman of Oklahoma-bred orchestral rockers Other Lives, is a notoriously slow worker. There have been three Other Lives albums since 2009, a self-titled debut, “Tamer Animals” (2011) and “Rituals” (2015), all of which are varying degrees of what scribes like us like to call “transcendent.” We’ll bust out the word again to describe Other Lives’ new song “Lost Day.” Its release today marks the end of a 4 1/2-year silence from the band (excepting the score Tabish wrote for Arthur Mi...
