Rated R Turns 20

"Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol!" Josh Homme incessantly repeated this recipe -- topped off with a dusting of "C-c-c-c-c-cocaine!" -- to kick off Queens Of The Stone Age's second album. The music behind Homme's refrain was as dunderheadeded as it comes: a rock band mostly banging on one note ad nauseam, briefly interrupted … More »

Run the Jewels – “Run the Jewels 4” (Album Review)

Run the Jewels are a super-duo consisting of Killer Mike & El-P. They first crossed paths with each other in 2012 when the latter produced Mike’s 5th album R.A.P. (Rebellious African People) Music in it’s entirety, but came together officially the following year with a self-titled debut. Their sophomore album in 2014 is my personal favorite though, as it’s a lot darker. Last we heard from Mike & El-Producto together in a full-length capacity was in 2016 with their much more political 3rd album ...

Desert Sessions: Easier Said Than Done

“Easier Said Than Done” from Desert Sessions (Josh Homme’s ongoing collective series) has Homme guiding listeners through the avant-garde song and video. Highlighted by solemn vocals, grand piano, an electric Wurlitzer, drum rolls and “little tiny baby claps,” the tune is from Arrivederci Despair—which was released late last year. Sometimes humorous (with  Homme peeing on a man dressed in a Nazi uniform) and sometimes disturbing …
