"That Thing You Do."

I'm sorry to say this happened: "Adam Schlesinger, Songwriter for Rock, Film and the Stage, Dies at 52/He made suburban characters shine in Fountains of Wayne songs and brought pop-rock perfection to the Tom Hanks film 'That Thing You Do!'" (NYT).In Fountains of Wayne, which was started in 1995, Mr. Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood perfected a novelistic form of hummable pop-rock in a style derived from the Kinks and from 1970s groups like Big Star and the Cars. They chose northern New Jersey a...

The Monitor Turns 10

It still sounds preposterous: a ragged New Jersey band, with a name taken from Shakespeare and a debut album citing one of the most famous Seinfeld episodes, returning with a sophomore effort that featured epic, multi-part songs loosely aligning Civil War imagery with personal anguish and generational ennui, which then turned out to be one … More »

Run, Duke and Frankie

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Joseph Simmons, better known as Run of RUN DMC, the early crossover rap trio of the 1980s (go here). [See image gallery at] Pete Yorn’s Thursday night show at the El Rey Theatre was somber and heartfelt with a touch of hope and joy.
