Jazz Resurgence in Pittsburgh

There are new clubs in the city and new haunts where jazz can once again be heard regularly. There is fresh talent filling out the rosters of trios and quartets. And there are fresh ears hungry for a bit of cultural nourishment. – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Yebba Is The Real Deal

You could be forgiven for assuming Yebba is British. The singer born Abbey Smith — her stage name is Abbey backwards — is working in a hip-hop-adjacent retro soul realm that, in the 21st century, has been dominated by English singers like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele. One listen to “Boomerang,” the most decidedly Winehouse-esque throwback on Yebba’s debut album Dawn, is enough to clue you in to Back To Black producer Mark Ronson’s involvement. But no, Yebba is not from the UK. She’s from Arka...

Drake Has Nine Of This Week’s Top 10 Singles

One week in 1964, the Beatles held all of the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100. In the 57 years after that, no artist ever achieved the same feat. For a while, people assumed it would be simply impossible for anyone to do what the Beatles did that week. But that was before Billboard started using streaming to figure out the Hot 100. These days, a big artist can release a big album, and every song can appear on the Billboard chart. A week and a half ago, Drake, the biggest artist, released...

Free Jazz Musician Peter Brötzmann Responds To Jimmy Fallon Mocking: “The World Is Full Of Ignorants And Stupidos”

Jimmy Fallon has a recurring bit on The Tonight Show called “Do Not Play,” in which he highlights “some real songs from real bands that I think you should avoid.” A few months ago, he featured a song by the obscure Slint dance-funk offshoot King Kong. And last week, he made fun of The Peter Brötzmann Sextet / Quartet‘s 1969 free jazz album Nipples, joking that it “sounds like a Guitar Center on a busy Saturday.”

St. Vincent talks bringing ‘Daddy’s Home’ to Hollywood Bowl as ‘The Nowhere Inn’ film debuts

“Daddy’s Home,” the sixth studio album from St. Vincent, arrived in May, but Annie Clark, the artist behind the stage name, says it hasn’t felt fully finished until now. “A record doesn’t really feel complete to me until I’ve actually played the songs for people and with people in real-time,” Clark says on a recent phone call. “Because you get to see how the energy in the crowd changes. “You get to see, like, ‘Oh, they’re all singing along to that part,’” she says. “You get to know in a real way...

Father, Son, Holy Ghost Turns 10

The golden age of Girls was over almost as soon as it started. “Conceptually, the band Girls… kind of never really came together,” Christopher Owens told a reporter back in 2012. Owens was Girls’ lead singer and primary songwriter, and one of the San Francisco group’s only two permanent members; bass player and production wiz Chet “JR” White was the other constant. “I added it up once and something like 21 people had played in Girls over two albums and one EP,” Owens explained in that same inter...

Dua Lipa Announces North American Arena Tour With Megan Thee Stallion & Caroline Polachek

Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia was one of the best straight-up pop albums of 2020. But the LP arrived at the same time as the pandemic, which means Lipa has not yet had a chance to fulfill her destiny as an arena-conquering star in North America. That’s about to change. Lipa, who had the best performance at this year’s Grammys, will take her show across North America, starting in February of 2022, and she’ll bring some friends along.

Strange Mercy Turns 10

It was the first great transformation of St. Vincent. Gone were any remnants of twee Brooklyn indie affectations. Gone were fussy orchestral arrangements. Gone were the harsh contrasts between the light and the dark. This was a new St. Vincent, one of mutated sounds, glassy atmospherics, and narcotic haze. Mechanistic, icy, otherworldly — and, for the first time but not the last, transcending any narrative or music scene or associations. When Strange Mercy came out 10 years ago today, St. Vincen...
