Bill Murray Explains How He Was Saved by John Prine

Judging by the outpouring of affection in online comment sections, Chicago folk musician John Prine (may he rest in peace) has helped a great many of his fans through tough times with his humanist, oft-humorous lyrics. Add funny man Bill Murray to the list. Taping a video in support of The Tree of Forgiveness, Prine’s first album of new material in over a decade, Murray recalled a grim period in which a deep funk robbed him of all enjoyment. Though he carefully stipulates that this “bumm...

Hal Willner – RIP

I really hope this does not just turn into a blog of obituaries. I just read that music producer Hal Willner has died. I did not know Mr. Willner well, but I did get to work with him once. It was a very fun session, and he was a nice dude. I feel lucky to have had that chance. Peace and love to his family and loved ones. Jeff & Hal at a U2 concert in New Orleans in 2017

Do Musicians Need A Federal Works Progress Program To Survive?

Musicians have lost the battle to monetize recordings. With the internet awash in cheap streaming and free videos, our income now comes from live performance alone. Even if livestreams end up being only a short stopgap, offering them up for free on a large scale sets a dangerous precedent. Forced to be pioneers in this nuanced, digital field, we need to set the standard now—past performance footage is different than creating totally new content, for example. How do we assign value in an array o...
