SO SWEET, SO MELANCHOLY: JINJOO YOO, KI-HONG JANG, JAMALE DAVIS: CLARENCE PROFIT’S "DON’T LEAVE ME" (February 8, 2020)

This beautiful rueful performance — created by Jinjoo Yoo, piano; Ki-Hong Jang, guitar; Jamale Davis, string bass, and video-recorded by Jackson Notier — from their February 8 evening at Gin Fizz — is doubly obscure but shouldn’t be.  “Obscure” because … Continue reading →

Smitty Bandz – “3” (Album Review)

Atlanta based rapper, Smitty Bandz, has been releasing music for a couple years now, five in fact, based on the quick little bit of digging I did on Soundcloud and Spotify. His latest release, an album titled “3,” is an easy going project seemingly meant for the listener to soak in casually. If you aren’t one who minds spoilers, I’ll tell you now; this album is okay. It isn’t exactly bad, but there are too many things that, in my opinion, keep it from being good. For instance, the very first...

Suhr Guitar Talk :: RE: Bridge humbucker to go with 2x ML SS

Author: noice Posted: Thu Feb 27, 2020 10:28 am (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 2 I have 2 ML's and a regular SSV in the bridge. I find even the SSV to be on the verge of being too hot sometimes It does rock for sure though. Since you're looking for versatility, I'd say don't rule out the regular SSV or Thornbucker. As Pete Thorn said in one of the demo vids, you can always get more gain from an amp or pedal, but you can't really go the opposite direction if your pickup is kinda dirty to begin with....

George Gershwin And His Attempts To Define An American Sound

Over the course of his career, Gershwin was praised and criticized in equal measure for his willingness to borrow and fuse musical elements from various cultural and ethnic realms. He regularly tapped into the aesthetic values and popular tastes of his surroundings, in an attempt to compose works that would connect with as broad a public as possible. This approach to composition produced mixed results.  – Times Literary Supplement

Four Women In Tech On How Digital Voice Assistants Would Be Different If They Were Designed By Women

If your Amazon Echo’s Alexa weren’t gendered, would you speak to your device differently? According to this 2019 UN study, the answer, for many, is yes. The paper posits that voice assistants, most of which are gendered female, perpetuate problematic stereotypes of subservience and biases against women — even at an unconscious level. But what if women were the ones designing the voice assistants to begin with? Do factors like gender impact the way the products themselves are brought to ...

11 Stunning Natural Hair Moments From Paris Fashion Week

There were a lot of key takeaways from this month's New York Fashion Week. First, we need to revamp our red lipstick stash. Second, a few highlights never hurt anybody. And, finally, Black hair is truly magical. On the streets of the Big Apple, fashion show attendees put the versatility of textured hair on display with an array of dreamy styles, from bobs to box braids. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall as conductor Gustavo Dudamel and jazz icon Herbie Hancock began to brainstorm who and what they might include in the LA Phil‘s upcoming Power To The People! festival. Just imagine the suggestions: What about Patti Smith and her band? Do you think Angela Davis might come and talk? Hey, maybe Terence Blanchard can play his scores for Spike Lee’s films? The Surprising Value Of “Bad” Dates, According To Real People

Remember that one date with the “method actor” who didn’t believe in tipping? The one with the stand-up comedian who insisted on recording your back-and-forth for material? The one where your counterpart arrived 27 minutes late, wearing just one flip-flop? Naturally, the list goes on. But here’s a hot take: These dates, albeit “unsuccessful,” have their merit, too. Whether we’re pursuing eternal love, great sex, or solid banter over negronis, our sub-par dates can be just as formative as our...

Mango’s Spring ‘20 Campaign Collection Has The ‘70s Vests & Suits You’ve Been Looking For (But For Way Less $$)

As a market editor, I get a lot of questions about clothes. Where to get them? How to wear them? How much to spend on them? But recently, everyone seems to want to know one specific thing: Where can they get a good suit that’s fashion-forward, but not too weird? Usually, I first ramble off a list of designers that specialize in tailoring (Gabriela Hearst, Peter Do, and Tibi, to name a few) before ducking from the inevitable “wait, how much are they??” follow-up. But as of today, my answer to tha...
