Countdown to ecstasy: how music is being used in healing psychedelic trips

Jon Hopkins timed his upcoming album to the length of a ketamine high, while apps are using AI music to tailor drug experiences. Welcome to a techno-chemical new frontierTwo hundred psychedelic enthusiasts have converged in Austin, Texas for a “ceremonial concert” on the autumn equinox. People sprawl on yoga mats around a circular stage as staffers pace the candlelit warehouse, jingling bells and spritzing essential oils. While psychedelic drugs are prohibited, some attenders seem in an altered ...

Jon Hopkins – “Love Flows Over Us In Prismatic Waves” & “Deep In The Glowing Heart”

Jon Hopkins announced Music For Psychedelic Therapy, a beat-less album that lies somewhere between classical music, ambient, and drone, last month. We’ve already heard the meditative eight-minute track “Sit Around The Fire,” a collaboration with producer and ceremony guide East Forest featuring a recording of the late guru Ram Dass. Today, Hopkins is sharing “Music For Psychedelic Therapy (Excerpt),” which draws from the album’s tracks “Love Flows Over Us In Prismatic Waves” and “Deep In The Glo...

Jon Hopkins – “Sit Around The Fire” (Feat. Ram Dass & East Forest)

Jon Hopkins has announced a new album called Music For Psychedelic Treatment, his first full-length since 2018’s Singularity. The album was inspired in part by Tayos Caves in Ecuador, where Hopkins visited in 2018 and which are represented on the LP by three tracks featuring field recordings by Mendel Kaelen.

Jon Hopkins – “Scene Suspended”

Jon Hopkins' last album, Singularity, came out back in 2018. At that point, it had been five years since Hopkins' preceding release, and Singularity was met with the kind of excitement that usually surrounds Hopkins. (We ranked it as one of the best albums of that year.) Since then, we've heard from Hopkins … More »

The 60 Best Songs of 2018

60. St. Vincent - "Fast Slow Disco" Just because an album is available to purchase doesn't mean the songs are complete. While most acts will add different nuances to their hits in a live setting, Annie Clark is still very much obsessed with the tracks that made up her stellar 2017 effort Masseduction. She took her string-drenched highlight from that record "Slow Disco" and, while touring, turned it into an amped-up dance number, discovering that underneath all the opulence, it was a fist-...

The 10 Best Electronic Albums Of 2018

Over the summer, I found myself at Hammerstein Ballroom surrounded by more than 2,000 ecstatic Vocaloid fans, each equipped with a color-changing wand (something between a lightsaber and those conical lights that ground control uses to direct runway traffic at airports). Without much warning, the crowd would sync up their movements in spontaneous choreography along … More »

The 25 Best Electronic Albums of 2018

25. Great Dane - Gamma Ray (ADBC) Dane Morris is truly great, and he has proven so time and again over the course of his career. Gamma Ray was the bass worshipping Los Angeles beatsmith's fourth full-length, and continued the naming scheme started on his 2013 debut Alpha Dog and its 2014 follow up Beta Cat. He went positively aquatic with this one, squirting out a bevy of murky downtempo beats that'll have you floating eerily across the dance floor. Given the aggressively humorous note the ...

Jon Hopkins – “Feel First Life” Video

The UK producer Jon Hopkins makes lush, considered mutations of dance music, and he released the impressive album Singularity earlier this year. Hopkins' music is good for a lot of things, and one of those things is music videos. I don't know how directly Hopkins is involved in those things, but his music tends to … More »

The 50 Best Albums Of 2018 So Far

Have you ever talked to your parents about what it was like to live through the late '60s? National leaders were gunned down right and left. Entire generations were asserting themselves loudly. War was erupting, and nobody seemed quite certain why. People were walking on the moon. Hippie cults were chopping people up. A few … More »

English producer Jon Hopkins has released another animated music video in anticipation for his new album Singularity, and this time it’s a lot more abstract. In keeping with the similar trippy vibe of last month’s "Emerald Rush" video, his new song "Everything Connected" is a nearly six-minute electronic soundscape that takes you through the … More »

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

Music videos constitute an art form, but they're also basically advertising. They were created so that we'd want to buy music. That's their point. It's why they exist. The Best Ambient/Instrumental Music of 2017

It's pretty astounding how casual and raucous the ambient/instrumental crowd is these days. Amazingly, this is not a joke. In a time of truly fiery political rhetoric, people have been diving ears-first into the expansive realms of ambient/instrumental music in droves, putting on drawn-out and deliberate mood pieces to chill out to or do work to or meditate to, and while the eternal question of whether using ambient music for those purposes belies the artistry that went into it, m...
