Dr. Dre Let Me Ride for Throwback Thursday

Once again, we’ve arrived at Thursday which makes it closer to the weekend. My music selections for the week include a couple of personal compilations, Yukmouth and a Street Wars mixtape. Beanie Sigel’s The Truth were among the albums to go along with DJ 1Mic’s Death Row compilation. My featured Throwback Thursday joint is courtesy of Death Row Records. Death Row is by far my favorite rap label ever as they put out plenty of hits. Recently, Dr. Dre had the honor of having his Chronic album plac...

To Pimp a Butterfly Kendrick Lamar Dropped 5 Years Ago

5 years ago today, Kendrick Lamar released his 3rd album, To Pimp a Butterfly. To Pimp a Butterfly was the follow-up to his classic, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. As many of you may know, Kendrick Lamar is my favorite new school rapper along with J. Cole. To Pimp a Butterfly went on to sell over a million copies and won a Grammy for Best Rap album. The album received its fair share of praise and criticism. It was ranked as the best album of 2015 by many publications, including Rolling Stone, Billboa...

Afu-Ra – “Urban Chemistry” (Album Review)

This is the 6th full-length album from New York veteran Afu-Ra. His 2000 debut Body of the Life Force is widely considered to be an underground classic & the 2002 follow-up Life Force Radio was pretty solid to me as well. Last time we heard from Afu was in late 2018 with Mazterchef & now, he’s back with Urban Chemistry. The album kicks off with “Unstop”, where Afu links up with Starrlight talking about how untouchable they are over a symphonic instrumental. The next song “Kiss the Pain” with My...

Apple Music put all your different album versions all in one place now

Extended albums, Deluxe Editions, demo tapes and other versions of the same album can all be found on the album page now. Apple Music have updated their album pages with a very welcome addition. No longer will you have to trawl through artist pages to find each version of an album as you can just select the album and scroll down. A new section underneath the track listing on an album page shows ‘Other Versions’ which lists all of the different versions of that album. That includes remas...

If you’ve got $7500, you can also have an E-mu SP-1200 sampler remake

Also new in 2020 – a remake of the legendary 1987 E-mu SP-1200. Just get ready for some sticker shock, because it’s not just a clone, it’s an actual SP-1200, rebuilt. This one is an extremely, extremely limited edition because it starts with an original working SP-1200. So the price tag is similar to a top-condition refurbished 1200 because that is literally what it is. The new SP-1200 undertaking comes from E-mu Systems co-founder Dave Rossum, so we can think of this as passion project more ...

Immerhin stellen gute TV-Lovestorys ...

Akai's MPC One is a backpack beatmaker

Akai's MPC One is a beat-making box that fits in a backpack (unlike the MPC X) and costs less than a grand (unlike the MPC Live), has a 7-inch touchscreen display, and offers a full bank of pads, knobs and dials for standalone action, and outputs and ports for hooking it up to other audio gear, synths and computers. Dani Deahl: For those unaware of the history of Akai’s MPC, the Japanese electronics company’s signature item first debuted over 30 years ago and changed music-making forever with...

Dr. Dre Chronic 2001 Released 20 Years Ago Today

The Chronic has been called one of the greatest hip hop albums of all-time. When the Chronic came out, it seemed like it changed hip hop and moved it in another direction. The production on the album was top-notched and made Death Row Records. The album ushered in a great of young stars like Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound and many others. 7 years later, Dr. Dre released the follow-up, Chronic 2001 and through his label this time. Did Chronic 2001 eclipse the original Chronic album? In my opinion, ...

2001 Turns 20

Beats, the Apple owned headphone makers and music shakers, are taking on one of their parent company’s most divisive products. Oops: April Fools’, at best, gave us stuff we actually want

Well, congratulations – you’ve survived another April Fools’ holiday. At worst, it can be unfunny and confusing. At best, though, it raises a different question – should we actually start dreaming up and making more ridiculous ideas? Okay, I don’t necessarily want to be the grinch of April Fools’. And maybe now is not the right time to raise this – like, someone might say that it could have something to do with the fact that I attempted a product launch on the holiday, uh, yesterday. (What? Dr. Dre Bragged About Daughter Getting Into USC “All On Her Own” As If $70 Million Donation Didn’t Help

At a very young age, most of us are taught that it’s not kind or wise to brag. Unfortunately, hip-hop is a genre where nearly 90% of the talent and material consists of nothing more than stunting on your peers, your enemies and hell, even your own family. But Dr. Dre is a whole-ass 54-year-old billionaire who, for the most part, keeps his mouth shut, head down and minds his business. So when Dre posted a mocking post on his Instagram account that highlighted the fact that his daughter, Truly Young...

Above the Rim Soundtrack Released 25 Years Ago Today

The Above the Rim Soundtrack is my favorite movie soundtrack of all-time. 25 years ago, today the Above the Rim Soundtrack was released. During this time, Death Row Records was in the midst of releasing classic after classic. Before this Death Row had dropped The Chronic by Dr. Dre and Doggystyle from Snoop. The Above the Rim Soundtrack got classic hip hop and R&B tracks on it. For hip hop, you had 2Pac, Warren G and Snoop Dogg & the Dogg Pound. On the R&B side of things, we had SWV, H-Town an...

Daddy’s Hangout Presents Mixtape Friday Volume 12

Once again, we have arrived at another Friday. We all know that means it’s time for Mixtape Friday. We kicked off the week with the Invasion mixtape from Green Lantern. Afterwards, we had a project someone put together of Eminem and 50 Cent. One of the best albums from last year was up next. Victory Lap by Nipsey Hussle is an incredibly dope project that you all should check out. My compilation from last week was next and if you didn’t listen to it check it out. Hard to Earn by Gang Starr Released 25 Years Ago

The group Gang Starr is one of my favorite groups or duo, however you want to look at it. Guru and DJ Premier have put out classic tracks together and that continued with their fourth album. Hard to Earn was released 25 years ago today. On one hand you had Guru, one of the illest and smoothest dudes to ever touch a mic. With DJ Premier, he’s definitely in the upper echelon of producers and considered one of the best to ever do it. Let’s just say this, you know a DJ Premier beat when you hear i...

Listen to My Top 5 Albums from 2Pac

2Pac is my favorite rapper, artist, musician or whatever you want to call it. Growing up my friends knew I was the smart one and was really into Black History at an early age. They discovered 2Pac before I did and told me to listen to his 2Pacalypse Now album. From then on, 2Pac was my favorite rapper and that haven’t changed 25+ years later. Since Music Monday have been nonexistent, we’re going to do things a little different. Every Monday I’ll do something with my favorite artists and their ...

New Video: J. Cole “Middle Child”

Fresh off his performance at the 2019 NBA All-Star Game, J. Cole gives his latest single, “Middle Child,” a visual makeover. The video was directed by Mez (who some of you might know as King Mez, the fellow North Carolina rapper who writes for Dr. Dre), while the song itself was co-produced by T-Minus. “[Cole] and his manager had an idea to pull a sample out, so we went online and we found this really cool loop. The moment we heard it, we all reacted to it,” T-Minus told Complex. “It all hap...
