If there is one thing that’s common right now, it’s that the housing market is all in favor of the seller. The pandemic has made the market boom and sellers are able to sell their homes at and above what they’re truly worth. People are heading into bidding wars and house prices are smashing through the roof, and considering all of that, the housing market is very intimidating right now. Does that mean that you shouldn’t buy it? Absolutely not! You should buy the house of your dreams right now ev...

Hand Habits – “Graves”

Next month, Meg Duffy is releasing a new Hand Habits album, Fun House, the follow-up to 2019’s wonderful placeholder. We’ve heard two songs from it so far, “Aquamarine” and “No Difference,” and today Duffy is sharing another one, the hushed and still “Graves.” Featuring backing vocals from SASAMI, the album’s producer, it’s a mournful yarn about not falling back into old habits: “Don’t go digging up graves/ Why can’t you just let it lay?” Duffy asks. They say the track “is a secret message to my...

Songwriter Diane Warren talks first-ever album made with Celine Dion, John Legend and Darius Rucker

Diane Warren is one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in music, though her name isn’t as widely known as the artists for whom she’s written nine No. 1 hits or the movies for which her songs have earned a dozen Oscar nominations. So why now, at 64, did she make “The Cave Sessions Vol. 1,” and release her first-ever album? In a weird way, John Legend is responsible. Duke Ellington: Berlin 1959

After my post last week on 16 jazz geniuses, I predictably received a flood of emails asking why Duke Ellington was missing from my list. As I explained, while Duke was exceptional, his piano didn't change the direction of jazz nor did a school emerge that emulated his approach. But the emails did give me pause. Perhaps Duke's influence was more subliminal, I thought. That's when it came to me. Ellington's genius was beauty and greater artistic self-worth. Prior to Ellington in the late 1920s, ...
