Video: Z Berg, ‘I Fall for the Same Face Every Time’

Z Berg has a pretty clear vision of her music aesthetic. She says, “If Laura Palmer didn’t die … And Roman Polanski made a movie about her twenties, scored by Andre Previn, with lyrics by Scott Walker, sung by Dusty Springfield.” She’s looking nostalgically at her own twenties in releasing a video for “I Fall For The Same Face Every Time,” a song that originally surfaced as a solo acoustic number in 2013, back when her pop band Phases was still going by the name JJAMZ. Now with more fleshed out ...

Watch Masika Snatch the Life Out of Hazel E’s Wig on “Love & Hip Hop Hollywood”

There’s an old proverb that says, “Don’t start none, won’t be none.” Apparently, Hazel E either hasn’t heard of that or she just doesn’t care, because she’s always starting something with somebody, especially when it comes to her long-running beef with fellow Love & Hip Hop Hollywood castmate Masika Kalysha. In case you’re not familiar with Masika and Hazel (or, “Nasal,” as Masika calls her because of her big nose), let’s give you a quick backstory. On the first season of LHHH, the two women beg...

A Jean Huré moment

Alas, no recording seems to exist of this extraordinary music from Huré's La Cathédrale, in which all twelve notes of the chromatic scale sound simultaneously, in advance of Berg's Altenberg Lieder (though not, to be sure, of Jean-Paul-Égide Martini's Sapho). I can find almost no information about the work. Was it based on the Huysmans novel? [Author: Alex Ross]

Hear Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Shifted from Minor to Major Key, and Radiohead’s “Creep” Moved from Major to Minor

A few years ago, we shared a version of R.EM.’s 1991 alternative hit “Losing My Religion” as reworked from a minor to a major key through digital processing by Ukranian musician Oleg Berg and his daughter Diana. Many people thought the project a travesty and railed against its violation of R.E.M.’s emotional intent. But the stronger the reactions, the more they seemed to validate Berg’s tacit argument about the important differences between major and minor keys. We know that, in gene...

Alban Berg on the web and in social media

The date 9 February 2017 marked 132 years since the Viennese composer Alban Berg’s (1885-1935) birth. Despite this advanced age, Berg nonetheless maintains an active profile in social media. But before we review Berg’s current online profile, let’s take a moment to explore the “social media” of his time — the newspapers and magazines, coffee houses, and the “picture postcards” circulating around Vienna that kept members of the intellectual and artistic community in the loop and caused many to “f...

Here's What's Stopping Friday Night Lights' Possible Revival

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images We're living in the age of the revival. Maybe it's that we're turning to media for comfort during a time when little seems guaranteed. Maybe our creatives are too busy having utter meltdowns to produce anything new and great. Or maybe they just make a lot of money for a lot of people.Friday Night Lights might not be latest to join the Netflix carousel of nostalgia. At least, that's what creator and executive producer Peter Berg said on The Bill Simmons Podca...
