#TrackoftheDay: “Insane in the Membrane”

Prince Fatty feat. HorsemanUK (2012) When you look down the list of “Songs I Didn’t Realize I Needed a Cover Of,” you will definitely find this version of Cypress Hill’s track. And I believe I found this via the excellent funk and soul show on BBC 6 Radio hosted by Craig Charles. Highly recommended. You can find that on Craig Charles’ Funk and Soul Club compilation. Which is all excellent. amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "true"; amzn_asso...

Ticketmaster Plans To Check COVID Vaccine Status For Concerts

Pfizer announced this week that the COVID-19 vaccine they’re developing showed a 90% efficacy rate during a preliminary clinical trial. It’s still early days, and there’s no concrete timeline on when the vaccine, if it is indeed effective, might be made available to the public. But with some tentative light now visible at the end of the pandemic tunnel, Ticketmaster is developing a new plan to use smartphones to verify concertgoers’ COVID vaccination status and test results before concerts. Ti...

CMAs Wanted “No Drama” Tonight But There Is Already So Much Drama

The Country Music Association Awards are tonight. And unlike most award shows, which have had virtual ceremonies this year, the CMAs are happening live and in-person at Nashville’s Music City Center. “No drama, just music,” the Country Music Association tweeted last week. “It’s been a year, y’all. But for three hours next Wednesday on ABC, this is a no-drama zone.” How wrong they were! That tweet itself caused drama, as Vulture points out, with people like Margo Price criticizing the Country M...

The New Realities Of Live Music In Clubs

“It’s a new normal for these concerts, and yet another uncanny valley of the post-Covid world: a social experience where we can’t socialise; a show where dancing, hugging and head-banging are essentially illegal. Sweaty dance floors and beer queues are out, replaced by parlour-style seating and severely reduced capacities, often resulting in artists performing multiple shows a night. Dinner and a show has, against all odds, become the norm again.” – The Guardian

Black Louisiana Teen Quawan “Bobby” Charles Found Dead in Creek, Face Disfigured Like Emmett Till’s

The family of a Black teen who went missing is demanding answers after his mutilated and disfigured body was found in a creek in a sugar cane field in rural Louisiana. Hear Pauline Anna Strom’s “Marking Time” From First New Album In 30 Years

Following a string of self-released albums in the ’80s under the name Trans-Millenia Consort, San Francisco new age synth composer Pauline Anna Strom found a new audience in 2017 when the Brooklyn experimental label RVNG Intl. put out an anthology of her music called Trans-Millenia Music. Although she had stopped making music decades ago to focus on her spiritual healing practice, Strom saw the collection’s success as a sign from the universe and decided to record a new album, her first in over ...

Covid Fan Tutti: Opera In Exotic Places

LA’s Pacific Opera Project’s unconventional, often playful productions have included a bilingual “Madama Butterfly” performed in the Aratani Theatre in L.A.’s Little Tokyo; a “Magic Flute” that took its cue from 1990s video games; and at the outdoor Ford Theatres, a version of Mozart’s “Abduction From the Seraglio” staged as an episode of “Star Trek.” Still, the company has done nothing quite like what it is attempting in the parking lot of Camarillo United Methodist Church in Ventura County, a...

Marilyn Manson Hangs Up On Interviewer When Asked About Evan Rachel Wood’s Abuse Allegations

Marilyn Manson hung up after being asked about Evan Rachel Wood’s abuse allegations during a telephone interview for the UK magazine Metal Hammer. In 2018, Wood spoke in front of the House Judiciary Subcommittee in support of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill Of Rights Act. In her testimony, she said that she was assaulted and detailed an abusive relationship with a timeline that seems to match up with the period that she was in a relationship with Manson. She again spoke the following year in...

How the Beach Boys Created Their Pop Masterpieces: “Good Vibrations,” Pet Sounds, and More

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPcPkc6KD7k If you ever decide to listen through the Beach Boys’ entire studio discography, one album per week, it will take about six months. I know because I just finished doing it myself, beginning with their simple celebration/exploitation of early-60s youth beach-and-car culture Surfin’ Safari and ending, six months yet half a century later, with the lushly elegiac That’s Why God Made the Radio. Between those points, of course, came the songs everyone...

Watch Tame Impala Cover Nelly Furtado

Tame Impala have given quite a few remote performances throughout the pandemic, mostly performing originals from their divisive 2020 album The Slow Rush (not everyone liked it as much as me) but sometimes slipping in a cover like “Jealous Guy” for John Lennon’s 80th birthday. In a new Annie Mac Session for BBC Radio 1, they’ve added another cover to the pile. This time their choice of material is not an obvious Kevin Parker inspiration like John Lennon. In its synth-pop trio incarnation, the g...

Artist To Watch: Shygirl

Shygirl isn’t ashamed to feel shameful, or gross, or uncomfortable, or nasty, or even cunty. Her music might not be the first choice for a family barbecue, but it covers a whole spectrum from endearing to pleasurable. “I don’t think any feeling is invalid or shameful,” she says over the phone from her home in East London. “I can laugh at myself. It’s not to feel shame about being embarrassed or feeling awkward. They’re all experiences, and they make me human.” Born Blane Muise in South London,...

Ruby Bridges, who is now 66 years old, announced the sad news of her mom’s passing on Instagram Tuesday evening (Nov. 10). “Today our country lost a hero,” Bridges shared. “Brave, progressive, a champion for change. AC/DC – “Realize”

Two days from now, the legendary goons of AC/DC will return with the new album Power Up. A few week ago, the band emerged from the brink of extinction with as many classic-era members as possible: Guitarist Angus Young, singer Brian Johnson, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Phil Rudd. Johnson, Williams, and Rudd were all out of the band at various points in the last few years, but they’re all back. Founding rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young died in 2017, but now Stevie Young, nephew of Malcolm a...
