Travis Barker & Run The Jewels – “Forever”

Run The Jewels just released their monstrous, long-awaited album RTJ4 last month, and that should be enough Killer Mike and El-P verses to sit around and process for a while. But today, we get a couple of new ones. Run The Jewels have teamed up with Travis Barker, the Blink-182 drummer and moonlighting … More »

The 10 Best Run The Jewels Songs

Run The Jewels always made it easy to root for them. Two artists with very different backgrounds and milieus, joining together in their late 30s and, instead of functioning like a one-off or a curiosity, unlocking a whole new chapter of their lives. Two artists pushing each other to new heights, two men who found … More »

Save Stereogum: An ‘00s Covers Comp

I started Stereogum in 2002 with a LiveJournal and a dream (to get free CDs). Seriously though, I started this site to discuss new music with strangers on the internet. Without all of you who comment thoughtfully on our features, send us hot tips, and aggressively point out our typos, this would be a really … More »

The 50 Best Albums Of 2020 So Far

You've seen the memes. It's only been five months and 2020 has already been a historical shitshow of a year. Thousands and thousands died while the rest of us slowly lost our minds in lockdown. And then, just as things finally seemed to be returning to some shattered semblance of normalcy, cities all … More »

RMR Has It

It was the giddiest kind of what the fuck: a black man in gold fronts, a ski mask, and a bulletproof vest, surrounded by peers wielding all manner of guns, passionately crooning about hating police and getting revenge on ex-lovers, to the sound of... Rascal Flatts? The artist's name was RMR, pronounced "rumor" -- fitting … More »

The 5 Best Songs Of The Week

Sometimes you need to be reminded just how powerful a song can be -- when it clarifies, or responds to, or rips open a moment as we're in it. Two of these songs were written a while ago, two of them are very new, and one is both new and old, which is unfortunately part … More »

Album Of The Week: Run The Jewels RTJ4

The first song on RTJ4 climaxes with a police standoff. "I got one round left, 100 cops outside," Killer Mike raps. "I could shoot at them or put one between my eyes." Over one of those controlled explosions El-P made his legend on, a beat that sounds like bombs going off underground and in the … More »

Run the Jewels – “Run the Jewels 4” (Album Review)

Run the Jewels are a super-duo consisting of Killer Mike & El-P. They first crossed paths with each other in 2012 when the latter produced Mike’s 5th album R.A.P. (Rebellious African People) Music in it’s entirety, but came together officially the following year with a self-titled debut. Their sophomore album in 2014 is my personal favorite though, as it’s a lot darker. Last we heard from Mike & El-Producto together in a full-length capacity was in 2016 with their much more political 3rd album ...

El-P – “Mama’s Hurt” & “That Is Al That’s Left”

El-P scored the end credits of Josh Trank's 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. And now he's scored the entirety of the director's new movie Capone, a biopic starring Tom Hardy as an aging Al Capone. "I grew up on film scores and they’ve always been a huge influence on me and I’ve been hoping … More »

El-P’s Debut Album Fantastic Damage Hits Streaming For The First Time Ever

In 2002, shortly after the breakup of his old group Company Flow, the New York rapper and producer El-P released Fantastic Damage, an album of broken and shattered and apocalyptic underground rap music. Run The Jewels were supposed to be in the middle of a giant tour right now, opening for a reunited Rage Against The Machine. That didn't happen, obviously -- it's now been pushed back to summer 2021 -- but El-P and Killer Mike clearly had plans for an elaborate rollout. They said that … More »
