All of it is part of President Xi Jinping’s call for a “national rejuvenation” with broader and tighter control over many facets of Chinese society. As CNN reports, there have been an array of things going on with regards to pop culture, including the “erasure” of “misbehaving celebrities” by wiping their biographies and movies from the Chinese internet and streaming platforms. The National R...

"He take me round to the city hospital. The clock was striking ten/I done hear my companion say, 'I don't b'lieve I'll see your smiling face again.'"

A song — "Meningitis Blues" — that I ran into while poking through jug band music on Spotify (which I was doing as a result of listening to a podcast about skiffle music). I thought it made interesting listening during our covid times.  Here's the Wikipedia article on The Memphis Jug Band, which was "an American musical group active from the mid-1920s to the late 1950s... [that] featured harmonica, kazoo, fiddle and mandolin or banjolin, backed by guitar, piano, washboard, washtub bass and...

Hear Charlie Watts Inimitable Isolated Drum Tracks on “Gimme Shelter,” “Beast of Burden,” and “Honky Tonk”

When I was a kid in New Jersey, if you were looking for work, there’d be ads for musicians. In the mid-60s and 70s, they would invariably say: “Wanted: Charlie Watts type drummer” — Max Weinberg Since Charlie Watts passed away last month, tribute upon tribute has poured in to celebrate his style, his austere simplicity, his role as the calm, steady eye of the Rolling Stones’ roiling storm. “Drumming is often ugly,” Amanda Petrusich wrote at The New Yorker, “but Watts looked so beautiful ...

Radioactive Tubular Girls: mashup of Kraftwerk, Mike Oldfield and Duran Duran

It was today brought to my attention that we have never posted Radiactive Tubular Girls, LeeDM101's perfect mashup of Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk, Duran Duran and (courtesy of Instamatic's video) midcentury public information films about nukes. I might pose this as the last gasp of the 2000s, but honestly, the 2000s never really deserved anything this good and LeeDM101 never stopped being good. — Read the rest

Skunk Anansie: how we made Weak

‘It was a vulnerable moment that turned into a moment of strength. It was basically me saying: I am never going to be hit by anyone ever again’ Weak was written about an experience I’d had a few years earlier. I was dating a guy I shouldn’t have been going out with in the first place: he was older, he wanted to get married and all these things, but he didn’t ask me, he just decided. Back then, I was so meek and mild. My friends would say: “Your boyfriend is so controlling. You have to stick up f...

Adopting a cat is a big responsibility. Though they are cute and fluffy, there are different things that you have to understand and keep in mind before getting one. Meet Brushy One String, the One String Guitar Player Who Will Blow Your Mind

When Jamaican musician Andrew Chin, better known as Brushy One String first told friends about his vision — “a dream in which he was told to play the one-string guitar” — they responded with mockery — all but one, who “insisted it was fate,” writes Playing for Change, “and that he had to make that dream come true.” So Brushy set out to do just that, playing on streetcorners and in the market, “in a big broad hat and sunglasses,” he says. The music came to him naturally. He is no ordinary...
