Bat Fangs – “Talk Tough”

Bat Fangs, the duo of Ex Hex’s Betsy Wright and Flesh Wounds’ Laura King, make a form of hard-stomping power-pop, uniting garagey indie-pop aesthetics with rip-snorting Cheap Trick swagger. Four years ago, the duo released a whomp-ass self-titled debut album. On Friday, Bat Fangs return with their sophomore LP Queen Of My World, and more asses will be stomped.

When More Is Less

E.O. Wilson Consilience (1998) The explanation for the rarity of great beauty may be (and I continue to speculate) the behavioral phenomenon known as the supernormal stimulus . Widespread among animal species, it is the preference during communication for signals that exaggerate the norms even if they rarely if ever occur in nature. e.g. Male butterflies who can be more attracted to mechanical replicas that have the biggest, brightest, and most rapidly moving wings than to actual females. ...

20 Years Ago: How The iPod Changed Everything

The eureka moment was the click wheel that enabled nimble search and control without a keyboard. Jobs wanted it as small as possible, with an apocryphal tale circulating that he tossed one prototype in a fish tank, pointed at the bubbles coming out and said they indicated dead space that should be removed. – The Guardian

This Halloween, New Christmas Albums Are Sneaking Up On You Like “BOO!”

Nothing says Halloween like Christmas music. Every year, before October is even over, dozens of new Christmas songs and albums are announced. And for the past five years, I have been running them down on or before All Hallow’s Eve, mainly to spook those of you who can’t stand this stuff.

Katy Perry – “All You Need Is Love” (The Beatles Cover)

The Beatles’ starry-eyed 1967 single “All You Need Is Love” is almost certainly the worst of that band’s 20 #1 hits. Today, the song reaches a sort of logical conclusion. Katy Perry, someone with a whole lot of #1 hits herself, has covered “All You Need Is Love” for a Gap ad campaign.

Aminé – “Charmander”

Portland rapper Aminé has a new single and video out today called “Charmander.” Visually, “Charmander” (co-directed by Aminé and Jack Begert) is Very Relatable Content, with Aminé holing up in a wooded cabin with only a partner and the rapper’s IRL dog Oliver (blown up a few sizes) for company. It’s also the first new song Aminé’s released since his 2020 album Limbo.

Watch Kelly Clarkson Cover The Weeknd’s “Call Out My Name”

When you step back far enough, it’s pretty crazy that the house band on Kelly Clarkson’s daytime talk show spent their weekend working out how to play a Nicolas Jaar sample. Three years ago, the Weeknd released “Call Out My Name,” a dramatic ballad built from a sample of Jaar’s “Killing Time,” on his EP My Dear Melancholy. The song was a #4 hit — not the Weeknd’s biggest, but pretty big regardless. Today, Kelly Clarkson sang “Call Out My Name” on TV.

Lady Dan – “Just The Two Of Us” (Bill Withers Cover)

Lady Dan, the project of Austin-based musician Tyler Dozier, released their debut album I Am The Prophet earlier this year. Today, Dozier is back with a cover of Bill Withers’ “Just The Two Of Us.” It’s a plodding and ominous take on the track, and it comes with a horror-inspired music video just in time for Halloween. Dozier, who directed the video herself, explains:

The Strokes Announce New Years Eve Show At Barclays Center

Last night, much of your Stereogum staff saw the Strokes close out Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival with a set that, according to our own Chris DeVille, was “sloppy but transcendent.” “Sloppy but transcendent” also describes a sort of best-case scenario for a night out on New Years Eve, so it’s nice to report that the Strokes will play a New Year’s Eve show in their New York hometown.

Bon Iver Announce 2022 US Tour

Over the weekend, Bon Iver played a pair of 10th anniversary shows for Bon Iver, Bon Iver, which were some of the only live performances that Justin Vernon has done since the pandemic began. But today Bon Iver has revealed plans for a 2022 US tour, which will take place before an already-announced European leg. The dates kick off in Arizona at the end of March and wrap up in Asheville at the end of June, with stops in Austin, Atlanta, Miami, and New York City along the way. Openers will be Dijon...

Midlake – “Meanwhile…”

Midlake’s last album, Antiphon, was released in 2013, and it saw guitarist Eric Pulido stepping up into a new role as lead singer after the departure of the band’s first singer. The members of the band have had some excursions since then, but went on hiatus and haven’t released another album since. But today they’re announcing a new full-length, FOR THE SAKE OF BETHEL WOODS, which will be out in March. It was produced by John Congleton and takes inspiration from the site of the original Woodstoc...

The Vancouver Opera May Be Returning To A New Kind Of Normal

A costume sale for Halloween heralded the semi-return to normal for an opera house whose costume shop pivoted last year to mask-making. Cleaning out felt good: “There is another life for our stuff, and another life for our company.” – Vancouver Sun

Listen to the weirdest Munsters musical album from 1964

Thanks to the ever-delightful Bizarre Albums podcast, I learned that The Munsters release not one but two different albums in 1964. The first one is just some generically delightful 60s music inspired by the show. But the second one, At Home With The Munsters, is where it gets good — a bizarre audio tour of the Munster family home, with songs sung by each of the cast members. — Read the rest

The Strokes Closed Out Shaky Knees With A Sloppy But Transcendent Hit Parade

Before all concert lovers struggled with the absence of live music during the pandemic, there was plain old FOMO. And in that bizarre phase of 2020 before the world shut down, one of the last live bands giving me FOMO was the Strokes. At the time, I didn’t know that The New Abnormal, their first album in seven years, would be such a fan favorite. All I knew was that one of the formative bands of my teenage years was finally playing shows again, starting with what looked like a spectacular New Ye...

Elvis’ Three Appearances on The Ed Sullivan Shows: Watch History in the Making and from the Waist Up (1956)

Oh, to be in the studio audience of CBS’ Television City in Hollywood on September 9th, 1956, to see Elvis Presley’s gyrating pelvis rocket him to superstardom on The Ed Sullivan Show. His appearance made television history, but 60 million home viewers were left to fill in some major blanks, as the rising heartthrob was filmed from the waist up whenever he was in motion. Sullivan had been hesitant to book Elvis, not wanting to court the outrage the magnetic young singer had sparked in tw...

How Randy Bachman Found His Stolen Favorite Guitar After 45 Years, with the Help of Facial-Recognition Software

Facial-recognition technology has come into its own in recent decades, though its imagined large-scale uses do tend to sound troublingly dystopian. Still, some of its actual success stories have been pleasing indeed, few of them so much as the one briefly told in the video above by Bachman Turner Overdrive’s Randy Bachman. Its protagonist is not Bachman himself but one of his guitars: a 1957 Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins, a model named after the star Nashville guitarist. “This is the first re...
