Are Shinedown America’s Most Popular Rock Band?

Filter bubbles are real. Particularly in the social media era, we are all trapped inside a likeminded feedback loop of our own making. I think we all recognize this on an intuitive level, but sometimes a reminder that you inhabit a bespoke cultural silo will come along and smack you in the face. Recently I … More »

Jayhaan: Mobed by Day & DJ by Night

Jehan Bhesania, better known by his stage name ‘Jayhaan’ is a priest by day and a DJ by night. His budding career in music has already spearheaded the entry of Jersey Club in India which was previously alien to the Indian Music Industry. Using this momentum, he is changing the face of electronic music by fusing the sounds of Western Jersey Club, bass music and trap, with Indian instruments and melodies. People often talk about a mid-life crisis, but seldom do we hear of the very real identi...

Delivering Songs To Your Home – One House At A Time

Amy Helm: “It’s interesting as a musician to go to so many different places and play for so many different people and have such a direct connection with them. That’s not something you get in a room of a hundred people or several thousand people. It’s nice. And it’s right on time. And then you get a little window into what they’re dealing with.: – NPR

The Beastie Boys & Rick Rubin Reunite and Revisit Their Formative Time Together in 1980s NYC

The Beastie Boys’ record-shattering Licensed to Ill is thirty-four years old. This fact might mean nothing to you, or it might mean that you are thirty-four years older than the moment the album came out in November of 1986, and suburban parents around the country, maybe even your parents, freaked out in unison. The album was a stroke of genius from producer Rick Rubin, delivering hip-hop safe for white kids while also giving them permission to be as obnoxious as possible. Ostensibly a r...

Who Would Go To A “Herd Immunity” Music Festival This Summer?

A three-day “herd immunity” music festival scheduled to take place in Ringle, Wisconsin, in mid-July is taking this energy to the, uh, extreme. With the exception of drive-in concerts and performances streamed online, live music events have largely been cancelled for the foreseeable future. Health experts have warned concerts could be “superspreaders” of COVID-19 and predicted they wouldn’t be feasible till 2021. – Mic

Japanese railway melodies played on pocket calculators

Chiptune musician @atarimae_400 learned that the jingles played at some Japanese railway stations sound similar to the tones generated by a certain model of pocket calculator. So @atarimae_400 performed some of the melodies on his own adding machines. As Kraftwerk sang, "I'm the operator with my pocket calculator."

Premature Evaluation: Jessie Ware What’s Your Pleasure?

Jessie Ware was in need of a rebirth. Her most recent album, 2017's Glasshouse, was a paradox -- her most personal songwriting in the wake of becoming a mother, but stylistically lost to sounds that didn't feel like her own. But beginning with “Adore You” way back in February of 2019 and continuing with a … More »
